Parasites or Cohabitants: Cruel Omnipresent Usurpers or Creative “Éminences Grises”?

This paper presents many types of interplays between parasites and the host, showing the history of parasites, the effects of parasites on the outcome of wars, invasions, migrations, and on the development of numerous regions of the globe, and the impact of parasitic diseases on the society and on the course of human evolution. It also emphasizes the pressing need to change the look at the parasitism phenomenon, proposing that the term “cohabitant” is more accurate than parasite, because every living being, from bacteria to mammals, is a consortium of living beings in the pangenome. Even the term parasitology should be replaced by cohabitology because there is no parasite alone and host alone: both together compose a new adaptive system: the parasitized-host or the cohabitant-cohabited being. It also suggests switching the old paradigm based on attrition and destruction, to a new one founded on adaptation and living together

Rigid-Frame Porous Material Acoustic Attenuation on Compressor Discharge

Standards have limited the allowable noise levels in different situations, requiring the study of solutions at the source, in the path or the receiver. Muffler is the major factor influencing the noise of rotary compressor. Control and analyze the acoustic characteristics of muffler is essential. Porous materials have been studied and widely applied to reduce aircraft and vehicular noise or industrial problems in general. Generally, designers use absorbing materials available on the market, however they are not always adequate to the problem when there is the presence of another gas, for example in hermetic compressors. Thus it is proposed to model the propagation in rigid porous material, characterize and develop the porous metal optimizing your acoustical absorption performance, when applied in a cavity. Direct techniques for measuring the material properties such as resistivity, porosity, tortuosity and characteristic thermal and viscous length will be studied

Não obstante, é comumente custoso para o time de desenvol- vimento implementar tais ferramentas de forma fácil de usar e o mais portável possível. O objetivo principal desta tese é criar ferramentas que podem ser facilmente integradas com a maior variedade de softwa- res possível, mantendo o menor número possível de dependências, para minimizar o esforço que os usuários precisam fazer para ter acesso à funcionalidades de criptografia e certificação digital. N-E-ARTE: contexto e diálogos entre licenciados e educadores de arte

Anais do 35º Seminário de Extensão Universitária da Região Sul - Área temática: EducaçãoO presente trabalho trata de relatar as atividades realizadas até o momento no projeto de extensão Núcleo de Estudos e Reflexão Crítica sobre a formação do professor de arte (N.E-Arte), que tem por objetivo contribuir e promover uma formação complementar aos estudantes do curso de Artes Visuais-Licenciatura, da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG), assim como a professores já inseridos na rede escolar da cidade do Rio Grande, RS. As atividades propostas pelo grupo constituinte do N.E-Arte ocorre por meio de discussões de temas que foram identificados pelos proponentes e participantes como potenciais e desafiadores para a prática educativa em Artes. Germinal center architecture disturbance during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection in CBA mice

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Immune responses to malaria blood stage infection are in general defective, with the need for long-term exposure to the parasite to achieve immunity, and with the development of immunopathology states such as cerebral malaria in many cases. One of the potential reasons for the difficulty in developing protective immunity is the poor development of memory responses. In this paper, the potential association of cellular reactivity in lymphoid organs (spleen, lymph nodes and Peyer's patches) with immunity and pathology was evaluated during <it>Plasmodium berghei </it>ANKA infection in CBA mice.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>CBA mice were infected with 1 × 10⁶<it>P. berghei </it>ANKA-parasitized erythrocytes and killed on days 3, 6–8 and 10 of infection. The spleen, lymph nodes and Peyer's patches were collected, fixed in Carson's formalin, cut in 5 μm sections, mounted in glass slides, stained with Lennert's Giemsa and haematoxylin-eosin and analysed with bright-field microscopy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Early (day 3) strong activation of T cells in secondary lymphoid organs was observed and, on days 6–8 of infection, there was overwhelming activation of B cells, with loss of conventional germinal center architecture, intense centroblast activation, proliferation and apoptosis but little differentiation to centrocytes. In the spleen, the marginal zone disappeared and the limits between the disorganized germinal center and the red pulp were blurred. Intense plasmacytogenesis was observed in the T cell zone.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The observed alterations, especially the germinal center architecture disturbance (GCAD) with poor centrocyte differentiation, suggest that B cell responses during <it>P. berghei </it>ANKA infection in mice are defective, with potential impact on B cell memory responses.</p

Esquistossomíase hematóbica: seguimento histopatológico determinado por cistoscopia em um paciente com falha terapêutica ao praziquantel

A Esquistossomíase Hematóbica ou Esquistossomíase Urinária é um dos principais problemas de Saúde Pública na África e no Oriente Médio. Uma única dose de praziquantel 40 mg/kg de peso, continua sendo o tratamento de escolha para esta infecção. Os objetivos deste seguimento foram: avaliar o período pós-tratamento de um paciente infectado com Schistosoma haematobium e não submetido à re-exposição e, identificar as complicações da doença e/ou falha terapêutica, após o tratamento com praziquantel, por análise histopatológica de material obtido por biópsia vesical. O tratamento foi repetido sob supervisão médica para assegurar o uso correto do medicamento. Na presença de lesões suspeitas a cistoscopia, o paciente foi submetido a biópsia vesical. As características histopatológicas observadas nos materiais obtidos por biópsia, após cada tratamento, indicaram viabilidade de ovos e atividade dos granulomas.Schistosomiasis haematobia or urinary schistosomiasis is one of the main public health problems in Africa and the Middle East. A single dose of 40 mg praziquantel per kg body weight continues to be the treatment of choice for this infection. The aims of this follow-up were to study the post-treatment course of a patient infected with S. haematobium and not submitted to re-exposure, and to identify complications of the disease and/or therapeutic failure after praziquantel treatment by histopathological analysis. Treatments were repeated under medical supervision to ensure the correct use of the drug. In view of the suspicion of lesions in cystoscopy, the patient was submitted to bladder biopsy. The histopathological characteristics observed in biopsies obtained, after each treatment, indicated viability of parasite eggs and activity of granulomas
