Strain monitoring of tapestries: results of a three-year research project
The outcomes of an interdisciplinary research project between conservators and engineers investigating the strain experienced by different areas of a tapestry are described. Two techniques were used: full-field monitoring using digital image correlation (DIC) and point measurements using optical fibre sensors. Results showed that it is possible to quantify the global strain across a discrete area of a tapestry using DIC; optical fibre and other sensors were used to validate the DIC. Strain maps created by the DIC depict areas of high and low strain and can be overlaid on images of the tapestry, creating a useful visual tool for conservators, custodians and the general public. DIC identifies areas of high strain not obvious to the naked eye. The equipment can be used in situ in a historic house. In addition the work demonstrated the close relationship between relative humidity and strain
Surface-directed spinodal decomposition in the pseudobinary alloy (HfO_2)_x(SiO_2)_{1-x}
Hf silicate films (HfO_2)_{0.25}(SiO_2)_{0.75} with thicknesses in the range
4-20 nm were grown on silicon substrate by atomic layer deposition at 350
deg.C.The Hf distributions in as-grown and 800 deg.C annealed films were
investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),
angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) and medium energy ion
scattering (MEIS). HRTEM images show a layered structure in films thinner than
8 nm. The ARXPS data also reveal a non-uniform distribution of Hf throughout
the film depth. Diffusion of SiO_2 to the film surface after a longer time
anneal was observed by MEIS. All these observations provide evidence for
surface-directed spinodal decomposition in the pseudobinary
(HfO_2)_x(SiO_2)_{1-x} alloy system.Comment: 1o figures, one tabl
Applications of polymer optical fibre grating sensors to condition monitoring of textiles
Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) in polymer optical fibres (POFs) have been used to measure the strain in a woven textile.
FBGs in both POFs and silica optical fibres were attached to a woven textile specimen, and their performance
characterised. It was demonstrated that the POF FBGs provide improved strain transfer coefficients and reduce local
structural reinforcement compared to silica FBGs and therefore make a more suitable proposition for textile monitoring
Liquid State Anomalies for the Stell-Hemmer Core-Softened Potential
We study the Stell-Hemmer potential using both analytic (exact and
approximate ) solutions and numerical simulations. We observe in the
liquid phase an anomalous decrease in specific volume and isothermal
compressibility upon heating, and an anomalous increase in the diffusion
coefficient with pressure. We relate the anomalies to the existence of two
different local structures in the liquid phase. Our results are consistent with
the possibility of a low temperature/high pressure liquid-liquid phase

Driven Morse Oscillator: Model for Multi-photon Dissociation of Nitrogen Oxide
Within a one-dimensional semi-classical model with a Morse potential the
possibility of infrared multi-photon dissociation of vibrationally excited
nitrogen oxide was studied. The dissociation thresholds of typical driving
forces and couplings were found to be similar, which indicates that the results
were robust to variations of the potential and of the definition of
dissociation rate.

Charged particle composition in the inner heliosphere during the rise to maximum of Solar Cycle 23
Flux distributions and abundances relative to oxygen of interplanetary ions (Z>1)(Z>1) are statistically studied and compared for measurements made at 1 and at âŒ5 AU on the ACE and the Ulysses spacecraft near the ecliptic plane. Over the nearly two year interval studied, the distributions of the relative abundances and the fluxes of particles at the two locations are found to be approximately log normal. The statistical distributions of the relative abundances are found to be similar at the two helioradii. On a statistical basis, the fluxes at Ulysses times the distance of the measurements appear to be proportional to the fluxes at ACE. Using atomic interference to probe atom-surface interaction
We show that atomic interference in the reflection from two suitably
polarized evanescent waves is sensitive to retardation effects in the
atom-surface interaction for specific experimental parameters. We study the
limit of short and long atomic de Broglie wavelength. The former case is
analyzed in the semiclassical approximation (Landau-Zener model). The latter
represents a quantum regime and is analyzed by solving numerically the
associated coupled Schroedinger equations. We consider a specific experimental
scheme and show the results for rubidium (short wavelength) and the much
lighter meta-stable helium atom (long wavelength). The merits of each case are

Theory and simulation of short-range models of globular protein solutions
We report theoretical and simulation studies of phase coexistence in model
globular protein solutions, based on short-range, central, pair potential
representations of the interaction among macro-particles. After reviewing our
previous investigations of hard-core Yukawa and generalised Lennard-Jones
potentials, we report more recent results obtained within a DLVO-like
description of lysozyme solutions in water and added salt. We show that a
one-parameter fit of this model based on Static Light Scattering and
Self-Interaction Chromatography data in the dilute protein regime, yields
demixing and crystallization curves in good agreement with experimental
protein-rich/protein-poor and solubility envelopes. The dependence of cloud and
solubility points temperature of the model on the ionic strength is also
investigated. Our findings highlight the minimal assumptions on the properties
of the microscopic interaction sufficient for a satisfactory reproduction of

Mutuality of Rogers's therapeutic conditions and treatment progress in the first three psychotherapy sessions
Abstract
Objective: Research on the effects of Rogersâs therapeutic relationship conditions has typically focused on the unilateral provision of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence from therapist to client. Method: This study looked at both client and therapist mutuality of the Rogerian therapeutic conditions and the association between mutuality and treatment progress in the first three psychotherapy sessions. Clients (N = 62; mean age = 24.32; 77% female, 23% male) and therapists (N = 12; mean age = 34.32; nine female and three male) rated one another using the Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory after the first and third session. Results: Both clients and therapists perceived the quality of the
relationship as improved over time. Client rating of psychological distress (CORE-OM) was lower after session 3 than at session 1 (es = .85, [95% CIs: .67, 1.03]). Hierarchical multiple regression was used to test the predictive power of mutually high levels of the therapeutic conditions on treatment progress. The association between client rating of therapist-provided
conditions and treatment progress at session 3 was higher when both clients and therapists rated each other as providing high levels of the therapeutic conditions (R2 change = .073, p < .03). Conclusions: The findings suggest mutuality of Rogersâs therapeutic conditions is related to treatment progress.
