    Nutritional Condition and Physiological Stress Levels of Elk in the Black Hills, South Dakota

    Percent of body fat and physiological stress are important correlates to wildlife demographics. We studied winter percent of body fat and physiological stress levels for a declining elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) population in South Dakota, 2011–2013. We obtained percent of winter body fat, pregnancy status, lactation status, and physiological stress data from 58 adult females (2+ years old). We compared physiological stress level data from 2011 with data collected from this same herd when elk densities were much higher (1995–1997). Our objectives were to determine percent of body fat during winter, examine if winter body fat was correlated with pregnancy and lactation status, and quantify and compare physiological stress hormone values from elk in the mid-1990s. Probability of being pregnant increased with higher winter nutritional condition, or percent of body fat; whereas females with a higher probability of previously lactating were lower in winter body fat. Mean fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM) levels in 2011 (mean = 47.78 ng/g, SE = 2.37) were higher during summer compared to data collected in 1995–1997 (mean = 34.21 ng/g, SE = 3.71); however, mean FGM levels during winter did not differ between the two time periods. Although summer levels of FGM have significantly increased since the mid-1990s, we caution against any interpretation of increased FGM levels on elk fitness, as it may not infer biological significance. Mean winter percent of body fat of elk was lower when compared to other populations in the west but this difference does not appear to be limiting vital rates and population growth for this elk herd. We recommend future research focus on summer/autumn data collection to provide a more comprehensive understanding of percent of body fat for elk in our region

    Characteristics of successful puma kill sites of elk in the Black Hills, South Dakota

    Elk Cervus canadensis nelsoni in the Black Hills, South Dakota, have been declining since 2006 and there is concern by resource managers and hunters that puma Puma concolor predation may be contributing to declining herds. We evaluated characteristics at sites where puma successfully killed elk in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We evaluated characteristics at coarse (79-ha plots) and fine (0.2-ha plot) scales across the landscape. Our primary objective was to obtain a better understanding of vegetation and terrain characteristics that may have facilitated greater susceptibility of elk to predation by puma. We evaluated effects of road density, terrain heterogeneity, probability of elk use, and vegetation variables at 62 puma kill sites of elk and 186 random sites to identify key landscape attributes where elk were killed by puma. Elk were killed by puma in high use areas. Elk were also killed in areas that had greater amounts of edge and intermediate ruggedness at the coarse scale. Further, elk were killed in areas with greater small tree density and woody debris at the fine scale. High germination rates of ponderosa pine trees are unique to the Black Hills and provide dense patches of cover for puma. We hypothesize that cover from small trees and woody debris provided conditions where puma could stalk elk in areas with optimal security cover for elk. We suggest managers implement vegetation management practices that reduce small tree density and woody debris in areas with greater density of meadow—forest edge if they are interested in potentially diminishing hiding cover for puma in elk high use areas

    Characterizing Bighorn Sheep Foraging Sites Using the Modified Robel Pole in the Southern Black Hills, South Dakota

    Evaluating foraging behavior of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) and filling information gaps for their habitat requirements is important for population level management in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. Our objectives were to: (1) evaluate the overall summer foraging area post lambing use during July and August for standing herbage with the modified Robel pole (1.27 cm bands) with visual obstruction readings (VOR) related to clipped herbage at ground level; (2) calibrate the Robel pole visual obstruction (bands) with clipped vegetation; and (3) develop guidelines for monitoring the landscape of the bighorn sheep foraging areas. The study area is located in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa ) savanna with few shrubs and dominated with native grasses. Each transect had 10 visual obstruction (bands) stations spaced 10 meters apart with 4 visual obstruction readings at each station. At 4 stations, total vegetation was clipped at ground level within a 0.25-m2  circular hoop. Clipped standing herbage ranged from 418 kg/ha to 3731 kg/ha with a mean of 1519 kg/ha. VOR measurements ranged from 0.2 cm to 14.9 cm with a 3.9 cm mean. Calibration of the modified Roble pole (visual obstruction of bands) with transect means using linear regression reliability predicted average clipped standing herbage (dry weights) within the bighorn sheep foraging area. The relationship was significant (R2  = 0.65; F1, 27  = 50.75, P  < 0.01). Cluster analysis (ISODATA) applied to the pole readings (VOR) and herbage resulted in 3 categories: short, intermediate and tall. We recommend 14 Robel pole transects (100 m in length) for VOR measurements within key foraging areas for future monitoring of herbaceous biomass for bighorn sheep. Foraging sites were in areas with little overstory tree canopy, close to rocky escape terrain, and where abundant grasses and forbs had little woody debris. The modified Robel pole provides a simple, reliable and cost effective alternative to clipping vegetation and obtaining dry weights

    Advancing a Conceptual Model of Evidence-Based Practice Implementation in Public Service Sectors

    Implementation science is a quickly growing discipline. Lessons learned from business and medical settings are being applied but it is unclear how well they translate to settings with different historical origins and customs (e.g., public mental health, social service, alcohol/drug sectors). The purpose of this paper is to propose a multi-level, four phase model of the implementation process (i.e., Exploration, Adoption/Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment), derived from extant literature, and apply it to public sector services. We highlight features of the model likely to be particularly important in each phase, while considering the outer and inner contexts (i.e., levels) of public sector service systems

    Resource Selection by Black-backed Woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) and American Three-toed Woodpeckers (P. dorsalis) in South Dakota and Wyoming

    Black-backed woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus, [BBWO]) and American three-toed woodpeckers (P. dorsalis, [ATTW]) are uncommon inhabitants of conifer forests and are sympatric in some areas, including the Black Hills. Both species exhibit genetic characteristics associated with isolated populations, are species of special management concern, and for which data are lacking concerning populations and habitats. We developed resource selection models of forest vegetation within 500 m radius plots (78.5 ha) for BBWOs and ATTWs to provide forest managers with stand-level information to estimate how forest management might affect habitat for these species in the Black Hills. Relative probability of selection by BBWOs increased with greater area of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) stands 41–70% overstory canopy cover up to approximately 20% (16 ha) of the surrounding area then declined when these stands comprised greater than 20% of the area. Relative probability of selection by ATTWs increased with greater area of white spruce (Picea glauca) up to a maximum of approximately 66% (50 ha) of the surrounding area and subsequently declined when white spruce comprised greater than 66% of the surrounding area. Increased area of aspen (Populus temuloides) stands increased the relative probability of selection by ATTWs. During a period when the Black Hills lacked extensive disturbance from fire or insect infestation, BBWPs selected areas that were managed for moderate overstory canopy of ponderosa pine and ATTWs selected stands with large diameter spruce and aspen at the higher elevations that were not extensively harvested

    We sampled 1,225 bobcats harvested in South Dakota, USA, (2014–2019) and used 17 microsatellite loci to assess genetic diversity and infer population genetic structure. We assigned individuals to genetic clusters (K) using spatial and nonspatial Bayesian clustering algorithms, and quantified differentiation among clusters.     What Are the Components of CBT for Psychosis? A Delphi Study

    There is strong evidence supporting the implementation of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for people with psychosis. However, there are a variety of approaches to the delivery and conceptual underpinnings within different research groups, and the degree of consensus or disagreement regarding what are the intrinsic components has not been explored. This study uses the Delphi method to try to establish what a group of experts in CBT for psychosis view as important. Experts were invited to participate in 3 rounds of producing and rating statements that addressed areas such as principles, assessment, models, formulation, change strategies, homework, and therapists’ assumptions in order to consolidate consensus of opinion. Seventy-seven items were endorsed as important or essential for CBT for psychosis by >80% of the panel. These recommendations should ensure greater fidelity in clinical practice, allow greater evaluation of adherence within clinical trials, facilitate the development of competency frameworks, and be of value in relation to training and dissemination of CBT for psychosis
