    The Formation of Trust and Commitment in Business Relationships in the Middle East: Understanding Et-Moone Relationships

    In recent years, different forms of relationships that are culturally bond have emerged such as; ‘Guanxi’ in China (Yau, Lee, Chow, Sing, and Tse, 2000; Lou, 2007; Liu, Li, Tao and Wang, 2008), ‘Blat’ in Russia (Michailova and Worm, 2003) and ‘Boon Koon’ in Thailand (Pimpa, 2008). While these special forms of relationships are culturally bond, studies have also suggested that the development of a business relationship is directly linked to the development of trust and commitment (Wilson, 1995). Considering that these forms are culturally bond, studies from the Middle East on the formation of trust and commitment within relationship development are largely absent. We argue that understanding the dynamic formation of trust and commitment will help to better understand Et-Moone business relationships within the specific cultural context of the Middle East. Thus, this study combines the insights from the theory of life-cycle (Ford, 1980; Dwyer et al., 1987) and the theory of trust and commitment by Morgan and Hunt (1994) to understand business relationships in the Middle East. Based on qualitative research using a longitudinal approach and 33 semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted in 2003, this study finds the relationship between trust and commitment to be far more dynamic and changeable as the relationship evolves. Also, it finds that trust and commitment are major factors in establishing Et-Moone relationships

    Topological magnon-photon interaction for cavity magnonics

    The study of cavity magnonics and topological insulators has made significant advances over the past decade, however the possibility of combining the two fields is still unexplored. Here, we explore such connection by investigating hybrid cavity systems that incorporate both a ferromagnet and a topological insulator. We find that electrons in the topological surface state efficiently mediate the effective electric dipole coupling between the spin of the ferromagnet and the electric field of the cavity, in contrast with the conventional cavity magnonics theory based on magnetic dipole coupling. We refer to this coupling as topological magnon-photon interaction, estimating it one order of magnitude stronger than the conventional magnon-photon coupling, and showing that its sign can be manipulated. We discuss the potential of our proposed device to allow for scaling down and controlling the cavity system using electronics. Our results provide solid ground for exploring the functionalities enabled by merging cavity magnonics with topological insulators.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Accepted version to Communications Physic

    Clinical Comparison of the Auditory Steady-State Response with the Click Auditory Brainstem Response in Infants

    ObjectivesOur goal was to determine the effectiveness of using the auditory steady state response (ASSR) as a measure of hearing thresholds in infants who are suspected of having significant hearing loss, as compared with using the click-auditory brainstem response (C-ABR).MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the audiologic profiles of 76 infants (46 boys and 30 girls, a total of 151 ears) who ranged in age from 1 to 12 months (average age: 5.7 months). The auditory evaluations in 76 infants who were suspected of having hearing loss were done via the C-ABR and ASSR. In addition, for reference, the mean ASSR thresholds were compared to those of 39 ears of infants and 39 ears of adults with normal hearing at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz.ResultsThe highest correlation between the C-ABR and ASSR thresholds was observed at an average of 2-4 kHz (r=0.94). On comparison between the hearing of infants and adults at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz, the mean ASSR threshold in infants was 12, 7, 8, and 7 dB higher, respectively, than that in adults.ConclusionASSR testing may provide additional audiometric information for accurately predicting the hearing sensitivity, and this is essential for the management of infants with severe to profound hearing loss

    Imiquimod enhances excitability of dorsal root ganglion neurons by inhibiting background (K2P) and voltage-gated (Kv1.1 and Kv1.2) potassium channels

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Imiquimod (IQ) is known as an agonist of Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) and is widely used to treat various infectious skin diseases. However, it causes severe itching sensation as its side effect. The precise mechanism of how IQ causes itching sensation is unknown. A recent report suggested a molecular target of IQ as TLR7 expressed in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. However, we recently proposed a TLR7-independent mechanism, in which the activation of TLR7 is not required for the action of IQ in DRG neurons. To resolve this controversy regarding the involvement of TLR7 and to address the exact molecular identity of itching sensation by IQ, we investigated the possible molecular target of IQ in DRG neurons.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>When IQ was applied to DRG neurons, we observed an increase in action potential (AP) duration and membrane resistance both in wild type and TLR7-deficient mice. Based on these results, we tested whether the treatment of IQ has an effect on the activity of K<sup>+ </sup>channels, K<sub>v</sub>1.1 and K<sub>v</sub>1.2 (voltage-gated K<sup>+ </sup>channels) and TREK1 and TRAAK (K<sub>2P </sub>channels). IQ effectively reduced the currents mediated by both K<sup>+ </sup>channels in a dose-dependent manner, acting as an antagonist at TREK1 and TRAAK and as a partial antagonist at K<sub>v</sub>1.1 and K<sub>v</sub>1.2.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results demonstrate that IQ blocks the voltage-gated K<sup>+ </sup>channels to increase AP duration and K<sub>2P </sub>channels to increase membrane resistance, which are critical for the membrane excitability of DRG neurons. Therefore, we propose that IQ enhances the excitability of DRG neurons by blocking multiple potassium channels and causing pruritus.</p

    The promoter -1031(T/C) polymorphism in tumor necrosis factor-alpha associated with polycystic ovary syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A <it>tumor necrosis factor-alpha </it>is a multifunctional pro-inflammation cytokine, which has been considered as one of pathogenic factors for various diseases. The promoter -1031(T/C) polymorphism in the <it>tumor necrosis factor-alpha </it>gene was reported that it plays a part in reproduction-related diseases. Among these, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is known to be a common gynecological disease of women in reproductive age women. Here, we performed a comparative study of -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene with PCOS in a Korean population.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) in a total of 217 PCOS patients and 144 matched female controls of healthy women. And statistical analysis was performed using HapAnalyzer. <it>X</it><sup>2 </sup>test and logistic regression were utilized analyze the association between two groups. A <it>p</it>-value under 0.05 was considered statistically significant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The genotype and allelic frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). There was strong association between the -1031(T/C) polymorphism in the promoter region of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene and PCOS (<it>p</it>-value = 0.0003, odd ratio (OR) = 2.53). In addition, the frequency of C allele was significantly higher in PCOS patients compared with controls. Sequence analyses also showed the -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first study on the -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene in PCOS. We concluded that the -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene is associated with PCOS in a Korean population. Therefore, it is possible that it may be considered as a clinical biomarker to diagnose for PCOS, and is helpful in understanding the etiology for the pathogenesis of PCOS.</p

    Dual quadratic differentials and entire minimal graphs in Heisenberg space

    We define holomorphic quadratic differentials for spacelike surfaces with constant mean curvature in the Lorentzian homogeneous spaces L(κ,τ)\mathbb{L}(\kappa,\tau) with isometry group of dimension 4, which are dual to the Abresch-Rosenberg differentials in the Riemannian counterparts E(κ,τ)\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau), and obtain some consequences. On the one hand, we give a very short proof of the Bernstein problem in Heisenberg space, and provide a geometric description of the family of entire graphs sharing the same differential in terms of a 2-parameter conformal deformation. On the other hand, we prove that entire minimal graphs in Heisenberg space have negative Gauss curvature.Comment: 19 page
