    Weakly-supervised appraisal analysis

    This article is concerned with the computational treatment of Appraisal, a Systemic Functional Linguistic theory of the types of language employed to communicate opinion in English. The theory considers aspects such as Attitude (how writers communicate their point of view), Engagement (how writers align themselves with respect to the opinions of others) and Graduation (how writers amplify or diminish their attitudes and engagements). To analyse text according to the theory we employ a weakly-supervised approach to text classification, which involves comparing the similarity of words with prototypical examples of classes. We evaluate the method's performance using a collection of book reviews annotated according to the Appraisal theory

    Exploring the structure of a real-time, arbitrary neural artistic stylization network

    In this paper, we present a method which combines the flexibility of the neural algorithm of artistic style with the speed of fast style transfer networks to allow real-time stylization using any content/style image pair. We build upon recent work leveraging conditional instance normalization for multi-style transfer networks by learning to predict the conditional instance normalization parameters directly from a style image. The model is successfully trained on a corpus of roughly 80,000 paintings and is able to generalize to paintings previously unobserved. We demonstrate that the learned embedding space is smooth and contains a rich structure and organizes semantic information associated with paintings in an entirely unsupervised manner.Comment: Accepted as an oral presentation at British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC) 201

    Is Criminology Moving Toward a Paradigm Shift?: Evidence from a Survey of the American Society of Criminology

    Ideology forms and colors our attitudes and values in ways that lead to a tendency to accept or reject data according to how well or how poorly they cohere with that ideology. Previous research has suggested that the ideological divide in criminology is between criminologists who focus on strictly environmentalist theories that give short shrift to individual differences, and those who focus on individual differences and are favorably disposed to the biological sciences (Wright & Miller, 1998; Walsh & Ellis, 2004). The former tend to be radicals and liberals and the latter tend to be conservatives and moderates, although there is no one-to-one correspondence (Wright & Miller, 1998). The theoretical disarray in criminology occasioned by this tendency (among other things) has been noted by a number of scholars (Barak, 1998; Dantzker, 1998; Walsh, 2002). The present study repeats and extends these earlier studies with the goals of evaluating the relationship between ideology and favored theory in comparison with the earlier studies to ascertain if the grip of ideology is loosening, and of assessing the possibility of interdisciplinary integration

    [\u3csup\u3e3\u3c/sup\u3eH]ā€‘Raffinose, a Novel Radioactive Label for Determining Organ Sites of Catabolism of Proteins in the Circulation

    The primary tissue sites of catabolism of plasma proteins with long circulating half-lives are unknown. It has been difficult to identify these sites because plasma proteins are delivered to tissues at relatively slow rates but are rapidly degraded intracellularly within lysosomes. Therefore, a tracer attached to protein is lost from the site of uptake before an amount sufficient for quantitation can accumulate. We hypothesized that sucrose (Glupal-2 /3Fruf) would be a useful label to circumvent this difficulty because of the stability of sucrose in lysosomes; and thus, sucrose should remain in tissue long after the protein to which it was attached had been degraded to products released from the lysosome. [G-3HJRaffinose (RAF, Galpal- Glupcwl- 2flFruf) was selected as the vehicle for attaching sucrose to protein. [31XjRAF was converted to the C-6 aldehydogalactose form with galactose oxidase and then covalently coupled to protein by reductive amination using NaBH3CN. [ā€˜H]RAF was coupled first to two relatively long lived plasma proteins, bovine serum albumin and fetuin. The half-lives of these proteins in the rat circulation (&,* = -24 h) was unchanged, suggesting that RAF did not alter the normal mechanisms of protein clearance. When attached to short lived proteins with known sites of catabolism, such as asialofetuin, RNase B, and heatdenatured albumin, neither the tissue nor cellular sites of uptake of the proteins were altered. Thus, 13H]RAFasialofetuin was recovered almost exclusively (\u3e90%) in the liver parenchymal cell fraction, while both [JHJRAF-labeled RNase B and heat-denatured albumin were recovered primarily (\u3e85%) in nonparenchymal cells. In addition, the RAF label was observed to reside stably (tl,2 \u3e 100 h) in the liver following degradation of the carrier protein; in contrast, radioactivity from ā€œā€˜Ilabeled asialofetuin or RNase B was rapidly (tl,z \u3c 30 min) lost from liver. Radioactivity from 13H]RAF-proteins was recovered in a lysosomally enriched subcellular fraction in liver and consisted of a low molecular weight species (-llOO), containing both glucose and fructose in a ratio similar to that in the original protein. The results of these studies establish that 13H]RAF useful radioactive tracer for detecting the tissue and cellular sites of catabolism of long lived circulating proteins

    Environment-Sensitive Intrusion Detection

    Abstract. We perform host-based intrusion detection by constructing a model from a programā€™s binary code and then restricting the programā€™s execution by the model. We improve the effectiveness of such model-based intrusion detection systems by incorporating into the model knowledge of the environment in which the program runs, and by increasing the accuracy of our models with a new dataflow analysis algorithm for context-sensitive recovery of static data. The environmentā€”configuration files, command-line parameters, and environment variablesā€”constrains acceptable process execution. Environment dependencies added to a program model update the model to the current environment at every program execution. Our new static data-flow analysis associates a programā€™s data flows with specific calling contexts that use the data. We use this analysis to differentiate systemcall arguments flowing from distinct call sites in the program. Using a new average reachability measure suitable for evaluation of call-stackbased program models, we demonstrate that our techniques improve the precision of several test programs ā€™ models from 76 % to 100%

    Hardware demonstration of high-speed networks for satellite applications.

    This report documents the implementation results of a hardware demonstration utilizing the Serial RapidIO{trademark} and SpaceWire protocols that was funded by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL's) Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) office. This demonstration was one of the activities in the Modeling and Design of High-Speed Networks for Satellite Applications LDRD. This effort has demonstrated the transport of application layer packets across both RapidIO and SpaceWire networks to a common downlink destination using small topologies comprised of commercial-off-the-shelf and custom devices. The RapidFET and NEX-SRIO debug and verification tools were instrumental in the successful implementation of the RapidIO hardware demonstration. The SpaceWire hardware demonstration successfully demonstrated the transfer and routing of application data packets between multiple nodes and also was able reprogram remote nodes using configuration bitfiles transmitted over the network, a key feature proposed in node-based architectures (NBAs). Although a much larger network (at least 18 to 27 nodes) would be required to fully verify the design for use in a real-world application, this demonstration has shown that both RapidIO and SpaceWire are capable of routing application packets across a network to a common downlink node, illustrating their potential use in real-world NBAs

    Towards an immersive learning knowledge tree: a conceptual framework for mapping knowledge and tools in the field

    iLRN 2021. Online and in Virtual Reality (17 May - 10 June, 2021)The interdisciplinary field of immersive learning research is scattered. Combining efforts for better exploration of this field from the different disciplines requires researchers to communicate and coordinate effectively. We call upon the community of immersive learning researchers for planting the Knowledge Tree of Immersive Learning Research, a proposal for a systematization effort for this field, combining both scholarly and practical knowledge, cultivating a robust and ever-growing knowledge base and methodological toolbox for immersive learning. This endeavor aims at promoting evidence-informed practice and guiding future research in the field. This paper contributes with the rationale for three objectives: 1) Developing common scientific terminology amidst the community of researchers; 2) Cultivating a common understanding of methodology, and 3) Advancing common use of theoretical approaches, frameworks, and models.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
