    Fourth Generation Parity

    We present a very simple 4th-generation (4G) model with an Abelian gauge interaction under which only the 4G fermions have nonzero charge. The U(1) gauge symmetry can have a Z_2 residual discrete symmetry (4G-parity), which can stabilize the lightest 4G particle (L4P). When the 4G neutrino is the L4P, it would be a neutral and stable particle and the other 4G fermions would decay into the L4P leaving the trace of missing energy plus the standard model fermions. Because of the new symmetry, the 4G particle creation and decay modes are different from those of the sequential 4G model, and the 4G particles can be appreciably lighter than typical experimental bounds.Comment: Version accepted for publication in PR

    We formulate a U(1) gauge theory of the Hubbard model in the slave-rotor representation. From this formalism it is argued that spin liquid phases may exist near the Mott transition in the Hubbard model on triangular and honeycomb lattices at half filling. The organic compound k-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3 is a good candidate for the spin liquid state on a triangular lattice.     Progress and Challenges of Implementing Decentralized HIV Testing For Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV - Myanmar.

    BackgroundMyanmar has adopted point-of-care (POC) HIV testing for its prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV program, and was initiated in 84 townships in 2013. This study assessed the progress of HIV testing uptake from 2012, one year prior to POC testing, to 2015, and the challenges faced by service providers during the rapid rollout of this testing strategy.MethodsThis serial cross-sectional study included 23 townships randomly selected from the 84 townships. An open-question survey was used to collect information on the challenges faced by service providers. A random effects logistic model was used for assessing the progress of HIV testing uptake among urban and rural health center groups.ResultsHIV testing uptake for antenatal care (ANC) attendees increased from 60% to 90% for rural and from 70% to 90% for urban attendees. The proportion of ANC attendees who were tested at their first visit increased from 70% to 80% for rural and from 70% to 90% for urban attendees. In addition, the proportion receiving same-day test results increased from less than 10% to 90% for both groups. Major challenges faced during the initial rollout included low health awareness among pregnant women, fear of stigma and discrimination, long travel times and costs, and increased workloads of providers in rural settings.Conclusions and global health implicationsThe program should consider recruiting local volunteers to help reduce the workloads of service providers. Professional education based on need and continued mentoring and quality control schemes for HIV testing need to be in place. This decentralized strategy would be applicable to other resource-limited countries

    Flux Noise in MgB2 Thin Films

    We have performed flux noise and AC-susceptibility measurements on two 400 nm thick MgB2_2 films. Both measurement techniques give information about the vortex dynamics in the sample, and hence the superconducting transition, and can be linked to each other through the fluctuation-dissipation-theorem. The transition widths for the two films are 0.3 and 0.8 K, respectively, and the transitions show a multi step-like behavior in the AC-susceptibility measurements. The same phenomenon is observed in the flux noise measurements through a change in the frequency dependence of the spectral density at each step in the transition. The results are discussed and interpreted in terms of vortices carrying an arbitrary fraction of a flux quantum as well as in terms of different macroscopic regions in the films having slightly different compositions, and hence, different critical temperatures.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, conference contribution to "Fluctuations and Noise", Santa Fe, New mexico 1-4 june 200

    Charge Transfer Induced Molecular Hole Doping into Thin Film of Metal-Organic-Frameworks

    Despite the highly porous nature with significantly large surface area, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) can be hardly used in electronic, and optoelectronic devices due to their extremely poor electrical conductivity. Therefore, the study of MOF thin films that require electron transport or conductivity in combination with the everlasting porosity is highly desirable. In the present work, thin films of Co3(NDC)3DMF4 MOFs with improved electronic conductivity are synthesized using layer-by-layer and doctor blade coating techniques followed by iodine doping. The as-prepared and doped films are characterized using FE-SEM, EDX, UV/Visible spectroscopy, XPS, current-voltage measurement, photoluminescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and incident photon to current efficiency measurements. In addition, the electronic and semiconductor property of the MOF films are characterized using Hall Effect measurement, which reveals that in contrast to the insulator behavior of the as-prepared MOFs, the iodine doped MOFs behave as a p-type semiconductor. This is caused by charge transfer induced hole doping into the frameworks. The observed charge transfer induced hole doping phenomenon is also confirmed by calculating the densities of states of the as-prepared and iodine doped MOFs based on density functional theory. Photoluminescence spectroscopy demonstrate an efficient interfacial charge transfer between TiO2 and iodine doped MOFs, which can be applied to harvest solar radiations.Comment: Main paper (19 pages, 6 figures) and supplementary information (15 pages, 10 figures), accepted in ACS Appl.     Growth of superconducting MgB2 thin films via postannealing techniques

    We report the effect of annealing on the superconductivity of MgB2 thin films as functions of the postannealing temperature in the range from 700 C to 950 C and of the postannealing time in the range from 30 min to 120 min. On annealing at 900 C for 30 min, we obtained the best-quality MgB2 films with a transition temperature of 39 K and a critical current density of ~ 10^7 A/cm^2. Using the scanning electron microscopy, we also investigated the film growth mechanism. The samples annealed at higher temperatures showed the larger grain sizes, well-aligned crystal structures with preferential orientations along the c-axis, and smooth surface morphologies. However, a longer annealing time prevented the alignment of grains and reduced the superconductivity, indicating a strong interfacial reaction between the substrate and the MgB2 film.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures include

    Dynamic Release of Bending Stress in Short dsDNA by Formation of a Kink and Forks

    Bending with high curvature is one of the major mechanical properties of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) that is essential for its biological functions. The emergence of a kink arising from local melting in the middle of dsDNA has been suggested as a mechanism of releasing the energy cost of bending. Herein, we report that strong bending induces two types of short dsDNA deformations, induced by two types of local melting, namely, a kink in the middle and forks at the ends, which we demonstrate using D-shaped DNA nanostructures. The two types of deformed dsDNA structures dynamically interconvert on a millisecond timescale. The transition from a fork to a kink is dominated by entropic contribution (anti-Arrhenius behavior), while the transition from a kink to a fork is dominated by enthalpic contributions. The presence of mismatches in dsDNA accelerates kink formation, and the transition from a kink to a fork is removed when the mismatch size is three base pairs.1157Ysciescopu
