    Properties of Heavy B Hadrons

    We review recent measurements of heavy B hadron states including masses and lifetimes of the Bc meson as well as excited B states (B**, Bs**). We discuss properties of the Bs meson such as lifetime, lifetime difference delta_Gamma/Gamma and CP violation in Bs -> J/Psi Phi decays. We also summarize new measurements of the masses and lifetimes of bottom baryons including the Lambda_b baryon, the Sigma_b baryon states as well as the Xi_b and Omega_b baryons.Comment: Plenary talk at ICHEP08, Philadelphia, USA, July 2008. 15 pages with 10 figures and 1 table.     Time Series Analysis in Flight Flutter Testing at the Air Force Flight Test Center: Concepts and Results

    The Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) flight flutter facility is described. Concepts of using a minicomputer-based time series analyzer and a modal analysis software package for flight flutter testing are examined. The results of several evaluations of the software package are given. The reasons for employing a minimum phase concept in analyzing response only signals are discussed. The use of a Laplace algorithm is shown to be effective for the modal analysis of time histories in flutter testing. Sample results from models and flight tests are provided. The limitations inherent in time series analysis methods are discussed, and the need for effective noise reduction techniques is noted. The use of digital time series analysis techniques in flutter testing is shown to be fast, accurate, and cost effective

    Bias of Maximum-Likelihood estimates in logistic and Cox regression models: A comparative simulation study

    Parameter estimates of logistic and Cox regression models are biased for finite samples. In a simulation study we investigated for both models the behaviour of the bias in relation to sample size and further parameters. In the case of a dichotomous explanatory variable x the magnitude of the bias is strongly influenced by the baseline risk defined by the constants of the models and the risk resulting for the high risk group. To conduct a direct comparison of the bias of the two models analyses were based on the same simulated data. Overall, the bias of the two models appear to be similar, however, the Cox model has less bias in situations where the baseline risk is high

    Stochastic Methods for Zero Energy Quantum Scattering

    We investigate the use of stochastic methods for zero energy quantum scattering based on a path integral approach. With the application to the scattering of a projectile from a nuclear many body target in mind, we use the potential scattering of a particle as a test for the accuracy and efficiency of several methods. To be able to deal with complex potentials, we introduce a path sampling action and a modified scattering observable. The approaches considered are the random walk, where the points of a path are sequentially generated, and the Langevin algorithm, which updates an entire path. Several improvements are investigated.     Percolation and depinning transitions in cut-and-paste models of adaptation

    We show that a cut-and-paste model to mimic a trial-and-error process of adaptation displays two pairs of percolation and depinning transitions, one for persistence and the other for efficiency. The percolation transition signals the onset of a property and the depinning transition, the growth of the same property. Despite its simplicity, the cut-and-paste model is qualitatively the same as the Minority Game. A majority cut-and-paste model is also introduced, to mimic the spread of a trend. When both models are iterated, the majority model reaches a frozen state while the minority model converges towards an alternate state. We show that a transition from the frozen to the alternate state occurs in the limit of a non-adaptive system

    Probing the environment of emerin by Enhanced ascorbate peroxidase 2 (APEX2)-mediated proximity labeling.

    Emerin is one of the best characterized proteins of the inner nuclear membrane, but can also occur at the level of the endoplasmic reticulum. We now use enhanced ascorbate peroxidase 2 (APEX2) to probe the environment of emerin. APEX2 can be used as a genetic tag that produces short-lived yet highly reactive biotin species, allowing the modification of proteins that interact with or are in very close proximity to the tagged protein. Biotinylated proteins can be isolated using immobilized streptavidin and analyzed by mass spectrometry. As an alternative to the standard approach with a genetic fusion of APEX2 to emerin, we also used RAPIDS (rapamycin- and APEX-dependent identification of proteins by SILAC), a method with improved specificity, where the peroxidase interacts with the protein of interest (i.e., emerin) only upon addition of rapamycin to the cells. We compare these different approaches, which, together, identify well-known interaction partners of emerin like lamin A and the lamina associated polypeptide 1 (LAP1), as well as novel proximity partners

    Color screening in a constituent quark model of hadronic matter

    The effect of color screening on the formation of a heavy quark-antiquark (QQˉQ\bar{Q}) bound state--such as the J/ψJ/\psi meson--is studied using a constituent-quark model. The response of the nuclear medium to the addition of two color charges is simulated directly in terms of its quark constituents via a string-flip potential that allows for quark confinement within hadrons yet enables the hadrons to separate without generating unphysical long-range forces. Medium modifications to the properties of the heavy meson, such as its energy and its mean-square radius, are extracted by solving Schr\"odinger's equation for the QQˉQ\bar{Q} pair in the presence of a (screened) density-dependent potential. The density dependence of the heavy-quark potential is in qualitative agreement with earlier studies of its temperature dependence extracted from lattice calculations at finite temperature. In the present model it is confirmed that abrupt changes in the properties of the J/ψJ/\psi-meson in the hadronic medium ({\it plasma}), correlate strongly with the deconfining phase transition.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRC for publication, uses revtex

    GDP Data Revisions and Forward-Looking Monetary Policy in Switzerland

    This paper analyzes forward-looking rules for Swiss monetary policy in a small structural VAR model consisting of four variables taking into account data revisions for GDP. First, the paper develops an analytical method to analyze the effect of data revision errors in GDP on the ex ante or conditional inflation-output-growth volatility trade-off and applies it to Swiss data. Second, the effects of different targets in a forward-looking monetary policy on ex post or unconditional volatility of inflation and output growth is explored by a simulation exercise. In general, the results obtained suggest that focusing monetary policy on GDP growth instead on inflation may lead to an inefficient policy with both increased medium term inflation and GDP growth volatility in the presence of GDP data revisions.Structural VAR, forward-looking monetary policy, efficiency frontier, GDP data revisions
