The effect of varying target size on negative relative accommodation (NRA) and positive relative accommodation (PRA)
Clinical testing of negative relative accommodation (NRA) and positive relative accommodation (PRA) requires a nearpoint chart using small type. Most often, a 20/20 acuity demand is used and is considered to be the standard for these tests. Though it is understood that using different acuity demands affects the endpoints of these tests, differences have yet to be quantified for case analysis purposes. This study compares the endpoints of NRA and PRA with varying acuity demands and quantifies the differences. Fifty-six optometry students ranging in age from 22 to 38 years were tested using standard NRA and PRA test protocols on a specially constructed nearpoint card consisting of 20/20, 20/25, and 20/30 Snellen acuity lines of letters. Statistically significant differences were found in both blur-out and recovery values between each acuity demand on the NRA and PRA. Additionally, most mean values comparing monocular to binocular endpoints were statistically different. Results from this study demonstrate that different endpoints should be expected when using nonstandard targets or acuity demands for accommodative testing
Accurate <i>ab initio</i> ro-vibronic spectroscopy of the X<sup>2</sup>∏ CCN radical using explicitly correlated methods
Explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-F12b calculations have been carried out with systematic sequences of correlation consistent basis sets to determine accurate near-equilibrium potential energy surfaces for the X<sup>2</sup>∏ and a<sup>4</sup>Σ<sup>−</sup> electronic states of the CCN radical. After including contributions due to core correlation, scalar relativity, and higher order electron correlation effects, the latter utilizing large-scale multireference configuration interaction calculations, the resulting surfaces were employed in variational calculations of the ro-vibronic spectra. These calculations also included the use of accurate spin-orbit and dipole moment matrix elements. The resulting ro-vibronic transition energies, including the Renner-Teller sub-bands involving the bending mode, agree with the available experimental data to within 3 cm<sup>−1</sup> in all cases. Full sets of spectroscopic constants are reported using the usual second-order perturbation theory expressions. Integrated absorption intensities are given for a number of selected vibronic band origins. A computational procedure similar to that used in the determination of the potential energy functions was also utilized to predict the formation enthalpy of CCN, ΔH<sub>f</sub>(0K) = 161.7 ± 0.5 kcal/mol
Physiology of Sporeforming Bacteria Associated with Insects: Radiorespirometric Survey of Carbohydrate Metabolism In the 12 Serotypes of \u3ci\u3eBacillus thuringiensis\u3c/i\u3e
Radiorespirometry was used to compare the primary pathways of glucose catabolism in 18 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis representing the 12 established serotypes. Every strain utilizes the Embden-Meyerhof-Pamas pathway almost exclusively; pentose-phosphate pathway participation is minor. The Embden- Meyerhof-Parnas pathway predominates regardless of whether the cells were grown in a minimal medium or one containing yeast extract. The results indicate that the absolute requirement for citrate and related compounds is not a result of defective citrate or glucose transport and metabolism

In Vivo Structures of the Helicobacter pylori cag Type IV Secretion System
The type IV secretion system (T4SS) is a versatile nanomachine that translocates diverse effector molecules between microbes and into eukaryotic cells. Here, using electron cryotomography, we reveal the molecular architecture of the Helicobacter pylori cag T4SS. Although most components are unique to H. pylori, the cag T4SS exhibits remarkable architectural similarity to other T4SSs. Our images revealed that, when H. pylori encounters host cells, the bacterium elaborates membranous tubes perforated by lateral ports. Sub-tomogram averaging of the cag T4SS machinery revealed periplasmic densities associated with the outer membrane, a central stalk, and peripheral wing-like densities. Additionally, we resolved pilus-like rod structures extending from the cag T4SS into the inner membrane, as well as densities within the cytoplasmic apparatus corresponding to a short central barrel surrounded by four longer barrels. Collectively, these studies reveal the structure of a dynamic molecular machine that evolved to function in the human gastric niche
