In this study a descriptive analysis is made of selected, limitations on the organization of treatment at Louisiana State Penitentiary within the past approximate decade. Since it is concerned with a \u27modern\u27 prison, the study is applicable to most contemporary American prisons undergoing any phase of the transition from objectives of custody and production to that of treatment orientation. The study presents (1) a brief historical progression of the \u27old\u27 system in Louisiana, making a cursory analysis of the ideology, structure, and method of operation of that penal structure at Angola prior to the 1951-52 prison \u27riot\u27; (2) a survey of the nature of that \u27riot\u27 or pervasive force, revealing the results of that upheaval as having necessitated sudden and abrupt change which did not fulfill the needs of that institution; (3) a selective description of some theoretical limitations that were inherent in the American prison system in its evolution and which became a part of the \u27new\u27 system, and; (4) a cursory analysis of certain inherent and inbred limitations of the \u27treatment program\u27 at Angola within the past approximate decade. In the way of final conclusion, this study implies that the \u27new\u27 system at Angola has failed as a result of limitations placed upon it. Issue is then taken with those concepts held by progressive penologists concerning the evolution of criminal behavior and the future role of treatment in prison. Finally, a brief proposal is advanced for a more realistic prison structure within the correctional process as a whole

Tv-RIO1 – an atypical protein kinase from the parasitic nematode Trichostrongylus vitrinus

Background: Protein kinases are key enzymes that regulate a wide range of cellular processes, including cell-cycle progression, transcription, DNA replication and metabolic functions. These enzymes catalyse the transfer of phosphates to serine, threonine and tyrosine residues, thus playing functional roles in reversible protein phosphorylation. There are two main groups, namely eukaryotic protein kinases (ePKs) and atypical protein kinases (aPKs); RIO kinases belong to the latter group. While there is some information about RIO kinases and their roles in animals, nothing is known about them in parasites. This is the first study to characterise a RIO1 kinase from any parasite. Results: A full-length cDNA (Tv-rio-1) encoding a RIO1 protein kinase (Tv-RIO1) was isolated from the economically important parasitic nematode Trichostrongylus vitrinus (Order Strongylida). The uninterrupted open reading frame (ORF) of 1476 nucleotides encoded a protein of 491 amino acids, containing the characteristic RIO1 motif LVHADLSEYNTL. Tv-rio-1 was transcribed at the highest level in the third-stage larva (L3), and a higher level in adult females than in males. Comparison with homologues from other organisms showed that protein Tv-RIO1 had significant homology to related proteins from a range of metazoans and plants. Amino acid sequence identity was most pronounced in the ATP-binding motif, active site and metal binding loop. Phylogenetic analyses of selected amino acid sequence data revealed Tv-RIO1 to be most closely related to the proteins in the species of Caenorhabditis. A structural model of Tv-RIO1 was constructed and compared with the published crystal structure of RIO1 of Archaeoglobus fulgidus (Af-Rio1). Conclusion: This study provides the first insights into the RIO1 protein kinases of nematodes, and a foundation for further investigations into the biochemical and functional roles of this molecule in biological processes in parasitic nematodes

Student Perceptions of Rules for Classroom Interaction

ABSTRACT Burgoon’s expectancy violation model posits that nonverbal rule violations will be evaluated according to the perceptions toward the violator and the behavior itself. However, the violator may have perceptions regarding the appropriateness of the rule. This study measured the perceptions of high school students regarding the rules for classroom interaction. It is believed that the rules for classroom interaction are rules which have been learned through the process of socialization and enculturation into the classroom setting throughout students’ careers. These rules should be well known by all students by the time they reach tenth grade, the grade being investigated. A survey questionnaire was developed through a pilot study, and was distributed to 244 students through the English classes of three East Baton Rouge parish high schools. The high schools were chosen by relative drop out rate. Students were grouped by sex, race and age to measure differences in attitude by characteristics of potential dropouts. The study found that males have more negative attitudes toward compliance with laziness rules and the importance of those laziness rules than females. The study also found that Black students have a more positive attitudes regarding the importance of distraction, laziness, and respectfulness rules than non-Black students. Implications regarding the attitudes toward classroom rules are discussed

Peut-on mettre en place une gestion locale habilitante alors que le service à la clientèle demeure la raison d’être de l’entreprise ?The Office municipal d’habitation de Montréal (OMHM, or Montreal Municipal Housing Office) manages the stock of low-income housing on the island of Montreal and, in this capacity, is the largest public rental housing agency in Quebec. In recent years, the OMHM’s “new focus on tenants” has taken the form of shared governance aimed at involving tenants in major renovation projects that are under way. We consider what committed stakeholders (managers, tenants, administrators) have to say in our analysis of this new form of governance and in identifying its strengths, paradoxes and limitations. Is it possible to set up a form of empowering local management when customer service remains the agency’s raison d’être
