Professional Selling: A Study of ECU College of Business Students

The purpose of this study is to understand East Carolina University College of Business students’ perceptions of sales as a career and to learn these students’ awareness and interest in the ECU Professional Selling Certificate. ECU’s College of Business offers a Professional Selling Certificate to students of any major. I hypothesized that many ECU students may not be aware of this certificate. My purpose in this project is to learn about student opinions of sales as a career and the Professional Selling Certificate offered by ECU. The questions that guided my project include “Are ECU College of Business students aware of the Professional Selling Certificate? and “Are these students interested in pursuing sales as a career? In order to answer these questions, I surveyed over 400 ECU College of Business students on their awareness of the Professional Selling Certificate (PSC, from here) and their perceptions of sales as a career. The results show that just over half of students surveyed (54.8%) are aware of the PSC. Just under half of students surveyed (45%) have an interest in pursuing sales as a long-term career, while many more would be willing to begin their career in sales regardless of long-term plans (56.9%). Conclusions drawn from this research include that ECU College of Business students believe that their programs prepare them for a career in sales. Marketing majors specifically show greater interest in sales careers than other majors, followed by management majors

REGIONAL COST SHARE NECESSARY FOR RANCHER PARTICIPATION IN BRUSH CONTROL

    Get PDF
Large-scale brush-control programs are being proposed in Texas to increase off-site water yields. Biophysical and economic simulation models are combined to estimate the effects of brush control on representative ranches in four ecological regions of the Edwards Plateau area of Texas. Net present values of representative ranches in three of four regions decrease with brush control. Cost shares necessary for ranches from the three regions to break even range from 7% to 31% of total brush-control costs. Any large-scale brush-control program will therefore require a substantial investment by the state of Texas.Agribusiness,

Electronic Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Atomic Forces, Vibrations, and Anharmonicities

    Get PDF
Atomic forces are calculated for first-row monohydrides and carbon monoxide within electronic quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). Accurate and efficient forces are achieved by using an improved method for moving variational parameters in variational QMC. Newton's method with singular value decomposition (SVD) is combined with steepest descent (SD) updates along directions rejected by the SVD, after initial SD steps. Dissociation energies in variational and diffusion QMC agree well with experiment. The atomic forces agree quantitatively with potential energy surfaces, demonstrating the accuracy of this force procedure. The harmonic vibrational frequencies and anharmonicity constants, derived from the QMC energies and atomic forces, also agree well with experimental values.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; updated conten

    K2-231 b: A sub-Neptune exoplanet transiting a solar twin in Ruprecht 147

We identify a sub-Neptune exoplanet (Rp=2.5±0.2R_p = 2.5 \pm 0.2 R_\oplus) transiting a solar twin in the Ruprecht 147 star cluster (3 Gyr, 300 pc, [Fe/H] = +0.1 dex). The ~81 day light curve for EPIC 219800881 (V = 12.71) from K2 Campaign 7 shows six transits with a period of 13.84 days, a depth of ~0.06%, and a duration of ~4 hours. Based on our analysis of high-resolution MIKE spectra, broadband optical and NIR photometry, the cluster parallax and interstellar reddening, and isochrone models from PARSEC, Dartmouth, and MIST, we estimate the following properties for the host star: M=1.01±0.03M_\star = 1.01 \pm 0.03 M_\odot, R=0.95±0.03R_\star= 0.95 \pm 0.03 R_\odot, and Teff=5695±50T_{\rm eff} = 5695 \pm 50 K. This star appears to be single, based on our modeling of the photometry, the low radial velocity variability measured over nearly ten years, and Keck/NIRC2 adaptive optics imaging and aperture-masking interferometry. Applying a probabilistic mass-radius relation, we estimate that the mass of this planet is Mp=7+53M_p = 7 +5 -3 M_\oplus, which would cause a RV semi-amplitude of K=2±1K = 2 \pm 1 m s1^{-1} that may be measurable with existing precise RV facilities. After statistically validating this planet with BLENDER, we now designate it K2-231 b, making it the second sub-stellar object to be discovered in Ruprecht 147 and the first planet; it joins the small but growing ranks of 23 other planets found in open clusters.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, light curve included as separate fil

The Alpha-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone Induces Conversion of Effector T Cells into Treg Cells

The neuropeptide alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) has an important role in modulating immunity and homeostasis. The production of IFN-γ by effector T cells is suppressed by α-MSH, while TGF-β production is promoted in the same cells. Such α-MSH-treated T cells have immune regulatory activity and suppress hypersensitivity, autoimmune diseases, and graft rejection. Previous characterizations of the α-MSH-induced Treg cells showed that the cells are CD4+ T cells expressing the same levels of CD25 as effector T cells. Therefore, we further analyzed the α-MSH-induced Treg cells for expression of effector and regulatory T-cell markers. Also, we examined the potential for α-MSH-induced Treg cells to be from the effector T-cell population. We found that the α-MSH-induced Treg cells are CD25+  CD4+ T cells that share similar surface markers as effector T cells, except that they express on their surface LAP. Also, the α-MSH treatment augments FoxP3 message in the effector T cells, and α-MSH induction of regulatory activity was limited to the effector CD25+ T-cell population. Therefore, α-MSH converts effector T cells into Treg cells, which suppress immunity targeting specific antigens and tissues

Multiple sclerosis presenting with homonymous hemianopia

Ophthalmic manifestations are a prominent feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). Optic neuritis accounts for 18% of initial MS symptoms and 40–70% of all patients with MS have at least one episode of optic neuritis during their disease course. Eye movement abnormalities such as internuclear ophthalmoplegia are seen in over 50% of patients with MS. This case study describes a rare initial presentation of MS with ‘left eye blurred vision’ and examination findings of a complete left homonymous hemianopia. Although homonymous hemianopia is uncommon (0.5–3.5% of MS cases), this case highlights an important reminder that people with a field defect often complain of ‘blurred vision’ on the side of the defect
