An investigation of the changes of species richness and distribution of the unionidae (Bivalvia: Molusca) within the Pamunkey Watershed
A survey of the Unionidae within the Pamunkey Watershed was conducted to investigate changes in distribution and species richness compared to a previous survey (Riddick, 1973) conducted over 30 years ago. Species richness decreased from 10 species in the previous survey to four species in the present survey. Notable increases of species richness were found in the upper South Anna and the lower North Anna regions, while sizable decreases were found in the lower South Anna and the upper and middle regions of the Pamunkey River. Regression analyses and t-tests comparing mussel survey data with habitat parameters were conducted to investigate the habitat characteristics most linked to unionid populations. The results indicated that greater composition of larger substrates and lower levels of silt deposition were significantly correlated to mussel presence. Crop land was the only quantified land use to correlate significantly (negatively) with changes in species richness and regional abundance parameters
DichroMatch: a website for similarity searching of circular dichroism spectra
Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a widely used method for examining the structure, folding and conformational changes of proteins. A new online CD analysis server (DichroMatch) has been developed for identifying proteins with similar spectral characteristics by detecting possible structurally and functionally related proteins and homologues. DichroMatch includes six different methods for determining the spectral nearest neighbours to a query protein spectrum and provides metrics of how similar these spectra are and, if corresponding crystal structures are available for the closest matched proteins, information on their secondary structures and fold classifications. By default, DichroMatch uses all the entries in the Protein Circular Dichroism Data Bank (PCDDB) for its comparison set, providing the broadest range of publicly available protein spectra to match with the unknown protein. Alternatively, users can download or create their own specialized data sets, thereby enabling comparisons between the structures of related proteins such as wild-type versus mutants or homologues or a series of spectra of the same protein under different conditions. Shear Capacity of Reinforced Concrete T-Beams Retrofit with Externally Bonded CFRP Fabric: A New Perspective
Unanchored U-wrapped externally bonded carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabrics are widely used to increase the design shear strength of existing reinforced concrete slab-on-beam structures, but current design models do not accurately predict the degree of enhancement. Experimental investigations further indicate that some T-beams retrofit with externally bonded CFRP fabric fail at lower shear loads than nominally identical nonretrofit reference counterparts, suggesting a negative experimental CFRP contribution. This work finds a new application for the upper-bound theorem of plasticity in analyzing the problem of U-wrapped externally bonded CFRP-retrofit beam behavior. The study provides insight into the poor historical prediction of the CFRP contribution, and demonstrates the limitations of a widely used experimental approach to determining this contribution. The analysis suggests a new way of thinking about the behavior of slab-on-beam structures retrofit with unanchored U-wrapped externally bonded CFRP. The upper-bound plastic analysis provides better predictions of retrofit shear capacity than some widely used design models, indicating that this approach can lead to better design of retrofit interventions in future. Professional guideline versus product label selection for treatment with IV thrombolysis: an analysis from SITS registry
Introduction:
Thrombolysis usage in ischaemic stroke varies across sites. Divergent advice from professional guidelines and product labels may contribute.
Patients and methods:
We analysed SITS-International registry patients enrolled January 2010 through June 2016. We grouped sites into organisational tertiles by number of patients arriving ≤2.5 h and treated ≤3 h, percentage arriving ≤2.5 h and treated ≤3 h, and numbers treated ≤3 h. We assigned scores of 1–3 (lower/middle/upper) per variable and 2 for onsite thrombectomy. We classified sites as lower efficiency (summed scores 3–5), medium efficiency (6–8) or higher efficiency (9–11). Sites were also grouped by adherence with European product label and ESO guideline: ‘label adherent’ (>95% on-label), ‘guideline adherent’ (≥5% off-label, ≥95% on-guideline) or ‘guideline non-adherent’ (>5% off-guideline). We cross-tabulated site-efficiency and adherence. We estimated the potential benefit of universally selecting by ESO guidance, using onset-to-treatment time-specific numbers needed to treat for day 90 mRS 0–1.
Results:
A total of 56,689 patients at 597 sites were included: 163 sites were higher efficiency, 204 medium efficiency and 230 lower efficiency. Fifty-six sites were ‘label adherent’, 204 ‘guideline adherent’ and 337 ‘guideline non-adherent’. There were strong associations between site-efficiency and adherence (P < 0.001). Almost all ‘label adherent’ sites (55, 98%) were lower efficiency. If all patients were treated by ESO guidelines, an additional 17,031 would receive alteplase, which translates into 1922 more patients with favourable three-month outcomes.
Discussion:
Adherence with product labels is highest in lower efficiency sites. Closer alignment with professional guidelines would increase patients treated and favourable outcomes.
Conclusion:
Product labels should be revised to allow treatment of patients ≤4.5 h from onset and aged ≥80 years

We report an extensive study on the zero field ground state of a powder
sample of the pyrochlore . A sharp heat capacity anomaly
that labels a low temperature phase transition in this material is observed at
280 mK. Neutron diffraction shows that a \emph{quasi-collinear} ferromagnetic
order develops below with a magnetic moment of
. High resolution inelastic neutron scattering
measurements show, below the phase transition temperature, sharp gapped
low-lying magnetic excitations coexisting with a remnant quasielastic
contribution likely associated with persistent spin fluctuations. Moreover, a
broad inelastic continuum of excitations at meV is observed from the
lowest measured temperature up to at least 2.5 K. At 10 K, the continuum has
vanished and a broad quasielastic conventional paramagnetic scattering takes
place at the observed energy range. Finally, we show that the exchange
parameters obtained within the framework of linear spin-wave theory do not

ValiDichro: a website for validating and quality control of protein circular dichroism spectra
Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is widely used in structural biology as a technique for examining the structure, folding and conformational changes of proteins. A new server, ValiDichro, has been developed for checking the quality and validity of CD spectral data and metadata, both as an aid to data collection and processing and as a validation procedure for spectra to be included in publications. ValiDichro currently includes 25 tests for data completeness, consistency and quality. For each test that is done, not only is a validation report produced, but the user is also provided with suggestions for correcting or improving the data. Heights and infinite algebraic extensions of the rationals
textThis dissertation contains a number of results on properties of infinite algebraic extensions of the rational field, all of which have a view toward the study of heights in diophantine geometry. We investigate whether subextensions of extensions generated by roots of polynomials of a given degree are themselves generated by polynomials of small degree, a problem motivated by the study of heights. We discuss a relative version of the Bogomolov property (the absence of small points) for extensions of fields of algebraic numbers. We describe the relationship between the Bogomolov property and the structure of the multiplicative group.
