    Get PDF
Found in Translation is at once a themed volume on the translation of ancient Jewish texts and a Festschrift for Leonard J. Greenspoon, the Philip M. and Ethel Klutznick Professor in Jewish Civilization and professor of classical and near Eastern studies and of theology at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Greenspoon has made significant contributions to the study of Jewish biblical translations, particularly the ancient translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek, known as the Septuagint. This volume comprises an internationally renowned group of scholars presenting a wide range of original essays on Bible translation, the influence of culture on biblical translation, Bible translations’ reciprocal influence on culture, and the translation of various Jewish texts and collections, especially the Septuagint. Volume editors have painstakingly planned Found in Translation to have the broadest scope of any current work on Jewish biblical translation to reflect Greenspoon’s broad impact on the field throughout an august career.https://docs.lib.purdue.edu/purduepress_previews/1009/thumbnail.jp

AbstractRegionalism and constitutional reform, 1819-1826.The topic of this article is four projects of a territorial restructuring of the Russian empire along regional lines : those of Novosiltsev, Speranskii, and two Decembrists : Muravev and Pestel. These projects are used to demonstrate that political regionalism went much further than the 1816 project discussed in a previous article and the timid attempt made in the 1820s to create a regional administration in the whole empire. It also shows how unrealistic they were, except for one, that of Speranskii, which took effect in Siberia. This third article 1 ends with an analysis of the difficulties encountered by imperial administrators in their effort to reconcile concentrated with deconcentrated administration, and hints at the problem which Vladimir Putin will face in his attempts to create a new regional administration in the Russian Federation

Russia's eastern theater, 1650-1850 springboard or strategic backyard ?

AbstractRussian strategy in the eastern theater evolved during the period under consideration. It was at first offensive in Siberia, until Russia encountered the resistance of the Manchu dynasty and was forced to retreat to a defensive posture. Then it became offensive in the middle or Bashkirian sector, where the Russians eliminated the Bashkir danger to their possessions in the Urals and created a new military headquarters in Orenburg. By the end of the eighteenth century, Russian strategy began to focus on the Caucasus, as the Russian advance across the mountains aroused the fierce resistance of the highlanders. From that time on until the l850s, very large forces were committed to crushing the uprising led by Shamil. But beginning in the l860s Russian strategy would again focus on the Chinese sector and a combined assault from the Caucasus, Orenburg and western Siberia would result in the conquest of Central Asia

This study has two objectives; the first objective was to assess the ability to utilize time-lapse video technology to color score the longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle. The second objective was to determine the point in retail display consumers expect a discount or stop purchasing USDA low-Choice strip steaks. 8 USDA Choice strip loins were aged for 14 and 28 d postmortem. The loins were cut into steaks and placed in retail display under time-lapse video surveillance. A 7-member trained panel evaluated the 14 d aged steaks both in-person and on video footage for visual color, surface discoloration, and overall acceptability using a hedonic scale. The GLIMMIX Procedure of SAS was used to determine the least-square means of the color score results on each day, while the CORR procedure determined the correlation between in-person and video color scores. The correlation coefficient was r²= 0.99 between in-person and video color scoring for all parameters. Three videos were selected from the steaks aged 28 d and placed into a consumer survey which was distributed via email and social media. The survey was taken by 1,080 participants and consisted of two sections, a demographics section and a video section (three videos). Respondents were asked to determine at which point they would expect a discount or stop purchasing the products in the videos. The GLIMMIX Procedure of SAS was used to determine the least square means of the main effect (video). There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between the responses to the three videos. However, on average the respondents stated they would expect a discount between 100-107 h of retail display and stop purchasing between 132-139 h of retail display. In conclusion, video color scoring could serve as a vital tool for researchers to determine the acceptability of beef products at every hour of retail display

    Russian governors general, 1775-1825

L’article conclut que la centralisation a fini par prévaloir, comme cela avait toujours été le cas chaque fois que l’idée de région était soulevée parmi l’élite dirigeante de l’empire.ABSTRACTThe administration of the Russian empire has oscillated during the past hundred years between centralization and regional decentralization, the latter without much success. Nevertheless, a study of Russian regionalism provides interesting insights into attitudes among the elite about the best methods to administer an enormous space from one center. This article claims that a rewarding approach to this problem is to contrast territorial with functional administration. By territorial administration is meant one in which the regional or provincial authority manages all the sectors while functional administration relegates that authority to a role of surveillance and subordinates all local sectors of administration to their central headquarters. This article begins with a survey of the regional idea between 1708 and 1825, and continues with an examination of the powers of a governor general during Catherine’s reign and his relations with the central government, with an emphasis on his powers of appointment, the confirmation of judicial decisions, and the extent of his financial authority. It concludes with an examination of the ministerial reform during Alexander’s reign, the creation of various types of regional authorities, and the attempt to create uniform regions across the whole empire after 1815. It concludes that centralization prevailed in the end, as it always had whenever the idea of a region was raised among the ruling elite of the empire

Anyone familiar with the author’s first book Where two worlds met (1992) must look forward to reading this new volume, which is a comprehensive study of Moscow’s relations with the steppe nomads from the emergence of a Russian empire until the closing of the frontier 300 years later. He will not be disappointed. In the author’s own words, this book is about the transformation of a dangerous frontier into a part of the empire and of its peoples into subjects. Certainly more controversial is hi..
