    Experimental investigation on cold-formed steel beams under pure bending

    This paper presents the flexural behaviour of cold-formed double lipped channels beams under pure bending action. Two channel sections are bolted back-to-back to form an I-shape structural beam member. A series of six experiment tests were carried out on beam specimens DC200 and DC250, each with 200 mm depth and 250 mm depth respectively. The thickness of beam section is 2 mm and the design yield strength is 350 N/mm2. All beams failed at local buckling at top-flange due to lateral instability of the cold-formed steel structural members. The moment resistance for DC200 is 17.87 kNm and DC250 is 31.53 kNm. The experimental results are compared to theoretical resistance prediction based on British Standard and Eurocode. The comparison showed that the experimental moment capacity is lower than the theoretical bending moment resistance but higher than theoretical buckling moment resistance from Eurocode. This showed that a better agreement is achieved between experimental data and Eurocode buckling moment resistance for cold-formed steel beam under pure bending

    CleanNet: Transfer Learning for Scalable Image Classifier Training with Label Noise

    In this paper, we study the problem of learning image classification models with label noise. Existing approaches depending on human supervision are generally not scalable as manually identifying correct or incorrect labels is time-consuming, whereas approaches not relying on human supervision are scalable but less effective. To reduce the amount of human supervision for label noise cleaning, we introduce CleanNet, a joint neural embedding network, which only requires a fraction of the classes being manually verified to provide the knowledge of label noise that can be transferred to other classes. We further integrate CleanNet and conventional convolutional neural network classifier into one framework for image classification learning. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm on both of the label noise detection task and the image classification on noisy data task on several large-scale datasets. Experimental results show that CleanNet can reduce label noise detection error rate on held-out classes where no human supervision available by 41.5% compared to current weakly supervised methods. It also achieves 47% of the performance gain of verifying all images with only 3.2% images verified on an image classification task.     摘要1950年代,港臺新儒家曾提出「儒學開出民主論」。在他們與臺灣自由主義者的辯論之中,此說也成為雙方爭論的焦點之一。對筆者而言,此說的意涵並不複雜難解,但奇怪的是:它卻不斷引起誤解與質疑。多年來,筆者曾針對這些誤解撰寫了一系列的論文,故本文不再重述相關的細節,而是從宏觀的角度申論一些未盡之意。關鍵詞: 台灣新儒家, 儒學開出民主論, 自由主義, 政治思想, 良知的自我坎陷AbstractIn the 1950s, Contemporary Modern Confucians of Hong Kong and Taiwan have exposed the theory of the “Development of Democracy from Confucianism”. In their controversies with the Taiwanese liberals, this theory also became one of the main points of debate. The author of the present article believes that the contents of this theory are not too complicated to understand; however, it nevertheless often became subject of various misunderstandings and questionings. During the past years, the author has written several studies on this topic, aiming to clarify such misunderstandings and to responding to such questionings. Therefore, the present article does not restate the details of this theory, but rather aims to provide further explanations of its essential meaning. V petdesetih letih smo bili priča razpravi med sodobnimi konfucianci iz Hong Konga in Tajvana na eni in liberalno strujo tajvanskih izobražencev na drugi strani. Razprava se je osredotočila predvsem na vprašanje, ali je tradicionalna kitajska kultura in zlasti konfucijanska miselnost primerna za razvoj znanosti, tehnologije in demokratičnega političnega sistema zahodnega tipa. V tem kontekstu so moderni konfucijanci iz Hong Konga in Tajvana izpostavili teorijo o »razvoju demokracije iz konfucianizma«. Ker je avtor tega članka že v več preteklih študijah poskusil razjasniti različne nesporazume povezane s temi vprašanji, ta članek ne prinaša podrobnosti glede zgoraj omenjene teorije. Namesto tega raje nudi dodatno razlago o pomenu teorij. Čeprav moderni konfucijanci na eni strani priznavajo, da v tradicionalnem konfucijanstvu ti elementi sicer niso bili prisotni, vendar to še ne pomeni, da konfucijanska tradicija razvoj moderne države s temi atributi zavira, so bili liberalci prepričani o nasprotnem in so zato poudarjali, da mora Kitajska, če želi postati moderna, tehnološko razvita in demokratična država, odstraniti vse prežitke konfucijanske miselnosti. V tej polemiki se je izkazalo, da so moderni konfucijanci sicer priznavali razliko med politiko in moralo, vendar so sistem politične svobode na teoretski ravni pogojevali z moralno svobodo. Predstavniki liberalnega tabora so zanikali njihovo predpostavko, po kateri naj bi bila politična svoboda osnovana na moralni, kajti to bi po njihovem mnenju v najboljšem primeru privedlo do »totalitarne demokracije«. Skozi poglobljene analize te polemike avtor pride do zaključka, da demokracija in tradicionalni konfucianizem ne izključujeta drug drugega. Avtor izpostavlja dejstvo, da tajvanski konfucijanci niso nikoli zavračali demokratičnega razvoja na osnovi kulturno pogojenih razlik. V tem smislu so tajvanski moderni konfucijanci nemalo – četudi posredno – prispevali k procesu demokratizacije njihove države

    Nonlinear Dynamic Modeling of a Once-Through Steam Generator

    A detailed, nonlinear, many lump, moving boundary dynamic model for a helical coiled once-through steam generator with nonuniform tube cross section is developed. Six flow regimes are employed in the model; each regime may consist of more than one section. The responses for two lumping cases (i.e., two sets, each with a different number of sections in the model) are compared with the same perturbations. Bases for selection of the number of sections and the calculational time step are suggested. The steady state calculation for generating the state variable distributions along the tube coordinate is developed. Information obtained from the steady state distributions is compared with transient response at the final observation time. The comparisons for all individual steam generator input perturbations are satisfactory. Confidence in the correctness of the steady state calculation is obtained from the comparison of the steady state results with a set of design data. Nonlinearity of the steam generator responses is studied. Comparison of the transient responses with two other models is given. The Fort St. Vrain 330 MW(e) steam generator is used as the reference design for this study

    A comparison study of the energetics of standing and transient eddies between two general circulation models: the GLAS Climate Model and the NCAR Community Climate Model

    The energetics of standing and transient eddies simulated by the GLAS Climate Model (CM) and the NCAR Community Climate Model (CCM) in both winter and summer are compared in the physical and spectral domains to provide insight into their structure and maintenance and possible clues for the improvement of the models. Particular attention is focused on the 3-dimensional distributions of the energetics of standing eddies. Contributions from the long-wave regime to the standing eddies are also examined;In the winter Northern Hemisphere, it is found that the structure of standing eddies is closely associated with the distribution of continents and oceans, and that the maintenance of standing eddies is closely related to the jet streams. It is worth noting that over the eastern and western Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, where the standing eddy kinetic energy is most prominent, there are strong conversions from both the standing eddy available potential energy and the mean zonal flow kinetic energy to the standing eddy kinetic energy. The structure and maintenance of transient eddies correspond well with the features of the major storm tracks. The transient eddies tend to dissipate the standing eddies at locations where standing eddies are intense;Standing eddy energies and conversions are dominated by long waves in both models. In both models, standing long waves are generally not strong enough. It is noted that, in the NCAR CCM, both the available potential and kinetic energies of the total and standing wavenumber 2 are stronger than the GLAS CM;The topography and the land-sea contrast are similar between these two models. And it is noted that the geographical distributions of the thermal and dynamic fields of standing eddies and their related conversions are closely related to the strength and location of the jet streams which is essentially maintained by the diabatic heating fields. In addition, the more realistic simulation of jet streams by the NCAR CCM has been attributed to the more proper treatment in the radiative processes. Therefore, it is suggested that the differences in the behavior of standing eddies between these two models are primarily due to the differences in their heating fields
