Relation between Kitaev magnetism and structure in -RuCl
Raman scattering has been employed to investigate lattice and magnetic
excitations of the honeycomb Kitaev material -RuCl and its
Heisenberg counterpart CrCl. Our phonon Raman spectra give evidence for a
first-order structural transition from a monoclinic to a rhombohedral structure
for both compounds. Significantly, only -RuCl features a large
thermal hysteresis, consistent with the formation of a wide phase of
coexistence. In the related temperature interval of K, we observe a
hysteretic behavior of magnetic excitations as well. The stronger magnetic
response in the rhombohedral compared to the monoclinic phase evidences a
coupling between the crystallographic structure and low-energy magnetic
response. Our results demonstrate that the Kitaev magnetism concomitant with
fractionalized excitations is susceptible to small variations of bonding
geometry.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, To appear in PR
Tuning the spin dynamics of kagome systems
Despite the conceptional importance of realizing spin liquids in solid states
only few compounds are known. On the other side the effect of lattice
distortions and anisotropies on the magnetic exchange topology and the
fluctuation spectrum are an interesting problem. We compare the excitation
spectra of the two s=1/2 kagome lattice compounds volborthite and vesignieite
using Raman scattering. We demonstrate that even small modifications of the
crystal structure may have a huge effect on the phonon spectrum and low
temperature properties.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure
A Non-Sequential Representation of Sequential Data for Churn Prediction
We investigate the length of event sequence giving best predictions
when using a continuous HMM approach to churn prediction from sequential
data. Motivated by observations that predictions based on only the few most recent
events seem to be the most accurate, a non-sequential dataset is constructed
from customer event histories by averaging features of the last few events. A simple
K-nearest neighbor algorithm on this dataset is found to give significantly
improved performance. It is quite intuitive to think that most people will react
only to events in the fairly recent past. Events related to telecommunications occurring
months or years ago are unlikely to have a large impact on a customer’s
future behaviour, and these results bear this out. Methods that deal with sequential
data also tend to be much more complex than those dealing with simple nontemporal
data, giving an added benefit to expressing the recent information in a
non-sequential manner
Giant phonon anomalies in the pseudo-gap phase of TiOCl
We report infrared and Raman spectroscopy results of the spin-1/2 quantum
magnet TiOCl. Giant anomalies are found in the temperature dependence of the
phonon spectrum, which hint to unusual coupling of the electronic degrees of
freedom to the lattice. These anomalies develop over a broad temperature
interval, suggesting the presence of an extended fluctuation regime. This
defines a pseudo-gap phase, characterized by a local spin-gap. Below 100 K a
dimensionality cross-over leads to a dimerized ground state with a global
spin-gap of about 2~430 K.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, for further information see

Longitudinal magnon in the tetrahedral spin system Cu2Te2O5Br2 near quantum criticality
We present a comprehensive study of the coupled tetrahedra-compound
Cu2Te2O5Br2 by theory and experiments in external magnetic fields. We report
the observation of a longitudinal magnon in Raman scattering in the ordered
state close to quantum criticality. We show that the excited
tetrahedral-singlet sets the energy scale for the magnetic ordering temperature
T_N. This energy is determined experimentally. The ordering temperature T_N has
an inverse-log dependence on the coupling parameters near quantum criticality
Low temperature mixed spin state of Co3+ in LaCoO3 evidenced from Jahn-Teller lattice distortions
One- and multi-phonon excitations of the single crystalline LaCoO3 were
studied using Raman spectroscopy in the temperature region of 5 K - 300 K.
First-order Raman spectra show a larger number of phonon modes than allowed for
the rhombohedral structure. Additional phonon modes are interpreted in terms of
activated modes due to lattice distortions, arising from the Jahn-Teller (JT)
activity of the intermediate-spin (IS) state of Co3+ ions. In particular, the
608-cm-1 stretching-type mode shows anomalous behavior in peak energy and
scattering intensity as a function of temperature. The anomalous temperature
dependence of the second-order phonon excitations spectra is in accordance with
the Franck-Condon mechanism that is characteristic for a JT orbital order.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, to be published in J. Low. Temp. Physic
