High resolution tsunami modelling for the evaluation of potential risk areas in Setúbal (Portugal)

    Get PDF
The use of high resolution hydrodynamic modelling to simulate the potential effects of tsunami events can provide relevant information about the most probable inundation areas. Moreover, the consideration of complementary data such as the type of buildings, location of priority equipment, type of roads, enables mapping of the most vulnerable zones, computing of the expected damage on man-made structures, constrain of the definition of rescue areas and escape routes, adaptation of emergency plans and proper evaluation of the vulnerability associated with different areas and/or equipment.

Such an approach was used to evaluate the specific risks associated with a potential occurrence of a tsunami event in the region of Setúbal (Portugal), which was one of the areas most seriously affected by the 1755 tsunami.

In order to perform an evaluation of the hazard associated with the occurrence of a similar event, high resolution wave propagation simulations were performed considering different potential earthquake sources with different magnitudes. Based on these simulations, detailed inundation maps associated with the different events were produced. These results were combined with the available information on the vulnerability of the local infrastructures (building types, roads and streets characteristics, priority buildings) in order to impose restrictions in the production of high-scale potential damage maps, escape routes and emergency routes maps

Multi-agent system for on-demand production integrating production and quality control

    Get PDF
Multi-agent systems is being pointed as particularly suited to design and engineer a new class of control systems to operate at the factory plants addressing the current requirements of modularity, flexibility and re-configurability. This paper introduces the main principles of a multi-agent system approach to support the integration of production and quality control processes in washing machines production lines that is being developed under the EU FP7 GRACE project

Acute myocardial infarction in the puerperium. A case report

    Get PDF
Acute myocardial infarction is a rare event in the puerperium that can have life-threatening consequences if not diagnosed early. Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is the most frequent causative mechanism in the period immediately after labor. This article reports the case of a 38-year-old woman with acute myocardial infarction due to spontaneous coronary artery dissection on the 7th day after delivery. The authors review this entity and also discuss the prognosis and future management of this patient

Behavioural validation of the ADACOR2 Self-organized holonic multi-agent manufacturing system

Global economy is driving manufacturing companies into a paradigm revolution. Highly customizable products at lower prices and with higher quality are among the most imposed influence factors. To respond properly to these external and internal constraints, such as work absence and machine failures, companies must be in a constant adaptation phase. Several manufacturing control architectures have been proposed throughout the years displaying more or less success to adapt into different manufacturing situations. These architectures follow different design paradigms but recently the decentralization and distribution of the processing power into a set of cooperating and collaborative entities is becoming the trend. Despite of the effort spent, there is still the need to empower those architectures with evolutionary capabilities and self-organization mechanisms to enable the constant adaption to disturbances. This paper presents a behavioural mechanism embed in the ADACOR2 holons. A validation procedure for this mechanism is also presented and results extracted. This validation is achieved through the use of a benchmark and results are compared with classical hierarchical and heterarchical architectures as also with the ADACOR.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Disfagia e Disartria. Forma Invulgar de Apresentação da Miastenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disorder that generally presents with ocular symptoms, specially diplopia and ptosis. Dysphagia may be a manifestation of the generalised type of the disease, but rarely is its presenting feature. The authors describe a case of Myasthenia Gravis in an old patient complaining of dysphagia and dysarthria. Because Myasthenia Gravis is a potentially serious but treatable disease, we emphasize the need to consider it in the differential diagnosis of dysphagia, namely in the elderly. In fact, the disorder is probably underdiagnosed in this population group, because clinicians tend to accept other more frequent diagnosis to explain these symptoms

Growth and Characterization of SnSe2 by selenization of sputtered metallic precursors

In the present work, we present a process to grow tin diselenide thin films by selenization at a maximum temperature of 470 ºC, of tin metallic precursor layers deposited by dc magnetron sputtering. For this maximum temperature, disklike grain morphologies were observed. Prominent XRD reflections at 2θ= 30.75º, 40.10º and 47.72º and vibration modes located at 119 cm-1 and 185 cm-1 were observed. These results allowed concluding that the dominant phase is SnSe2. The composition analysis, done by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), showed that the films were close to being stoichiometric SnSe2 with a Se to Sn ratio of 1.95. Photoluminescence characterization was performed and revealed a dominant band at 0.874 eV and two other bands at ~0.74 and 1.08 eV with a lower relative intensities. The observed radiative transitions depend critically on the temperature.N/

Influence of Grain Size Dispersion on the Magnetic Properties of Nanogranular BaTiO3-CoFe2O4 Thin Films

Thin film nanogranular composites of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) dispersed in a barium titanate (BaTiO3) matrix were deposited by laser ablation with different cobalt ferrite concentrations (x). Their structural and magnetic properties were characterized. The films were polycrystalline and composed by a mixture of tetragonal-BaTiO3 and CoFe2O4 with the cubic spinel structure. A slight (111) barium titanate phase orientation and (311) CoFe2O4 phase orientation were observed. The lattice parameter of the CoFe2O4 was always smaller than the bulk value indicating that the cobalt ferrite was under compressive stress. From atomic force microscopy a broad distribution of grain sizes was observed in the nanocomposites, with a significant amount of smaller grains (<40nm) from the CoFe2O4 phase. The magnetic measurements show an increase of the magnetic moment from the low concentration region where the magnetic grains are more isolated and their magnetic interaction is small, towards the bulk value for higher CoFe2O4 content in the films. A corresponding decrease of coercive field with increasing cobalt ferrite concentration was also observed, due to the higher inter-particle magnetic interaction (and reduced stress) of the agglomerated grains. This work has been financially supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and FEDER, through the project POCI/CTM/60181/2004
