L’epistemologia del sentimentalismo etico

The paper exposes a peculiar sentimentalistic view on moral judgments: an explanation of moral life following the suggestions of David Hume in his “science of human nature”. The characteristic point of the humean sentimentalism is the admission of a differentiation between the original emotions, directly perceived, and the reflex sentiments expressed in the moral judgments. This differentiation is not admitted in emotivism and in extreme sentimentalism of some kinds of naïve expressivism. The essay defends the merit of this epistemological sentimentalism specially as a way for the justification of the moral choices and evaluations in opposition with ethical rationalism. Hume’s pages offer many suggestions on the specific passages of a sentimentalistic check of the acceptability of a moral judgment. The article is a systematic attempt of reconstruction of this passages as a contribution to the contemporary discussion on meta-ethics

In this brief review it is not possible to do full justice to this lively and lucidly presented study. It is fair to say, I think, that the considerable merits of this work rest primarily with its intelligent and reliable selection of material, most of which is already available and familiar. This study does not aim to challenge any orthodoxies or present new material of some significant kind. Rasmussen does not need to do this since his real concern is to tell a story about two great thinkers in an engaging manner – a task which he achieves with great success. This is a book that scholars will thoroughly enjoy and appreciate and which will also find many appreciative readers well beyond these boundaries

The text offers an exposition and positive evaluation of the central developments in Canale’s book. In particular, in the first part a reconstruction is proposed, describing different articulations of a normative meta-ethics. In the second part a fruitful utilization of this meta-ethics is deployed so to give a critical reading of the arguments of the judges for the solution of some important contempo-rary practical conflicts. In the last part, the paper offers some questions on the implications of a normative meta-ethics from the point of view of a naturalistic sentimentalism
