    The Skylab 4 Visual Observations Project was undertaken to determine the ways in which man can contribute to future earth-orbital observational programs. The premission training consisted of 17 hours of lectures by scientists representing 16 disciplines and provided the crewmen information on observational and photographic procedures and the scientific significance of this information. During the Skylab 4 mission, more than 850 observations and 2000 photographs with the 70-millimeter Hasselblad and 35-millimeter Nikon cameras were obtained for many investigative areas. Preliminary results of the project indicate that man can obtain new and unique information to support satellite earth-survey programs because of his inherent capability to make selective observations, to integrate the information, and to record the data by describing and photographing the observational sites

    The structures and thermoelectric properties of the infinitely adaptive series (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n

    The structures and thermoelectric properties of the (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n homologous series, derived from stacking hexagonal Bi2 and Bi2Te3 blocks, are reported. The end-members of this series are metallic Bi and semiconducting Bi2Te3; nine members of the series have been studied. The structures form an infinitely adaptive series and a unified structural description based on a modulated structure approach is presented. The as-synthesized samples have thermopowers (S) that vary from n-type for Bi2Te3 to p-type for phases rich in Bi2 blocks but with some Bi2Te3 blocks present, to n-type again for Bi metal. The thermoelectric power factor (S2/rho) is highest for Bi metal (43 muW/K2 cm at 130 K), followed by Bi2Te3 (20 muW/K2 cm at 270 K), while Bi2Te (m:n = 5:2) and Bi7Te3 (m:n = 15:6) have 9 muW/K2 cm (at 240 K) and 11 muW/K2 (at 270 K), respectively.     The ability to track electrode degradation, both spatially and temporally, is fundamental to understand performance loss during operation of lithium batteries. X-ray computed tomography can be used to follow structural and morphological changes in electrodes; however, the direct detection of electrochemical processes related to metallic lithium is difficult due to the low sensitivity to the element. In this work, 4-dimensional neutron computed tomography, which shows high contrast for lithium, is used to directly quantify the lithium diffusion process in spirally wound Li/SOCl2_{2} primary cells. The neutron dataset enables the quantification of the lithium transport from the anode and the accumulation inside the SOCl2_{2} cathode to be locally resolved. Complementarity between the collected neutron and X-ray computed tomographies is shown and by applying both methods in concert we have observed lithium diffusion blocking by the LiCl protection layer and identified all cell components which are difficult to distinguish using one of the methods alone
