    Forecasting the CATS benchmark with the Double Vector Quantization method

    The Double Vector Quantization method, a long-term forecasting method based on the SOM algorithm, has been used to predict the 100 missing values of the CATS competition data set. An analysis of the proposed time series is provided to estimate the dimension of the auto-regressive part of this nonlinear auto-regressive forecasting method. Based on this analysis experimental results using the Double Vector Quantization (DVQ) method are presented and discussed. As one of the features of the DVQ method is its ability to predict scalars as well as vectors of values, the number of iterative predictions needed to reach the prediction horizon is further observed. The method stability for the long term allows obtaining reliable values for a rather long-term forecasting horizon.Comment: Accepted for publication in Neurocomputing, Elsevie

    A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible multiple-network poroelasticity

    In this paper, we present and analyze a new mixed finite element formulation of a general family of quasi-static multiple-network poroelasticity (MPET) equations. The MPET equations describe flow and deformation in an elastic porous medium that is permeated by multiple fluid networks of differing characteristics. As such, the MPET equations represent a generalization of Biot's equations, and numerical discretizations of the MPET equations face similar challenges. Here, we focus on the nearly incompressible case for which standard mixed finite element discretizations of the MPET equations perform poorly. Instead, we propose a new mixed finite element formulation based on introducing an additional total pressure variable. By presenting energy estimates for the continuous solutions and a priori error estimates for a family of compatible semi-discretizations, we show that this formulation is robust in the limits of incompressibility, vanishing storage coefficients, and vanishing transfer between networks. These theoretical results are corroborated by numerical experiments. Our primary interest in the MPET equations stems from the use of these equations in modelling interactions between biological fluids and tissues in physiological settings. So, we additionally present physiologically realistic numerical results for blood and tissue fluid flow interactions in the human brain

    Migraine, headache, and mortality in women: a cohort study

    Background: Migraine carries a high global burden, disproportionately affects women, and has been implicated as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Migraine with aura has been consistently associated with increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. However, published evidence on relationships between migraine or non-migraine headache and all-cause mortality is inconclusive. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the effect of non-migraine headache and migraine as well as migraine subtypes on all-cause and cause-specific mortality in women. Methods: In total, 27,844 Women’s Health Study participants, aged 45 years or older at baseline, were followed up for a median of 22.7 years. We included participants who provided information on migraine (past history, migraine without aura, or migraine with aura) or headache status and a blood sample at study start. An endpoints committee of physicians evaluated reports of incident deaths and used medical records to confirm deaths due to cardiovascular, cancer, or female-specific cancer causes. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the effect of migraine or headache status on both all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Results: Compared to individuals without any headache, no differences in all-cause mortality for individuals suffering from non-migraine headache or any migraine were observed after adjustment for confounding (HR = 1.01, 95%CI, 0.93–1.10 and HR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.89–1.04). No differences were observed for the migraine subtypes and all-cause death. Women having the migraine with aura subtype had a higher mortality due to cardiovascular disease (adjusted HR = 1.64, 95%CI: 1.06–2.54). As an explanation for the lack of overall association with all-cause mortality, we observed slightly protective signals for any cancer and female-specific cancers in this group. Conclusions: In this large prospective study of women, we found no association between non-migraine headache or migraine and all-cause mortality. Women suffering from migraine with aura had an increased risk of cardiovascular death. Future studies should investigate the reasons for the increased risk of cardiovascular mortality and evaluate whether changes in migraine patterns across the life course have differential effects on mortality

    In collaboration with the library, this project created an online archive of cultural heritage of the little-known Kam minority people in remote Guizhou Province in China. The archive consists of photographs, video recordings, audio recordings and field notes created by Marie Lee from 2009 to 2014 for the Kam Heritage Project. The archive is hosted at Pacific’s Scholarly Commons. Currently, there are over 3,000 photographs and videos uploaded in the archive. There have been over 43,000 downloads from viewers from all over the world, the majority coming from the education sector in the USA

    Diminishing Stigma Sentiments in Individuals with Depression: Sociopsychological Predictors of Deflecting and Challenging Coping Orientations

    Individuals who suffer from depression can be stigmatized by labeling and resort to negative stigma coping orientations such as secrecy and withdrawal, resulting in internalized self-stigma. Self-stigma can have negative effects such as low self-esteem, low self-efficacy, isolation, and feeling like a failure. Guided by modified labeling theory, the purpose of this study was to fill a gap in the literature on predictors of two orientations (challenging and deflecting) of positive stigma coping. Challenging stigma involves taking action, and deflecting is a cognitive strategy; both are used to positively cope with the stigma of mental illness. Predictors included symptom severity, depression literacy, stereotype awareness, treatment seeking, social support, and stigma sentiments in a sample of undergraduates (N = 195). Results from a canonical correlation found that individuals with high scores on deflecting and, simultaneously, low scores on challenging tended to have high scores on stigma sentiments and low scores on both symptom severity and treatment seeking. Analyzed in independent regressions, challenging was significantly predicted only by symptom severity (+), while deflecting was predicted by symptom severity (-), depression literacy (+), and stigma sentiments (+). These findings reinforce the potential for individuals who suffer from depression to address stigma using healthier and more affirming coping orientations. Implications for positive social change include a decrease in self-stigma regarding depression, less negative stigma coping, an increased awareness of how depression stigma affects individuals who suffer from the disorder, and a decrease in the social stigma of depression. Educators and practitioners can apply this information in academia, counseling, and clinical practice

    Computationally-Guided Thermostabilization of the Primary Endoglucanase from Hypocrea jerorina for Cellulosic Biofuel Production

    The creation of thermostable enzymes has wide-ranging applications in industrial, scientific, and pharmaceutical settings. As various stabilization techniques exist, it is often unclear how to best proceed. To this end, we have redesigned Cel5A (HjCel5A) from Hypocrea jecorina (anamorph Trichoderma reesei) to comparatively evaluate several significantly divergent stabilization methods: 1) consensus design, 2) core repacking, 3) helix dipole stabilization, 4) FoldX ΔΔG approximations, 5) Triad ΔΔG approximations, and 6) entropy reduction through backbone stabilization. As several of these techniques require structural data, we initially solved the first crystal structure of HjCel5A to 2.05 Å. Results from the stabilization experiments demonstrate that consensus design works best at accurately predicting highly stabilizing and active mutations. FoldX and helix dipole stabilization, however, also performed well. Both methods rely on structural data and can reveal non-conserved, structure-dependent mutations with high fidelity. HjCel5A is a prime target for stabilization. Capable of cleaving cellulose strands from agricultural waste into fermentable sugars, this protein functions as the primary endoglucanase in an organism commonly used in the sustainable biofuels industry. Creating a long-lived, highly active thermostable HjCel5A would allow cellulose hydrolysis to proceed more efficiently, lowering production expenses. We employed information gleaned during the survey of stabilization techniques to generate HjCel5A variants demonstrating a 12-15 °C increase in the temperature at which 50% of the total activity persists, an 11-14 °C increase in optimal operating temperature, and a 60% increase over the maximal amount of hydrolysis achievable using the wild type enzyme. We anticipate that our comparative analysis of stabilization methods will prove useful in future thermostabilization experiments.</p
