Insight Into the Formation of the Milky Way Through Cold Halo Substructure. III. Statistical Chemical Tagging in the Smooth Halo
We find that the relative contribution of satellite galaxies accreted at high
redshift to the stellar population of the Milky Way's smooth halo increases
with distance, becoming observable relative to the classical smooth halo about
15 kpc from the Galactic center. In particular, we determine
line-of-sight-averaged [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe] in the metal-poor main-sequence
turnoff (MPMSTO) population along every Sloan Extension for Galactic
Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) spectroscopic line of sight. Restricting
our sample to those lines of sight along which we do not detect elements of
cold halo substructure (ECHOS), we compile the largest spectroscopic sample of
stars in the smooth component of the halo ever observed in situ beyond 10 kpc.
We find significant spatial autocorrelation in [Fe/H] in the MPMSTO population
in the distant half of our sample beyond about 15 kpc from the Galactic center.
Inside of 15 kpc however, we find no significant spatial autocorrelation in
[Fe/H]. At the same time, we perform SEGUE-like observations of N-body
simulations of Milky Way analog formation. While we find that halos formed
entirely by accreted satellite galaxies provide a poor match to our
observations of the halo within 15 kpc of the Galactic center, we do observe
spatial autocorrelation in [Fe/H] in the simulations at larger distances. This
observation is an example of statistical chemical tagging and indicates that
spatial autocorrelation in metallicity is a generic feature of stellar halos
formed from accreted satellite galaxies.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, and 7 tables in emulateapj format; accepted for

Low Catalyst Loadings in Olefin Metathesis: Synthesis of Nitrogen Heterocycles by Ring-Closing Metathesis
A series of ruthenium catalysts have been screened under ring-closing metathesis (RCM) conditions to produce five-, six-, and seven-membered carbamate-protected cyclic amines. Many of these catalysts demonstrated excellent RCM activity and yields with as low as 500 ppm catalyst loadings. RCM of the five-membered carbamate series could be run neat, the six-membered carbamate series could be run at 1.0 M, and the seven-membered carbamate series worked best at 0.2−0.05 M
Multiply Folded Graphene
The folding of paper, hide, and woven fabric has been used for millennia to
achieve enhanced articulation, curvature, and visual appeal for intrinsically
flat, two-dimensional materials. For graphene, an ideal two-dimensional
material, folding may transform it to complex shapes with new and distinct
properties. Here, we present experimental results that folded structures in
graphene, termed grafold, exist, and their formations can be controlled by
introducing anisotropic surface curvature during graphene synthesis or transfer
processes. Using pseudopotential-density functional theory calculations, we
also show that double folding modifies the electronic band structure of
graphene. Furthermore, we demonstrate the intercalation of C60 into the
grafolds. Intercalation or functionalization of the chemically reactive folds
further expands grafold's mechanical, chemical, optical, and electronic
diversity.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures (accepted in Phys. Rev. B

Anatomic brain asymmetry in vervet monkeys.
Asymmetry is a prominent feature of human brains with important functional consequences. Many asymmetric traits show population bias, but little is known about the genetic and environmental sources contributing to inter-individual variance. Anatomic asymmetry has been observed in Old World monkeys, but the evidence for the direction and extent of asymmetry is equivocal and only one study has estimated the genetic contributions to inter-individual variance. In this study we characterize a range of qualitative and quantitative asymmetry measures in structural brain MRIs acquired from an extended pedigree of Old World vervet monkeys (n = 357), and implement variance component methods to estimate the proportion of trait variance attributable to genetic and environmental sources. Four of six asymmetry measures show pedigree-level bias and one of the traits has a significant heritability estimate of about 30%. We also found that environmental variables more significantly influence the width of the right compared to the left prefrontal lobe
Electrical properties of Bi-implanted amorphous chalcogenide films
The impact of Bi implantation on the conductivity and the thermopower of
amorphous chalcogenide films is investigated. Incorporation of Bi in Ge-Sb-Te
and GeTe results in enhanced conductivity. The negative Seebeck coefficient
confirms onset of the electron conductivity in GeTe implanted with Bi at a dose
of 2x1016 cm-2. The enhanced conductivity is accompanied by defect accumulation
in the films upon implantation as is inferred by using analysis of the
space-charge limited current. The results indicate that native coordination
defects in lone-pair semiconductors can be deactivated by means of ion
implantation, and higher conductivity of the films stems from additional
electrically active defects created by implantation of bismuth.Comment: This is an extended version of the results presented in Proc. SPIE

SENP3-mediated deSUMOylation of dynamin-related protein 1 promotes cell death following ischaemia
Global increases in small ubiquitin‐like modifier (SUMO)‐2/3 conjugation are a neuroprotective response to severe stress but the mechanisms and specific target proteins that determine cell survival have not been identified. Here, we demonstrate that the SUMO‐2/3‐specific protease SENP3 is degraded during oxygen/glucose deprivation (OGD), an in vitro model of ischaemia, via a pathway involving the unfolded protein response (UPR) kinase PERK and the lysosomal enzyme cathepsin B. A key target for SENP3‐mediated deSUMOylation is the GTPase Drp1, which plays a major role in regulating mitochondrial fission. We show that depletion of SENP3 prolongs Drp1 SUMOylation, which suppresses Drp1‐mediated cytochrome c release and caspase‐mediated cell death. SENP3 levels recover following reoxygenation after OGD allowing deSUMOylation of Drp1, which facilitates Drp1 localization at mitochondria and promotes fragmentation and cytochrome c release. RNAi knockdown of SENP3 protects cells from reoxygenation‐induced cell death via a mechanism that requires Drp1 SUMOylation. Thus, we identify a novel adaptive pathway to extreme cell stress in which dynamic changes in SENP3 stability and regulation of Drp1 SUMOylation are crucial determinants of cell fate
Acid-Labile Traceless Click Linker for Protein Transduction
Intracellular delivery of active proteins presents an interesting approach in research and therapy. We created a protein transduction shuttle based on a new traceless click linker that combines the advantages of click reactions with implementation of reversible pH-sensitive bonds. The azidomethyl-methylmaleic anhydride (AzMMMan) linker was found compatible with different click chemistries, demonstrated in bioreversible protein modification with dyes, polyethylene glycol, or a transduction carrier. Linkages were stable at physiological pH but reversible at the mild acidic pH of endosomes or lysosomes. We show that pH-reversible attachment of a defined endosome-destabilizing three-arm oligo(ethane amino)amide carrier generates an effective shuttle for protein delivery. The cargo protein nlsEGFP, when coupled via the traceless AzMMMan linker, experiences efficient cellular uptake and endosomal escape into the cytosol, followed by import into the nucleus. In contrast, irreversible linkage to the same shuttle hampers nuclear delivery of nlsEGFP which after uptake remains trapped in the cytosol. Successful intracellular delivery of bioactive ß-galactosidase as a model enzyme was also demonstrated using the pH-controlled shuttle system
J/Psi Propagation in Hadronic Matter
We study J/ propagation in hot hadronic matter using a four-flavor
chiral Lagrangian to model the dynamics and using QCD sum rules to model the
finite size effects manifested in vertex interactions through form factors.
Charmonium breakup due to scattering with light mesons is the primary
impediment to continued propagation. Breakup rates introduce nontrivial
temperature and momentum dependence into the J/ spectral function.Comment: 6 Pages LaTeX, 3 postscript figures. Proceedings for Strangeness in

A Copper-Mediated Conjugate Addition Approach to Analogues of Aconitine-Type Diterpenoid Alkaloids.
A copper-mediated conjugate addition of electron-rich aryl groups into a complex vinyl nitrile using arylmagnesium bromides is reported. The conjugate addition adducts were advanced toward the synthesis of designed aconitine-type analogues. The variation in oxygenation patterns on the arene coupling partner, introduced through the current conjugate addition approach, may ultimately provide insight into structure-activity relationships of the diterpenoid alkaloids
