"Together we teach them safe sex" HIV education program for men who have sex with men (MSM)
Gay men were the first to be blamed for AIDS. The first reported case, of what later came to be known as AIDS, was identified in 1981 in the USA among gay men. The disease was quickly termed as the âgay plagueâ by the media, with massive blame unjustifiably heaped on to gay men. The linking of gay men to AIDS led to the development of a homophobia among the general public and an AIDS phobia within the gay community. This initial strong stigmatisation and discrimination against gay men and / or MSM (Men Who Have Sex with Men) has been enduring. Mass fluxes and isofluxes of methane (CH4) at a New Hampshire fen measured by a continuous wave quantum cascade laser spectrometer
We have developed a midâinfrared continuousâwave quantum cascade laser directâabsorption spectrometer (QCLS) capable of high frequency (â„1 Hz) measurements of 12CH4 and 13CH4 isotopologues of methane (CH4) with in situ 1âs RMS image precision of 1.5 â° and Allanâminimum precision of 0.2 â°. We deployed this QCLS in a wellâstudied New Hampshire fen to compare measurements of CH4 isoflux by eddy covariance (EC) to Keeling regressions of data from automated flux chamber sampling. Mean CH4 fluxes of 6.5 ± 0.7 mg CH4 mâ2 hrâ1 over two days of EC sampling in July, 2009 were indistinguishable from mean autochamber CH4 fluxes (6.6 ± 0.8 mgCH4 mâ2 hrâ1) over the same period. Mean image composition of emitted CH4 calculated using EC isoflux methods was â71 ± 8 â° (95% C.I.) while Keeling regressions of 332 chamber closing events over 8 days yielded a corresponding value of â64.5 ± 0.8 â°. Ebullitive fluxes, representing âŒ10% of total CH4 fluxes at this site, were on average 1.2 â° enriched in 13C compared to diffusive fluxes. CH4 isoflux time series have the potential to improve processâbased understanding of methanogenesis, fully characterize source isotopic distributions, and serve as additional constraints for both regional and global CH4 modeling analysis
Iterative in Situ Click Chemistry Assembles a Branched Capture Agent and Allosteric Inhibitor for Akt1
We describe the use of iterative in situ click chemistry to design an Akt-specific branched peptide triligand that is a drop-in replacement for monoclonal antibodies in multiple biochemical assays. Each peptide module in the branched structure makes unique contributions to affinity and/or specificity resulting in a 200 nM affinity ligand that efficiently immunoprecipitates Akt from cancer cell lysates and labels Akt in fixed cells. Our use of a small molecule to preinhibit Akt prior to screening resulted in low micromolar inhibitory potency and an allosteric mode of inhibition, which is evidenced through a series of competitive enzyme kinetic assays. To demonstrate the efficiency and selectivity of the protein-templated in situ click reaction, we developed a novel QPCR-based methodology that enabled a quantitative assessment of its yield. These results point to the potential for iterative in situ click chemistry to generate potent, synthetically accessible antibody replacements with novel inhibitory properties
Intercomparison of field measurements of nitrous acid (HONO) during the SHARP campaign
Because of the importance of HONO as a radical reservoir, consistent and accurate measurements of its concentration are needed. As part of SHARP (Study of Houston Atmospheric Radical Precursors), time series of HONO were obtained by six different measurement techniques on the roof of the Moody Tower at the University of Houston. Techniques used were long path differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS), stripping coil-visible absorption photometry (SC-AP), long path absorption photometry (LOPAPÂź ), mist chamber/ion chromatography (MC-IC), quantum cascade-tunable infrared laser differential absorption spectroscopy (QC-TILDAS), and ion drift-chemical ionization mass spectrometry (ID-CIMS). Various combinations of techniques were in operation from 15 April through 31 May 2009. All instruments recorded a similar diurnal pattern of HONO concentrations with higher median and mean values during the night than during the day. Highest values were observed in the final 2 weeks of the campaign. Inlets for the MC-IC, SC-AP, and QC-TILDAS were collocated and agreed most closely with each other based on several measures. Largest differences between pairs of measurements were evident during the day for concentrations ~100 parts per trillion (ppt). Above ~ 200 ppt, concentrations from the SC-AP, MC-IC, and QC-TILDAS converged to within about 20%, with slightly larger discrepancies when DOAS was considered. During the first 2 weeks, HONO measured by ID-CIMS agreed with these techniques, but ID-CIMS reported higher values during the afternoon and evening of the final 4 weeks, possibly from interference from unknown sources. Overview of Multi-kilowatt Free-Piston Stirling Power Conversion Research at GRC
As a step towards development of Stirling power conversion for potential use in Fission Surface Power (FSP) systems, a pair of commercially available 1 kW class free-piston Stirling convertors and a pair of commercially available pressure wave generators (which will be plumbed together to create a high power Stirling linear alternator test rig) have been procured for in-house testing at Glenn Research Center. Delivery of both the Stirling convertors and the linear alternator test rig is expected by October, 2007. The 1 kW class free-piston Stirling convertors will be tested at GRC to map and verify performance. The convertors will later be modified to operate with a NaK liquid metal pumped loop for thermal energy input. The high power linear alternator test rig will be used to map and verify high power Stirling linear alternator performance and to develop power management and distribution (PMAD) methods and techniques. This paper provides an overview of the multi-kilowatt free-piston Stirling power conversion work being performed at GRC
Comparative performance of some popular ANN algorithms on benchmark and function approximation problems
We report an inter-comparison of some popular algorithms within the
artificial neural network domain (viz., Local search algorithms, global search
algorithms, higher order algorithms and the hybrid algorithms) by applying them
to the standard benchmarking problems like the IRIS data, XOR/N-Bit parity and
Two Spiral. Apart from giving a brief description of these algorithms, the
results obtained for the above benchmark problems are presented in the paper.
The results suggest that while Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm yields the lowest
RMS error for the N-bit Parity and the Two Spiral problems, Higher Order
Neurons algorithm gives the best results for the IRIS data problem. The best
results for the XOR problem are obtained with the Neuro Fuzzy algorithm. The
above algorithms were also applied for solving several regression problems such
as cos(x) and a few special functions like the Gamma function, the
complimentary Error function and the upper tail cumulative
-distribution function. The results of these regression problems
indicate that, among all the ANN algorithms used in the present study,
Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm yields the best results. Keeping in view the
highly non-linear behaviour and the wide dynamic range of these functions, it
is suggested that these functions can be also considered as standard benchmark

Population dynamics of rhesus macaques and associated foamy virus in Bangladesh.
Foamy viruses are complex retroviruses that have been shown to be transmitted from nonhuman primates to humans. In Bangladesh, infection with simian foamy virus (SFV) is ubiquitous among rhesus macaques, which come into contact with humans in diverse locations and contexts throughout the country. We analyzed microsatellite DNA from 126 macaques at six sites in Bangladesh in order to characterize geographic patterns of macaque population structure. We also included in this study 38 macaques owned by nomadic people who train them to perform for audiences. PCR was used to analyze a portion of the proviral gag gene from all SFV-positive macaques, and multiple clones were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis was used to infer long-term patterns of viral transmission. Analyses of SFV gag gene sequences indicated that macaque populations from different areas harbor genetically distinct strains of SFV, suggesting that geographic features such as forest cover play a role in determining the dispersal of macaques and SFV. We also found evidence suggesting that humans traveling the region with performing macaques likely play a role in the translocation of macaques and SFV. Our studies found that individual animals can harbor more than one strain of SFV and that presence of more than one SFV strain is more common among older animals. Some macaques are infected with SFV that appears to be recombinant. These findings paint a more detailed picture of how geographic and sociocultural factors influence the spectrum of simian-borne retroviruses
UV emission and Star Formation in Stephan's Quintet
we present the first GALEX UV images of the well known interacting group of
galaxies, Stephan's Quintet (SQ). We detect widespread UV emission throughout
the group. However, there is no consistent coincidence between UV structure and
emission in the optical, H\alpha, or HI. Excluding the foreground galaxy
NGC7320 (Sd), most of the UV emission is found in regions associated with the
two spiral members of the group, NGC7319 and NGC7318b, and the intragroup
medium starburst SQ-A. The extinction corrected UV data are analyzed to
investigate the overall star formation activity in SQ. It is found that the
total star formation rate (SFR) of SQ is 6.69+-0.65 M_\sun/yr. Among this,
1.34+-0.16 M_sun/yr is due to SQ-A. This is in excellent agreement with that
derived from extinction corrected H\alpha luminosity of SQ-A. The SFR in
regions related to NGC 7319 is 1.98+-0.58 M_\sun/yr, most of which(68%) is
contributed by the disk. The contribution from the 'young tail' is only 15%. In
the UV, the 'young tail' is more extended (~100 kpc) and shows a loop-like
structure, including the optical tail, the extragalactic HII regions recently
discovered in H\alpha, and other UV emission regions discovered for the first
time. The UV and optical colors of the 'old tail' are consistent with a single
stellar population of age t ~10^{8.5+-0.4} yrs. The UV emission associated with
NGC 7318b is found in a very large (~80 kpc) disk, with a net SFR of 3.37+-0.25
M_sun/yr. Several large UV emission regions are 30 -- 40 kpc away from the
nucleus of NGC7318b. Although both NGC7319 and NGC7318b show peculiar UV
morphology, their SFR is consistent with that of normal Sbc galaxies,
indicating that the strength of star formation activity is not enhenced by
