The aim was to analyse the short term price fluctuation of fresh vegetables at the Palmerston North auction market. A brief review of the theoretical and methodological aspects in relation to this topic is outlined. An econometric recursive model was developed in the "inductive phase" to represent the past behaviour of the industry. The simulation model was developed in the "deductive phase" for testing the sensitivity of the model and policy assessment. The results indicated that: 1) The wholesale demand for cabbages and cauliflowers is relatively inelastic (-0.5034 and -0.8142 respectively) while that of lettuces (-1.434) was elastic. Carrots showed nonsignificant positive relationship between quantity purchased and price (+1.935). 2) The simulation model was relatively insensitive to changes in its parameters. It was proved that the supply of fresh vegetables was mainly governed by the seasonal factor. 3) The policy of supply rationalisation could reduce price variance and supply variance by 18% and 45% respectively, while the gross income and unweighted mean price could be increased by 8.7% and 0.3% respectively

Wearing Many (Social) Hats: How Different are Your Different Social Network Personae?

This paper investigates when users create profiles in different social networks, whether they are redundant expressions of the same persona, or they are adapted to each platform. Using the personal webpages of 116,998 users on About.me, we identify and extract matched user profiles on several major social networks including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. We find evidence for distinct site-specific norms, such as differences in the language used in the text of the profile self-description, and the kind of picture used as profile image. By learning a model that robustly identifies the platform given a user's profile image (0.657--0.829 AUC) or self-description (0.608--0.847 AUC), we confirm that users do adapt their behaviour to individual platforms in an identifiable and learnable manner. However, different genders and age groups adapt their behaviour differently from each other, and these differences are, in general, consistent across different platforms. We show that differences in social profile construction correspond to differences in how formal or informal the platform is.Comment: Accepted at the 11th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM17

Enhancement of Wear and Corrosion Resistance of Beta Titanium Alloy by Laser Technology

    Get PDF
The relatively high elastic modulus coupled with the presence of toxic vanadium (V) in Ti6Al4V alloy has long been a concern in orthopaedic applications. To solve the problem, a variety of non-toxic and low modulus beta-titanium (beta-Ti) alloys have been developed. Among the beta-Ti alloy family, the quaternary Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta (TZNT) alloys have received the highest attention as a promising replacement for Ti6Al4V due to their lower elastic modulus and outstanding long term stability against corrosion in biological environments. However, the inferior wear resistance of TNZT is still a problem that must be resolved before commercialising in the orthopaedic market. In this work, a newly-developed laser surface treatment technique was employed to improve the surface properties of Ti-35.3Nb-7.3Zr-5.7Ta alloy. The surface microstructure and composition of the laser-treated TNZT surface were examined by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GI-XRD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The wear and corrosion resistance were evaluated by pin-on-plate sliding test and anodic polarisation test in Hanks’ solution. The experimental results were compared with the untreated (or base) TNZT material. The research findings showed that the laser surface treatment technique reported in this work can effectively improve the wear and corrosion resistance of TNZT. The enhancement of such surface properties was due to the formation of a smooth and hard layer on the substrate surface. The laser-formed layer was metallurgically bonded to the substrate, and had no concern of coating delamination or peel-off.Acknowledgments The work described in this paper was supported by research grants from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (G-YK36 and G-YM75), Hong Kong Special Administration Region, China, and the Queen’s University Belfast (Start-up Research Fund: D8201MAS), United Kingdom

Survival from cardiovascular events as predicated by carotid (common carotid artery) intima-media thickness and Doppler values in ischaemic Chinese patients requiring coronary angiogrm

INTRODUCTION: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) of the common carotid artery may be correlated to the presence of coronary artery disease. However, the role of the cIMT and Doppler findings in predicting subsequent cardiovascular events has not been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value. METHODS: A total of 212 consecutive Chinese patients undergoing clinically driven coronary angiogram were evaluated. Carotid parameters (cIMT, peak systolic velocity [PSV] and end diastolic velocity, at the bulb, internal and common carotid artery, on both sides) were analysed using the IE33 auto-detection program. Patients were followed up and monitored for the occurrence of the primary composite end-point (PCEP), defined as all cardiovascular deaths, non-fatal MI, stroke, CHF, ACS or arrhythmias requiring hospitalisation or intervention. RESULTS: To date, the mean follow-up time was 534±234 days. The PCEP was reached in 25 subjects (11.8%). The right common cIMT was shown to be a predictor for critical coronary stenosis requiring PCI (area under ROC curve=0.626, P=0.001). cIMT <0.8 mm was associated with a better survival (log rank test, P=0.029). Univariate analysis, a right common cIMT of ≥0.8mm, the right common carotid PSV, and the waist circumference were independent predictors for the PCEP. Cox proportional hazards model adjusted for age showed the right common carotid PSV was the only independent predictor for the PCEP (HR=0.963; 95% CI, 0.939-0.987, P=0.002). Similar correlations were not observed with the overall (left and right) cIMT or the left cIMT in this study. CONCLUSION: The right common carotid PSV and the right common cIMT ≥0.8 mm are shown to predict the cardiovascular survival in this study. The latter also strongly correlates with the presence of critical coronary stenosis requiring intervention.published_or_final_versionThe 14th Medical Research Conference, Department of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 10 January 2009.

Risk factors for severe hand foot mouth disease in Singapore: a case control study

BACKGROUND: Hand foot mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infection that can potentially lead to serious complications. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors of acquiring severe HFMD in our population. METHODS: We performed a case control study using patients admitted to our hospital from August 2004 to July 2014. Cases were patients with severe HFMD disease while controls were age-matched patients obtained from the same year, in a 2:1 ratio. Data comprising demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms and signs, and lab findings were collected. Conditional univariable logistic regression was performed to determine risk factors for severe disease. RESULTS: A total of 24 cases of severe HFMD were identified and matched with 48 controls. Seventeen (70.8 %) cases had central nervous system complications. Seven (29.2 %) had cardiovascular complications without evidence of myocarditis. One patient died of encephalitis. The overall mortality of severe disease is 4 %. Evidence of hypoperfusion, seizure, altered mentation, meningeal irritation, tachycardia, tachypnea, raised absolute neutrophil count and EV-A71 (Enterovirus A71) positivity were significantly associated with a severe course of HFMD. CONCLUSION: In managing children with HFMD, physicians should consider these factors to help identify patients at risk for severe disease
