    Immune Response Modulation by Tumor-Secreted Glycosphingolipids

    Although originally considered merely structural components of cellular membranes, glycosphingolipids (GSL) arenow recognized as having critical effects on cellular physiology, including proliferation, differentiation, viraltransformation and ontogenesis. In addition, a vast majority of human cancers have modified GSL compositioncompared to parental normal cells. These modifications may contribute to both tumor survival and exert strikingeffects on anti-tumor immunity.     Evidence flow graph methods for validation and verification of expert systems

    The results of an investigation into the use of evidence flow graph techniques for performing validation and verification of expert systems are given. A translator to convert horn-clause rule bases into evidence flow graphs, a simulation program, and methods of analysis were developed. These tools were then applied to a simple rule base which contained errors. It was found that the method was capable of identifying a variety of problems, for example that the order of presentation of input data or small changes in critical parameters could affect the output from a set of rules

    We carry out the first numerical simulations to directly confirm the existence of a kink-antikink unbinding transition, T_w, along Ising-like domain walls in the two dimensional fully frustrated XY model.     Cosmic Rays in Clusters of Galaxies

    We argue that clusters of galaxies have an intergalactic medium, which is permeated by strong magnetic fields and also has a contribution of pressure from cosmic rays. These two components of total pressure are probably highly time dependent, and range probably between 1/10 of the gas pressure up to equipartition between gas pressure and the sum of the two other components. Radio galaxies are likely to provide the main source for both magnetic fields and cosmic rays. In this concept it becomes easy to understand the occasional mismatch between the total mass inferred from the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium derived purely from gas, and the total mass derived from lensing data. We also suggest that the structure and topology of the magnetic field may be highly inhomogeneous - at least over a certain range of scales, and may contain long twisted filaments of strong magnetic fields, as on the Sun. The analogy with the interstellar medium may be fruitful to explore further, where we do not know where magnetic fields come from, but suspect that the cosmic rays derive from supernova explosions. In such an analogy it becomes useful to refer to "radio galaxy explosions" in clusters of galaxies. A full scale exploration of all the implications, especially of the notion that occasionally complete equipartition may be reached, is a task for the future.Comment: 21 pages with 6 figures (reduced resolution).     A stochastic and dynamical view of pluripotency in mouse embryonic stem cells

    Pluripotent embryonic stem cells are of paramount importance for biomedical research thanks to their innate ability for self-renewal and differentiation into all major cell lines. The fateful decision to exit or remain in the pluripotent state is regulated by complex genetic regulatory network. Latest advances in transcriptomics have made it possible to infer basic topologies of pluripotency governing networks. The inferred network topologies, however, only encode boolean information while remaining silent about the roles of dynamics and molecular noise in gene expression. These features are widely considered essential for functional decision making. Herein we developed a framework for extending the boolean level networks into models accounting for individual genetic switches and promoter architecture which allows mechanistic interrogation of the roles of molecular noise, external signaling, and network topology. We demonstrate the pluripotent state of the network to be a broad attractor which is robust to variations of gene expression. Dynamics of exiting the pluripotent state, on the other hand, is significantly influenced by the molecular noise originating from genetic switching events which makes cells more responsive to extracellular signals. Lastly we show that steady state probability landscape can be significantly remodeled by global gene switching rates alone which can be taken as a proxy for how global epigenetic modifications exert control over stability of pluripotent states.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    Zika Virus: Can Artificial Contraception Be Condoned?

    As the Zika virus pandemic continues to bring worry and fear to health officials and medical scientists, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) have recommended that residents of the Zika-infected countries, e.g., Brazil, and those who have traveled to the area should delay having babies which may involve artificial contraceptive, particularly condom. This preventive policy, however, is seemingly at odds with the Roman Catholic Church’s position on the contraceptive. As least since the promulgation of Paul VI’s 1968 encyclical, Humanae Vitae, the Church has explicitly condemned artificial birth control as intrinsic evil. However, the current pontiff, Pope Francis, during his recent visit to Latin America, remarked that the use of artificial contraception may not be in contradiction to the teaching of Humanae Vitae while drawing a parallel between the current Zika Crisis and the 1960’s Belgian Congo Nun Controversy. The pope mentioned that the traditional ethical principle of the lesser of two evils may be the doctrine that justified the exceptions. The authors of this paper attempt to expand the theological rationale of the pope’s suggestion. In so doing, the authors rely on casuistical reasoning as an analytic tool that compares the Belgian Congo Nun case and the given Zika case, and suggest that the former is highly similar to, if not the same as, the latter in terms of normative moral feature. That is, in both cases the use of artificial contraception is theologically justified in reference to the criteria that the doctrine of the lesser of two evils requires. The authors wish that the paper would provide a solid theological-ethical ground based on which condom-use as the most immediate and effective preventive measure can be recommended in numerous Catholic hospitals as well as among Catholic communities in the world, particularly the most Zika-affected and largest Catholic community in the world, Brazil – 123 million present Brazilian citizens are reported to be Roman Catholic

    Thermodynamics of d-dimensional hard sphere fluids confined to micropores

    We derive an analytical expression of the second virial coefficient of d-dimensional hard sphere fluids confined to slit pores by applying Speedy and Reiss’ interpretation of cavity space. We confirm that this coefficient is identical to the one obtained from the Mayer cluster expansion up to second order with respect to fugacity. The key step of both approaches is to evaluate either the surface area or the volume of the d-dimensional exclusion sphere confined to a slit pore. We, further, present an analytical form of thermodynamic functions such as entropy and pressure tensor as a function of the size of the slit pore. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed for d = 2 and d = 3, and the results are compared with analytically obtained equations of state. They agree satisfactorily in the low density regime, and, for given density, the agreement of the results becomes excellent as the width of the slit pore gets smaller, because the higher order virial coefficients become unimportant

    Separating true range measurements from multi-path and scattering interference in commercial range cameras

    Time-of-flight range cameras acquire a three-dimensional image of a scene simultaneously for all pixels from a single viewing location. Attempts to use range cameras for metrology applications have been hampered by the multi-path problem, which causes range distortions when stray light interferes with the range measurement in a given pixel. Correcting multi-path distortions by post-processing the three-dimensional measurement data has been investigated, but enjoys limited success because the interference is highly scene dependent. An alternative approach based on separating the strongest and weaker sources of light returned to each pixel, prior to range decoding, is more successful, but has only been demonstrated on custom built range cameras, and has not been suitable for general metrology applications. In this paper we demonstrate an algorithm applied to both the Mesa Imaging SR-4000 and Canesta Inc. XZ-422 Demonstrator unmodified off-the-shelf range cameras. Additional raw images are acquired and processed using an optimization approach, rather than relying on the processing provided by the manufacturer, to determine the individual component returns in each pixel. Substantial improvements in accuracy are observed, especially in the darker regions of the scene
