    Growth of Single Unit-Cell Superconducting La2−x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_{4} Films

    We have developed an approach to grow high quality ultrathin films of La2−x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_{4} with molecular beam epitaxy, by adding a homoepitaxial buffer layer in order to minimize the degradation of the film structure at the interface. The advantage of this method is to enable a further reduction of the minimal thickness of a superconducting La1.9_{1.9}Sr0.1_{0.1}CuO4_{4} film. The main result of our work is that a single unit cell (only two copper oxide planes) grown on a SrLaAlO4_4 substrate exhibits a superconducting transition at 12.5 K (zero resistance) and an in-plane magnetic penetration depth λab(0)\lambda_{ab}(0) = 535 nm.Comment: to be published in "Solid State Electonics" special issue, conference proceedings of the 9th Workshop on Oxide Electronics, St-Pete Beach, FL, 20-23 november 2002 : 12 pages 4 figures in preprint versio

    Spin-Correlation Coefficients and Phase-Shift Analysis for p+3^3He Elastic Scattering

    Angular Distributions for the target spin-dependent observables A0y_{0y}, Axx_{xx}, and Ayy_{yy} have been measured using polarized proton beams at several energies between 2 and 6 MeV and a spin-exchange optical pumping polarized 3^3He target. These measurements have been included in a global phase-shift analysis following that of George and Knutson, who reported two best-fit phase-shift solutions to the previous global p+3^3He elastic scattering database below 12 MeV. These new measurements, along with measurements of cross-section and beam-analyzing power made over a similar energy range by Fisher \textit{et al.}, allowed a single, unique solution to be obtained. The new measurements and phase-shifts are compared with theoretical calculations using realistic nucleon-nucleon potential models.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    The Three-Dipole Kicker Injection Scheme for the ALS-U Accumulator Ring

    The ALS-U light source will implement on-axis single-train swap-out injection employing an accumulator between the booster and storage rings. The accumulator ring design is a twelve period triple-bend achromat that will be installed along the inner circumference of the storage-ring tunnel. A non-conventional injection scheme will be utilized for top-off off-axis injection from the booster into the accumulator ring meant to accommodate a large ∼300\sim 300~nm emittance beam into a vacuum-chamber with a limiting horizontal aperture radius as small as 88 mm. The scheme incorporates three dipole kickers distributed over three sectors, with two kickers perturbing the stored beam and the third affecting both the stored and the injected beam trajectories. This paper describes this ``3DK'' injection scheme and how it fits the accumulator ring's particular requirements. We describe the design and optimization process, and how we evaluated its fitness as a solution for booster-to-accumulator ring injection.Comment: 13 pages, 20 figure

    Use of electronic patient records and encrypted email patient communication among Swiss chiropractors: a population-based cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND The implementation of electronic health information technologies is a key target for healthcare quality improvement. Among Swiss chiropractors, reliable data on the use of electronic heath information technologies and distribution of the health workforce was lacking. OBJECTIVES To estimate the prevalence of electronic patient record (EPR) and encrypted email communication use among Swiss chiropractors and describe the geographic distribution of chiropractors in Switzerland. METHODS Population-based cross-sectional study of all active practising members of the Swiss Chiropractic Association (ChiroSuisse) between 3 December 2019 and 31 January 2020. We asked about clinician and practice characteristics, EPR use for clinical record keeping, use of encrypted email for patient communication, and information on EPR and encrypted email communication products used. Multivariable logistic regression analyses assessed the associations between clinician and practice characteristics and (1) EPR use, and (2) encrypted email use. RESULTS Among 286 eligible Swiss chiropractors (193 [68%] men; mean age, 51.4 [SD, 11.2] years), 217 (76%) completed the survey (140 [65%] men; mean age 50.7 [11.2] years). Among respondents, 47% (95% confidence interval [CI], 40-54%) reported using an EPR in their practice, while 60% (95% CI, 54-67%) endorsed using encrypted email technology. Chiropractors aged ≥ 60 (versus those ≤ 39) years were 74% less likely to use an EPR system (OR 0.26, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.77), while clinicians from practices with 4 or more chiropractors (versus those from solo practices) were over 5 times more likely to report EPR use (OR 5.6, 2.1 to 16.5). Findings for factors associated with encrypted email use were similar. The density of chiropractors in Switzerland was 3.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. CONCLUSIONS As of January 2020, 286 duly licensed chiropractors were available to provide musculoskeletal healthcare in Switzerland - just under 50% of responding Swiss chiropractors used an EPR system in clinical practice, while 60% used encrypted email technology. Better implementation of EPR and electronic health information technologies in Swiss chiropractic practice is possible and encouraged for the purpose of musculoskeletal healthcare quality improvement

    DOSE REQUIREMENTS AND PLASMA CONCENTRATIONS OF PIPECURONIUM DURING BILATERAL RENAL EXCLUSION AND ORTHOTOPIC LIVER TRANSPLANTATION IN PIGS

    We have studied five pigs undergoing bilateral clamping of the renal pedicles, seven pigs undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation and three control animals without surgery in order to examine the roles of the kidney and liver in the plasma clearance of pipecuronium. An i.v. infusion of pipecuronium was controlled to maintain a constant 90-95 % twitch depression throughout the investigation. The right sciatic nerve was stimulated continuously with supra-maximal stimuli at 0.1 Hz and the force of the corresponding evoked isometric muscle contraction was recorded continuously. Control pigs needed an infusion rate of pipecuronium 8-10.7 μg kg−1 min−1. In the renal group, it was necessary to reduce the infusion rate of pipecuronium by about 25% after clamping both renal vascular pedicles (P < 0.05 compared with controls); in pigs undergoing liver transplantation, it was necessary to reduce the rate by approximately 80% after clamping hepatic vessels (P < 0.05 compared with controls and from the period after clamping of renal vessels). After hepatic recirculation, the infusion rate of pipecuronium was increased progressively to a rate which corresponded to 50% of baseline values (P < 0.05 compared with the anhepatic phase and from controls). Plasma concentrations of pipecuronium were comparable in the three animal groups and did not change significantly during the study. These data suggest that the liver plays a more important role than the kidney in the plasma clearance of pipecuronium in pig

    Possible first order transition in the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model induced by thermally fluctuating vortex cores

    We study the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model of a neutral superfluid in the vicinity of the vortex unbinding transition. The model is mapped onto an effective interacting vortex gas by a systematic perturbative elimination of all fluctuating degrees of freedom (amplitude {\em and} phase of the order parameter field) except the vortex positions. In the Coulomb gas descriptions derived previously in the literature, thermal amplitude fluctuations were neglected altogether. We argue that, if one includes the latter, the vortices still form a two- dimensional Coulomb gas, but the vortex fugacity can be substantially raised. Under the assumption that Minnhagen's generic phase diagram of the two- dimensional Coulomb gas is correct, our results then point to a first order transition rather than a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, provided the Ginzburg-Landau correlation length is large enough in units of a microscopic cutoff length for fluctuations.     Longitudinal phase space manipulation in energy recovering linac-driven free-electron lasers

    Energy recovering an electron beam after it has participated in a free-electron laser (FEL) interaction can be quite challenging because of the substantial FEL-induced energy spread and the energy anti-damping that occurs during deceleration. In the Jefferson Lab infrared FEL driver-accelerator, such an energy recovery scheme was implemented by properly matching the longitudinal phase space throughout the recirculation transport by employing the so-called energy compression scheme. In the present paper,after presenting a single-particle dynamics approach of the method used to energy-recover the electron beam, we report on experimental validation of the method obtained by measurements of the so-called "compression efficiency" and "momentum compaction" lattice transfer maps at different locations in the recirculation transport line.     Collective pinning of a frozen vortex liquid in ultrathin superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_7 films

    The linear dynamic response of the two-dimensional (2D) vortex medium in ultrathin YBa_2Cu_3O_7 films was studied by measuring their ac sheet impedance Z over a broad range of frequencies \omega. With decreasing temperature the dissipative component of Z exhibits, at a temperature T*(\omega) well above the melting temperature of a 2D vortex crystal, a crossover from a thermally activated regime involving single vortices to a regime where the response has features consistent with a description in terms of a collectively pinned vortex manifold. This suggests the idea of a vortex liquid which, below T*(\omega), appears to be frozen at the time scales 1/\omega of the experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
