The Fish Stock Enhancement Programs (FSEPs)-based Fish Stock Rebuilding Plan (FSRP) have been established and operated from 2006 and is expanded to 16 species in 2016. While the current FSEPs-based FSRP is operated by species if the FSEPs-based FSRP be expanded to encompass the whole coastal ecosystem, it will greatly contribute to more effective FSEPs-based FSRP for all overfished species in coastal and offshore fisheries in Korea. This study is intended to introduce the processes and the contents of the Korea’s FSEPs-based FSRP and its fisheries resources management policies in more details. It is also to reveal any current issues in the socio-bioeconomics to achieve the effectiveness of the FSEPs-based FSRP. Objective recovery amounts of catch for each step were configured and a 10-year FSEPs-based FSRP was simply analyzed by catch data. The 10 year results of the FSEPs-based FSRP show that the amount of catch was increased in 8 species among 10 species

Since the establishment and enforcement of the swimming crab stock rebuilding plan in 2006, stock research and evaluation are continuously being conducted on the stock and diverse rebuilding measures are also being considered. The current swimming crab stock rebuilding plan emphasizes policies to reduce fishing pressure and create resources, but it is relatively indifferent about the management of habitats and spawning grounds, protection of marine environment and reduction of pollution. More active participation by fishers and better understanding between fishers groups are required for the effective enforcement of the rebuilding plan, including the TAC policy. Education and information campaigns directed at fishers should be reinforced to support the rebuilding plan as these plans must include broader participation by fishers.Summarizing the results of socioeconomic study on the swimming crab stock rebuilding plan, due to the improvements in the stock status, the swimming crab catch has also increased from 2,683 tonnes(M/T) in 2004 to 17 596 M/T in 2008. The increase is believed to be the result of a combination of rebuilding efforts e.g. clean-up of fishing grounds, release of juvenile crab, stricter enforcement of regulations, and favourable ocean environment, especially high sea surface temperature. As part of the efforts to enhance the environment of the fishing ground, sunken fishing gears, mostly drift nets, were removed by the government. In 2007 alone, 628 M/T of nets were taken out from Yeonpyeng Island area and the Specific Area. In addition, the release of juvenile crab was also undertaken as part of stock enhancement program; 909 000 juvenile crabs were released in 2006-2007.Another important aspect of implementing swimming crab rebuilding plan along with nationwide community-based fisheries management is the increased awareness of fishers regarding the issue, and an increased consensus towards rebuilding.  Accordingly, the effect of rebuilding plans for sandfish on other related fisheries must sufficiently be taken into consideration. In order to rebuild swimming crab fisheries, a rebuilding plan for the ecosystem must gradually be established and related multi-fisheries should be managed systematically.  Keywords: Swimming crab rebuilding plan, Socioeconomic study, Swimming crab stock recovers, Fishing mortality, Effects of stock rebuilding plan Dept. of Marine Business & Economics, Pukyong National University, Busan 608-737 Korea  Please Cite This Article As: Sang-Go Lee. 2010. Management Measures of Shrimp Trawling Fishery in Arafura Sea, Indonesia: a Challenge

Since there were many evidences on trawling impact to the environment and society, government has banned trawl operations in Indonesian waters except for those in the Arafura Sea. It is not solely acquitted trawl operation in the area without restrain, but it has been put together with the measures taken to exploit the shrimp resources in optimal manner. Those are input controls, output controls and technical measures. This paper examines two major challenges in applying these management measures: declining of shrimp stock and lack of legal enforcement. Come what may the fishing regulations impose in the shrimp trawling, without effective enforcement, the purpose of fisheries management unlikely will be achieved

Sarpogrelate is an antiplatelet agent widely used to treat arterial occlusive diseases. Evaluation of platelet aggregation is essential to monitor therapeutic effects of sarpogrelate. Currently, no molecular signatures are available to evaluate platelet aggregation. Here, we performed comprehensive proteome profiling of platelets collected from 18 subjects before and after sarpogrelate administration using LC-MS/MS analysis coupled with extensive fractionation. Of 5423 proteins detected, we identified 499 proteins affected by sarpogrelate and found that they strongly represented cellular processes related to platelet activation and aggregation, including cell activation, coagulation, and vesicle-mediated transports. Based on the network model of the proteins involved in these processes, we selected three proteins (cut-like homeobox 1; coagulation factor XIII, B polypeptide; and peptidylprolyl isomerase D) that reflect the platelet aggregation-related processes after confirming their alterations by sarpogrelate in independent samples using Western blotting. Our proteomic approach provided a protein profile predictive of therapeutic effects of sarpogrelate. © 2016 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.1

Aim: The Lemon fin barb hybrid was developed by crossing Lampam (Barbonymus gonionotus) females with Kerai (Hypsibarbus wetmorei) males as a potential food source for lower income people in Malaysia due to fast growth and ease of culture. For delicious flesh and high market demand, the farming of this hybrid has subsequently expanded rapidly. Many of the basic biological aspects of this hybrid have not yet been investigated and in this study the embryonic and early larval development were examined. Methodology: After injecting the brood-stocks with hormones, the matured eggs and sperms were collected by strip spawning. The developing embryonic stages were subsequently observed at 10 min intervals for the first hour, 20 min intervals at the second hour, 30 min for the next hour, and then hourly intervals up to hatching. After hatching, observations continued at 2 hr intervals for the first day and a minimum of 6 hr intervals for the following days. Results: In the consortium, there was more than 2-fold increase in the maximum algal specific growth rate and a 1.3-fold increase in the maximum bacterial specific growth rate. Furthermore, the maximum ethylene glycol removal efficiency by consortium was 89%, while those by bacteria monoculture was 31%. No apparent removal of ethylene glycol by the C. fusca monoculture was observed. Interpretation: This study represents the first description of the early development stages for Lemon fin barb hybrids that may assist with the establishment of seed production and rearing techniques for aquaculture development in Malaysia

Temporal variability of surface air pollutants in megacities of South Korea

This study investigated the various temporal (weekly, monthly, and inter-annual) variability of air pollutants (PM10, SO2, NO2, O-3, CO) in seven megacities in South Korea (Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, and Ulsan). We found that the general decreasing trend of PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO. An exceptional pollutant is O-3, showing a clear increasing trend consistently in all seven megacities. Seasonally PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO have the highest level in winter due to the large fossil-fuel combustion for the heating demand, but O-3 shows the maximum peak in summer related to the intensified photochemistry. Based on the analysis for percentile values of air pollutants, we recognized that some patterns of air pollutants in Korean megacities are overlooked: O-3 increase is not perfectly related to the NO2 pattern, somewhat high SO2 in the coastal cities, ambiguous weekly pattern on Monday (as a weekday) and Sunday (as a weekend). Through this comprehensive analysis of multiple air pollutants using the percentile values, the characteristic for various temporal change of air pollutants in Korean megacities can be better understood, and some useful ideas for the air quality control in the urban region can be also excavated

Synergistic use of hyperspectral uv-visible omi and broadband meteorological imager modis data for a merged aerosol product

The retrieval of optimal aerosol datasets by the synergistic use of hyperspectral ultraviolet (UV)-visible and broadband meteorological imager (MI) techniques was investigated. The Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) Level 1B (L1B) was used as a proxy for hyperspectral UV-visible instrument data to which the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) aerosol algorithm was applied. Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) L1B and dark target aerosol Level 2 (L2) data were used with a broadband MI to take advantage of the consistent time gap between the MODIS and the OMI. First, the use of cloud mask information from the MI infrared (IR) channel was tested for synergy. High-spatial-resolution and IR channels of the MI helped mask cirrus and sub-pixel cloud contamination of GEMS aerosol, as clearly seen in aerosol optical depth (AOD) validation with Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data. Second, dust aerosols were distinguished in the GEMS aerosol-type classification algorithm by calculating the total dust confidence index (TDCI) from MODIS L1B IR channels. Statistical analysis indicates that the Probability of Correct Detection (POCD) between the forward and inversion aerosol dust models (DS) was increased from 72% to 94% by use of the TDCI for GEMS aerosol-type classification, and updated aerosol types were then applied to the GEMS algorithm. Use of the TDCI for DS type classification in the GEMS retrieval procedure gave improved single-scattering albedo (SSA) values for absorbing fine pollution particles (BC) and DS aerosols. Aerosol layer height (ALH) retrieved from GEMS was compared with Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) data, which provides high-resolution vertical aerosol profile information. The CALIOP ALH was calculated from total attenuated backscatter data at 1064 nm, which is identical to the definition of GEMS ALH. Application of the TDCI value reduced the median bias of GEMS ALH data slightly. The GEMS ALH bias approximates zero, especially for GEMS AOD values of >similar to 0.4 and GEMS SSA values of <similar to 0.95. Finally, the AOD products from the GEMS algorithm and MI were used in aerosol merging with the maximum-likelihood estimation method, based on a weighting factor derived from the standard deviation of the original AOD products. With the advantage of the UV-visible channel in retrieving aerosol properties over bright surfaces, the combined AOD products demonstrated better spatial data availability than the original AOD products, with comparable accuracy. Furthermore, pixel-level error analysis of GEMS AOD data indicates improvement through MI synergy

Most malignant tumors originating from the biliary tract are adenocarcinomas, and adenosqamous carcinoma of Klatskin's tumor is a very rare finding. An 83-yr-old man was admitted to our hospital because of jaundice. The abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed wall thickening and luminal stenosis of both the intrahepatic duct confluent portion and the common hepatic duct. These findings were compatible with Klatskin's tumor, Bismuth type III. Considering the patient's old age, palliative combined modality therapy was performed. After percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage, biopsy was performed via percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy. The histopathologic findings showed adenosquamous carcinoma. External radiotherapy and intraluminal brachytherapy through the endobiliary Y-type stent were then done. Nine months after the radiotherapy, the laboratory findings and the abdominal computed tomography revealed biliary obstruction and progressive hepatic metastasis. The combined modality therapy of external radiotherapy, intraluminal brachytherapy and stenting assisted him to live a normal life until he finally experienced biliary obstruction

Suppression of osteopontin inhibits chemically induced hepatic carcinogenesis by induction of apoptosis in mice

    Get PDF
Previous clinical reports have found elevated osteopontin (OPN) levels in tumor tissues to be indicative of greater malignancy in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the role of OPN on carcinogenesis and its underlying mechanism remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the oncogenic role of OPN in diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced hepatic carcinogenesis in mice. The overall incidence of hepatic tumors at 36 weeks was significantly lower in OPN knockout (KO) mice than in wild-type (WT) mice. Apoptosis was significantly enhanced in OPN KO mice, and was accompanied by the downregulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). In the in vitro study, OPN suppression also led to lower mRNA and protein levels of EGFR associated with the downregulation of c-Jun in Hep3B and Huh7 human HCC cells lines, which resulted in increased apoptotic cell death in both cell lines. Moreover, a positive correlation was clearly identified between the expression of OPN and EGFR in human HCC tissues. These data demonstrate that the OPN deficiency reduced the incidence of chemically induced HCC by suppressing EGFR-mediated antiapoptotic signaling. An important implication of our findings is that OPN positively contributes to hepatic carcinogenesis.OAIID:RECH_ACHV_DSTSH_NO:T201614207RECH_ACHV_FG:RR00200001ADJUST_YN:EMP_ID:F001304CITE_RATE:5.008DEPT_NM:의학과EMAIL:[email protected]_YN:YCONFIRM:
