A note on many valued quantum computational logics
The standard theory of quantum computation relies on the idea that the basic
information quantity is represented by a superposition of elements of the
canonical basis and the notion of probability naturally follows from the Born
rule. In this work we consider three valued quantum computational logics. More
specifically, we will focus on the Hilbert space C^3, we discuss extensions of
several gates to this space and, using the notion of effect probability, we
provide a characterization of its states.Comment: Pages 15, Soft Computing, 201
Follicular size affects the meiotic competence of in vitro matured prepubertal and adult oocytes in sheep
Non-atretic follicles dissected from prepubertal and adult ovaries were allocated in three groups: a) < 1 mm; b) 1-2 mm; c) > 2 mm. After 24 h of maturation, a lower percentage of adult oocytes from group a (P < 0.01) reached metaphase II than those from groups b and c (70.4 versus 89.5 and 95.5). Prepubertal oocytes showed similar results (P < 0.01; 27.2 versus 79.8 and 81.8). There was a significant difference (P < 0.01) in meiotic progression between prepubertal and adult oocytes of < 1 mm follicles. The diameter of prepubertal oocytes derived from group a was significantly lower (P < 0.01) compared to groups b and c (138.1 versus 142.1 and 145.6); adult oocytes showed similar results (P < 0.01; 142.2 versus 157.2 and 158.1 Oocytes with the same diameter derived from different follicles of prepubertal and adult ovaries showed similar meiotic progression rates.
Suppression of von K\'arm\'an vortex streets past porous rectangular cylinders
Although the stability properties of the wake past impervious bluff bodies
have been widely examined in the literature, similar analyses regarding the
flow around and through porous ones are still lacking. In this work, the effect
of the porosity and permeability on the wake patterns of porous rectangular
cylinders is numerically investigated at low to moderate Reynolds numbers in
the framework of direct numerical simulation combined with local and global
stability analyses. A modified Darcy-Brinkman formulation is employed here so
as to describe the flow behavior inside the porous media, where also the
convective terms are retained to correctly account for the inertial effects at
high values of permeability. Different aspect ratios of the cylinder are
considered, varying the thickness-to-height ratios, t/d, from 0.01 (flat plate)
to 1.0 (square cylinder). The results show that the permeability of the bodies
has a strong effect in modifying the characteristics of the wakes and of the
associated flow instabilities, while the porosity weakly affects the resulting
flow patterns. In particular, the fluid flows through the porous bodies and,
thus, as the permeability is progressively increased, the recirculation
regions, initially attached to the rear part of the bodies, at first detach
from the body and, eventually, disappear even in the near wakes. Global
stability analyses lead to the identification of critical values of the
permeability above which any linear instability is prevented. Moreover, a
different scaling of the non-dimensional permeability allows to identify a
general threshold for all the configurations here studied that ensures the
suppression of vortex shedding, at least in the considered parameter space.Comment: 31 pages and 17 figure

This paper explores the presence of Virgil in Dante's Vita nova and Convivio. While the Latin poet plays a fundamental role in the Commedia, he occupies a markedly less exceptional position in these earlier works, despite respectful references to his mastery of poetic style. A shift occurs in the Convivio's fourth book, which accords special importance to the figure of Aeneas and to the catabasis that will become a decisive source of inspiration for the Commedia. In Convivio IV, moreover, Virgilian references are fundamental to Dante's presentation of his new intuition that Providence authorized the foundation of the Roman empire by a divinely-elected people. Only after this decisive "Virgilian turn" does it become possible for Dante to imagine an imperial poem, with Virgil acting as guide for its protagonist along a journey through the afterworld.
Documenting and modeling the accretion of surface and subsoil organic carbon in agricultural Inceptisols reclaimed from Mediterranean sea marshes in Sardinia
High input agriculture in productive Inceptisols that were reclaimed from sea marshes offers an opportunity to study the increase of soil organic carbon (SOC) in soils with originally low SOC. We documented the current SOC content and its distribution with depth for several soil profiles
The research was carried out using an 8 coltural units lisimetric equipment for hydroponic crops. During 1995, two
treatments on maize Vitrex 200 hybrid were carried out in the open air. One treatment was subjected to supplementary wind by fans, able to generate a 4 m s-1 speed air flux. The second treatment was protected from wind, resulting in anemometric calm conditions during the entire vegetative cycle of mais. The water losses by transpiration were daily or periodically collected on each coltural unit using a Mariot principles meter. The evaporative water losses were eliminated by covering the substrate with a plastic film. The results show a dwarfing effect of the wind. The height of the plants subjected to supplementary wind was significantly reduced by 35 cm and the grain yield was significantly reduced from 162 to 147 g per plant; the transpiration rate per unit leaf area (TAF) was resulted higher: 2.82 vs 2.50 mm d-1; at the same time, the transpired water use efficiency (TWUE) was lower: 2.38 g of dry grain per 1000 g of transpired water vs 2.68 g collected on the wind protected treatment.
I risultati
Production and lambing rate of blastocysts derived from in vitro matured oocytes after gonadotropin treatment of prepubertal ewes
The aim of this study was to evaluate
the effect of gonadotropin treatment on the in vitro
maturation, blastocyst production, and developmental
potential to term of oocytes collected from Sardinian
neonatal and prepubertal ewes at 4 to 6 wk of age.
Cumulus-oocyte complexes were recovered at 24 h
after withdrawal of a 1/6th size progestagenated
pessary from the donors, of which each received 120
IU FSH/LH and 400 IU PMSG in a single dose 36 h
before sponge removal. Treated donors produced a
greater ( P < .01) number of oocytes per animal (86.2
± 7.9) compared with slaughterhouse (untreated)
prepubertal ewes (55.5 ± 6.1) of the same age or with
treated neonatal ewes (6.1 ± 0.7) 10 d old. During
oocyte maturation, there were no differences in the
percentage of germinal vesicle break-down (78.08 vs
74.24), metaphase I (89.13 vs 87.18), and metaphase
II (77.91 vs 76.38) when evaluated after 8, 14, and 24
h of maturation, respectively, between oocytes from
treated and slaughterhouse (untreated) prepubertal
ewes. The embryo cleavage (71.1 vs 73.7) and
blastocyst rates (22.2 vs 19.8) were similar in the
treated and the untreated prepubertal ewes after
transfer of in vitro matured oocytes into ligated
oviducts of temporary recipients. The in vitro viability
rates of vitrified blastocysts (81.2 vs 76.9) and the in
vivo survival rates (46.1 vs 50.0) of embryos derived
from in vitro matured and in vivo fertilized oocytes
showed no difference. The data suggest that
gonadotropin treatment increases oocyte production
per animal but has no effect on oocyte quality because
embryo production and lambing rates of blastocysts
derived from in vitro matured oocytes were not
markedly different from those derived from untreated
prepubertal ewes of the same age
