Understanding University Support for Suicide Bereavement and Bereaved Experiences: A Phenomenological Study
In recent years, a multitude of literature have discussed the turbulent nature for young adults to navigate the difficulties of suicide bereavement with lack of support. This experience can be further cumbersome when the bereavement is co-occurring within an academic profession, such as attending university. This study explored three participants experience of suicide bereavement support at a university level, utilizing a phenomenological arts-based approach for inquiry. Data analysis revealed eight common themes that reflect the university students\u27 lived experiences of the phenomenon discussed: Acknowledgment of the communicated loss by faculty, provision of academic support, lack/absence of practice, reluctance, emotional response, non-faculty support, recall, omission. The findings within this study highlight the unique nature of arts expression and the use of it as a communicative tool to those experiencing a death loss. Results suggest a reluctance to disclose for fear of a further loss of professionalism within the University setting and the absence of a solidified grievance plan that left individuals feeling further unsupported. Furthermore, individuals spoke to a heightened need for meaning making of the experience to facilitate the bereavement process and a reliance on the self rather than community due to previous fears of disclosure. Our understanding of suicide bereavement would benefit from an inclusion of non-art affiliated participants, a wider sample size and individuals that associate outside of the female identification for a more diverse range of experiences
Health of Philippine Emigrants Study (HoPES): study design and rationale.
BackgroundImmigrants to the United States are usually healthier than their U.S.-born counterparts, yet the health of immigrants declines with duration of stay in the U.S. This pattern is often seen for numerous health problems such as obesity, and is usually attributed to acculturation (the adoption of "American" behaviors and norms). However, an alternative explanation is secular trends, given that rates of obesity have been rising globally. Few studies of immigrants are designed to distinguish the effects of acculturation versus secular trends, in part because most studies of immigrants are cross-sectional, lack baseline data prior to migration, and do not have a comparison group of non-migrants in the country of origin. This paper describes the Health of Philippine Emigrants Study (HoPES), a study designed to address many of these limitations.MethodsHoPES is a dual-cohort, longitudinal, transnational study. The first cohort consisted of Filipinos migrating to the United States (n = 832). The second cohort consisted of non-migrant Filipinos who planned to remain in the Philippines (n = 805). Baseline data were collected from both cohorts in 2017 in the Philippines, with follow-up data collection planned over 3 years in either the U.S. for the migrant cohort or the Philippines for the non-migrant cohort. At baseline, interviewers administered semi-structured questionnaires that assessed demographic characteristics, diet, physical activity, stress, and immigration experiences. Interviewers also measured weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, blood pressure, and collected dried blood spot samples.DiscussionMigrants enrolled in the study appear to be representative of recent Filipino migrants to the U.S. Additionally, migrant and non-migrant study participants are comparable on several characteristics that we attempted to balance at baseline, including age, gender, and education. HoPES is a unique study that approximates a natural experiment from which to study the effects of immigration on obesity and other health problems. A number of innovative methodological strategies were pursued to expand the boundaries of current immigrant health research. Key to accomplishing this research was investment in building collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the U.S. and the Philippines with shared interest in the health of migrants
Systems, interactions and macrotheory
A significant proportion of early HCI research was guided by one very clear vision: that the existing theory base in psychology and cognitive science could be developed to yield engineering tools for use in the interdisciplinary context of HCI design. While interface technologies and heuristic methods for behavioral evaluation have rapidly advanced in both capability and breadth of application, progress toward deeper theory has been modest, and some now believe it to be unnecessary. A case is presented for developing new forms of theory, based around generic “systems of interactors.” An overlapping, layered structure of macro- and microtheories could then serve an explanatory role, and could also bind together contributions from the different disciplines. Novel routes to formalizing and applying such theories provide a host of interesting and tractable problems for future basic research in HCI
Effect of randomness and anisotropy on Turing patterns in reaction-diffusion systems
We study the effect of randomness and anisotropy on Turing patterns in
reaction-diffusion systems. For this purpose, the Gierer-Meinhardt model of
pattern formation is considered. The cases we study are: (i)randomness in the
underlying lattice structure, (ii)the case in which there is a probablity p
that at a lattice site both reaction and diffusion occur, otherwise there is
only diffusion and lastly, the effect of (iii) anisotropic and (iv) random
diffusion coefficients on the formation of Turing patterns. The general
conclusion is that the Turing mechanism of pattern formation is fairly robust

Low-Energy Quasiparticles in Cuprate Superconductors: A Quantitative Analysis
A residual linear term is observed in the thermal conductivity of
optimally-doped Bi-2212 at very low temperatures whose magnitude is in
excellent agreement with the value expected from Fermi-liquid theory and the
d-wave energy spectrum measured by photoemission spectroscopy, with no
adjustable parameters. This solid basis allows us to make a quantitative
analysis of thermodynamic properties at low temperature and establish that
thermally-excited quasiparticles are a significant, perhaps even the dominant
mechanism in suppressing the superfluid density in cuprate superconductors

Quasiparticle-quasiparticle Scattering in High Tc Superconductors
The quasiparticle lifetime and the related transport relaxation times are the
fundamental quantities which must be known in order to obtain a description of
the transport properties of the high T_c superconductors. Studies of these
quantities have been undertaken previously for the d-wave, high T_c
superconductors for the case of temperature-independent elastic impurity
scattering. However, much less is known about the temperature-dependent
inelastic scattering. Here we give a detailed description of the
characteristics of the temperature-dependent quasiparticle-quasiparticle
scattering in d-wave superconductors, and find that this process gives a
natural explanation of the rapid variation with temperature of the electrical
transport relaxation rate.Comment: 4 page
Retrospective survey for sialidase activity in Mycoplasma pneumoniae isolates from cases of community-acquired pneumonia
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sialidase is a well-known virulence factor of other respiratory pathogens, but was only recently documented to occur in some species of <it>Mycoplasma</it>. The sialidase activity expressed can vary quantitatively among strains within a species of mycoplasma, from undetectable to amounts that correlate positively with strain virulence. Very few isolates of <it>Mycoplasma pneumoniae </it>had ever been examined for sialidase activity, so it was unknown whether sialidase may contribute to diseases involving this species.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>No sialidase activity was detected by spectrofluorometric assay of 15 laboratory strains and 91 clinical isolates of <it>M. pneumoniae </it>banked over many years from patients having radiologically-confirmed, uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The annotated genome of strain M129 (GenBank <ext-link ext-link-id="NC_000912" ext-link-type="gen">NC_000912</ext-link>, <ext-link ext-link-id="ATCC29342" ext-link-type="gen">ATCC 29342</ext-link>), also isolated from a patient with pneumonia, accurately represents the absence of sialidase genes from strains of <it>M. pneumoniae </it>typically associated with uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia. A possible involvement of sialidase in neurologic or other extra-respiratory manifestations of <it>M. pneumoniae </it>mycoplasmosis remains to be investigated.</p
Quasiparticle transport in the vortex state of YBa_2Cu_3O_6.9
The effect of vortices on quasiparticle transport in cuprate superconductors
was investigated by measuring the low temperature thermal conductivity of
YBa_2Cu_3O_6.9 in magnetic fields up to 8 T. The residual linear term (as T \to
0) is found to increase with field, directly reflecting the occupation of
extended quasiparticle states. A study for different Zn impurity concentrations
reveals a good agreement with recent calculations for a d-wave superconductor,
thereby shedding light on the nature of scattering by both impurities and
vortices. It also provides a quantitative measure of the gap near the nodes.Comment: 4 pages, 2 included eps figures, significant new analysis wrt other
