    Modelling and Experimental Validation of a VNT Turbocharger for Improving Performances of a Marine Diesel Generator Engine

    This paper presents modelling and experimental validation for improving the performances of a marine diesel generator engine. Based on the diesel engine theory, the laws of conservation of energy, and the principle of movement of flow through turbocharger nozzle, a mathematical model of a real turbocharged engine was built, concentrating on the mathematic model of flow through nozzles. This model is simulated by Matlab/Simulink program, the results of simulation showed the relationships between the engine and the turbocharger, the turbine and the compressor, and between the nozzles and the turbocharger. The experiments were carried out to validate this model, the errors between the simulation and measure were acceptable. The measure and simulation results also determined that at the low load conditions (≤50% load) engine performances can be improved by adjusting nozzle opening degree (from fully opening to 90% and 80% opening)

    Prophylactic Central Neck Dissection to Improve Disease-Free Survival in Pediatric Papillary Thyroid Cancer

    BackgroundPediatric PTC is a rare disease. Although, the prognosis is excellent and the mortality rate is low, the role of prophylactic central neck dissection is still the subject of debate. The aim was to evaluate both the role and safety of prophylactic central neck dissection (CND) in managing pediatric papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), especially in respect of disease-free survival (DFS).Patients and MethodsIn this retrospective study, we collected 54 pediatric cN0 PTC patients (≤ 18 years of age) who were treated from January 2014 to January 2021 at a high-volume thyroid surgery center. Patients were divided into two groups based on the status of prophylactic CND. We analyzed the factors related to the clinicopathological features and recurrence of PTC in children.ResultsOf the 54 cN0 patients, 35 underwent prophylactic CND and 19 patients did not undergo prophylactic CND. The two groups were similar in clinical and pathologic features, such as age, gender, tumor size, multifocal status, and follow-up time. The average DFS was 84.4 ± 2.7 months. Log-rank tests on Kaplan-Meier curves revealed that age, gender, tumor size, multifocality, and extrathyroid extension did not relate to DFS time. Furthermore, DFS time was not affected by the extent of thyroidectomy (p=0.07) or RAI treatment (p=0.21). Prophylactic CND was found to increase DFS time for pediatric patients with cN0 PTC (p = 0.003). There was no statistically significant difference in complications such as transient hypocalcemia (p=0.15) and transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (p=0.37) between the prophylactic CND group and the no-prophylactic CND group.ConclusionProphylactic CND was found to be associated with increased DFS and not with increased rates of complications after surgery

    Description of Geocenamus vietnamensis sp. n. (Nematoda : Merliniidae) from Vietnam

    A new species of the genus Geocenamus was isolated from soil and root samples from the rhizosphere of Casuarina equisetifolia (Casuarinaceae) in Quang Nam province, Vietnam. This species is characterized by a round-to-hexagonal labial disc, the presence of a labial region, which is continuous or slightly offset from the body with six sectors, lateral sectors of first labial annulus being smaller than the submedian sectors, the presence of six to seven labial annules; the absence of deirids; stylet length 24 to 28 mu m long, body length 776 to 979 mu m long; lateral field with six to eight lateral lines, without areolation at mid-body and with areolation in outer bands at the tail region and a pointed tail terminus. Geocenamus vietnamensis n. sp. most closely resembles G. boghiae in having a non-sclerotized head framework and lacking a bursa in the males. It can be clearly distinguished from all other species of the genus Geocenamus by these characteristics. The combination of morphology, morphometric features, and phylogenetic trees, based on D2-D3 of 28S and ITS rDNA sequences, showed that this new species can be clearly separated from all other sequenced species. This record is the first for Geocenamus in Vietnam

    Isolation and identification of phenolic compounds from the leaf extract of Cassia alata L.

    Cassia alata is one of the most important species of the genus Cassia which is rich in anthraquinones and polyphenols. This plant is used as a medicinal material of which the leaves are known to have laxative and antibiotic properties. In our study, the methanol leaf extract of C. alata showed a significant antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria strains Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. The organic layers such as n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and aqueous layers, were prepared by partitioning the methanol extract with n-hexane and ethyl acetate successively.  We successfully isolated and identified the structures of five compounds from C. alata leaves. Their structures were elucidated by MS and NMR spectroscopic methods as well as comparison with literature data. These compounds were determined to be methyl 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoate (1), kaempferol (2), (-)epiafzelechin (3), kaempferol-3-O-glucoside (4) and kaempferol-3-O-gentiobioside (5). Keywords.     Morphological and molecular characteristics of Pratylenchus haiduongensis sp. n., a new species of root-lesion nematodes associated with carrot in Vietnam

    Pratylenchus haiduongensis sp. n. is described as associated with carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus (Hoffm.) Schubl. & G. Martens) in Hai Duong Province, Vietnam. P. haiduongensis sp. n. is characterized by the lip region with three annuli and slightly separated from the body. Stylet knobs are rounded (never indented anteriorly). The lateral field includes four incisures, bearing areolation at the pharynx region and tail region and occasionally appears in the vulval region. Sometimes the appearances of oblique broken striaes divide the lateral field into five or six incisures. The ovary is distinct with one row of oocytes. Spermatheca is oval in shape with round central cavity, without sperm or reduced in some specimens. The postvuval uterine sac is long surpassing the vulva body diameter by 2 to 2.5 times (PUS = 31 to 65 mm). High vulva position with V = 66 to 75%. The tail shape can be subhemispherical with a smooth, slightly indented, broadly smooth, or cleft terminus observed in some specimens. The matrix code of P. haiduongensis sp. n. is: A2, B1, C4, D(1,3), E1, F(5,6), G(1,2), H(1,4); I(1,2,3,4), J1, K(1,2) according to Castillo and Vovlas (2007). The LSU-D2D3 segment and the ITS-rDNA region of this species were amplified and sequenced. The morphological characters and molecular phylogenetic analyses confirmed that this is a new species of the genus Pratylenchus in Vietnam

    Preparation of antibacterial polypropylene grafted acrylic acid and immobilized silver nanoparticles by γ-irradiation method

    Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are now being widely used as antibacterial agents due to their strong bactericidal properties and low toxicity on mammalian cells. In this study, γ-rays irradiation method was used to synthesize AgNPs from silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution and to graft acrylic acid (AAc) onto porous polypropylene (PP). Porous PP grafted with AAc (PP-g-AAc) was then immobilized with AgNPs for preparing the antimicrobial materials (PP-g-AAc/AgNPs). The results demonstrated that the grafting yield of AAc onto PP increased by the increasing of irradiation dose as well as AAc concentration. The PP-g-AAc samples with grafting degrees from 1.2 to 29.8% were immobilized with AgNPs (d ~ 10 nm, 500 ppm) to obtain antimicrobial properties. The immobilized Ag contents were from 132 to 392 ppm and corresponded to the PP-g-AAc samples at grafting degrees from 1.2 to 29.8%. The in vitro antibacterial properties of PP-g-AAc/AgNPs materials on E. coli were evaluated and the results indicated that the bactericidal efficiency (η) increased by the increase of Ag contents in the tested materials. The germicidal activities against E. coli of PP-g-AAc/AgNPs containing 363 ppm Ag were found to be nearly 100% after treating in 30 min. In addition, the inhibition zone of this PP-g-AAc/AgNPs on E. coli was also found up to 28 mm in diameter. Thus, γ-rays radiation demonstrated a strong capability in grafting functional groups (AAc) onto porous PP. Furthermore, the porous PP grafted with AAc and immobilized with AgNPs might potentially be used for elimination of bacteria in water filtering
