Magneto-optical response of layers of semiconductor quantum dots and nanorings

    Get PDF
In this paper a comparative theoretical study was made of the magneto-optical response of square lattices of nanoobjects (dots and rings). Expressions for both the polarizability of the individual objects as their mutual electromagnetic interactions (for a lattice in vacuum) was derived. The quantum-mechanical part of the derivation is based upon the commonly used envelope function approximation. The description is suited to investigate the optical response of these layers in a narrow region near the interband transitions onset, particularly when the contribution of individual level pairs can be separately observed. A remarkable distinction between clearly quantum-mechanical and classical electromagnetic behavior was found in the shape and volume dependence of the polarizability of the dots and rings. This optical response of a single plane of quantum dots and nanorings was explored as a function of frequency, magnetic field, and angle of incidence. Although the reflectance of these layer systems is not very strong, the ellipsometric angles are large. For these isolated dot-ring systems they are of the order of magnitude of degrees. For the ring systems a full oscillation of the optical Bohm-Ahronov effect could be isolated. Layers of dots do not display any remarkable magnetic field dependence. Both type of systems, dots and rings, exhibit an outspoken angular-dependent dichroism of quantum-mechanical origin

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance study of multiply charged aggregates of small singly charged peptides formed by electrospray ionization

AbstractAggregates of singly protonated peptides formed with a nanoelectrospray ion source have been observed in the gas phase using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR). Employment of “soft” ion sampling conditions in the source, which were developed previously to generate water clusters of biomolecules, provides significant yields of aggregates of singly protonated GGDPG ([2GGDPG + 2H]2+), GGEPG ([2GGEPG + 2H]2+), and VEPIPY (2VEPIPY + 2H]2+). With peptide mixtures, heteroaggregates, e.g., [GGDPG + GGEPG + 2H]2+ have also been observed along with the homoaggregates. These weakly bound noncovalent complexes undergo facile exothermic dissociation into the corresponding singly protonated monomer species with normal operation of the electrospray ion source. For example, the aggregates were not observed in FT-ICR experiments utilizing a conventional electrospray ionization (ESI) or fast atom bombardment source or with a quadrupolar ion trap mass spectrometer equipped with a conventional ESI source. The formation and metastability of these aggregates are dependent on highly specific intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the monomers. The amino acid sequence (DPG) of GGDPG mimics the well-known β reverse turn of proteins and semiempirical calculations show that it provides excellent hydrogen bonding sites for a protonated N-terminus amino group. Support for this conjecture is provided by the failure to observe aggregate formation of singly protonated peptides with several larger peptides, including hexaglycine and hexaalanine

    Phase transitions with four-spin interactions

Using an extended Lee-Yang theorem and GKS correlation inequalities, we prove, for a class of ferromagnetic multi-spin interactions, that they will have a phase transition(and spontaneous magnetization) if, and only if, the external field h=0h=0 (and the temperature is low enough). We also show the absence of phase transitions for some nonferromagnetic interactions. The FKG inequalities are shown to hold for a larger class of multi-spin interactions

Coupling in situ synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy and numerical simulation to quantify the influence of intermetallic formation on permeability in aluminium–silicon–copper alloys

AbstractThe influence of the β-Al5FeSi intermetallic phase on permeability evolution during solidification in an Al–Si–Cu alloy with a columnar dendritic microstructure has been numerically studied at solid fractions between 0.10 and 0.85. The fluid flow simulations were performed on a semisolid microstructure extracted directly from a single solidifying specimen, enabling the first study of permeability variation on an individual microstructure morphology that is evolving in solid fraction. The 3-D geometries were imaged at the TOMCAT beamline using 4-D (3-D+time) in situ synchrotron-based X-ray tomographic microscopy. The results illustrate the major effect of intermetallic particles on flow blockage and permeability. Intermetallics that grow normal to the flow direction were found to have a greater impact on the flow field in comparison to intermetallics in the parallel flow direction. An analytical expression, based on the anisotropic Blake–Kozeny model, was developed with a particle blockage term that takes into account the effects of intermetallic particles on permeability. In the regime of primary-phase solidification, a good fit between the analytical expression and the simulation results is found

    r-modes in Relativistic Superfluid Stars

We discuss the modal properties of the rr-modes of relativistic superfluid neutron stars, taking account of the entrainment effects between superfluids. In this paper, the neutron stars are assumed to be filled with neutron and proton superfluids and the strength of the entrainment effects between the superfluids are represented by a single parameter η\eta. We find that the basic properties of the rr-modes in a relativistic superfluid star are very similar to those found for a Newtonian superfluid star. The rr-modes of a relativistic superfluid star are split into two families, ordinary fluid-like rr-modes (ror^o-mode) and superfluid-like rr-modes (rsr^s-mode). The two superfluids counter-move for the rsr^s-modes, while they co-move for the ror^o-modes. For the ror^o-modes, the quantity κσ/Ω+m\kappa\equiv\sigma/\Omega+m is almost independent of the entrainment parameter η\eta, where mm and σ\sigma are the azimuthal wave number and the oscillation frequency observed by an inertial observer at spatial infinity, respectively. For the rsr^s-modes, on the other hand, κ\kappa almost linearly increases with increasing η\eta. It is also found that the radiation driven instability due to the rsr^s-modes is much weaker than that of the ror^o-modes because the matter current associated with the axial parity perturbations almost completely vanishes.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. New Higgs signals induced by mirror fermion mixing effects

We study the conditions under which flavor violation arises in scalar-fermion interactions, as a result of the mixing phenomena between the standard model and exotic fermions. Phenomenological consequences are discussed within the specific context of a left-right model where these additional fermions have mirror properties under the new SU(2)_R gauge group. Bounds on the parameters of the model are obtained from LFV processes; these results are then used to study the LFV Higgs decays (H --> tau l_j, l_j = e, mu), which reach branching ratios that could be detected at future colliders.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, ReVTex4, graphicx, to be published in Phys. Epitope recognition of peptide-imprinted polymers for Regenerating protein 1 (REG1)

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were developed to replace natural antibodies with a cost-effective and durable synthetic material. Molecular imprinting of proteins conventionally utilizes the whole protein as the template, which is complex (as many different epitopes may be imprinted) and expensive. In this work, seven peptides (13–18 amino acids) were synthesized and used as templates for the imprinting and recognition of Regenerating Protein 1 (REG1). REG1 is involved in the proliferation and differentiation of diverse cell types, and was recently described as a urinary biomarker for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Peptide-imprinted poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)s (PIPs), containing four different mole fractions of ethylene were cast on screen-printed electrodes to find the optimum composition for both the sensing and the extraction of REG1 in an E. coli culture medium. Peptides with fewer than 16 amino acids and two or three aromatic and hydrophobic groups have a higher affinity for MIPs of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVAL) with 27 mol% of ethylene, while those with four aromatic and hydrophobic groups have a higher affinity for MIPs with EVALs that contain 32 mol% of ethylene. The peptide / EVAL combination that maximized both imprinting effectiveness and response to REG1B was the sequence NEDRETWVDADLY imprinted into 32 mol% EVAL. This EVAL composition and template peptide were then modified by incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles, thus extending applications for PIPs to include extraction of REG1 protein from E. coli culture medium

Decoupling of Degenerate Positive-norm States in Witten's String Field Theory

We show that the degenerate positive-norm physical propagating fields of the open bosonic string can be gauged to the higher rank fields at the same mass level. As a result, their scattering amplitudes can be determined from those of the higher spin fields. This phenomenon arises from the existence of two types of zero-norm states with the same Young representations as those of the degenerate positive-norm states in the old covariant first quantized (OCFQ) spectrum. This is demonstrated by using the lowest order gauge transformation of Witten's string field theory (WSFT) up to the fourth massive level (spin-five), and is found to be consistent with conformal field theory calculation based on the first quantized generalized sigma-model approach. In particular, on-shell conditions of zero-norm states in OCFQ stringy gauge transformation are found to correspond, in a one-to-one manner, to the background ghost fields in off-shell gauge transformation of WSFT. The implication of decoupling of scalar modes on Sen's conjectures was also briefly discussed.Comment: 18 pages, use Latex with revtex
