Interpreting in refugee contexts. A descriptive and qualitative study
Interpreting in refugee contexts (IRC) has long been invisible to Western societies andInterpreting Studies. This paper aims at desc ribing the background and features of IRC, andpresents a small-scale qualitative study, whose main objectives are: exploring interpreters’perception regarding competences and role, and exploring refugees’ perception regardingthe quality of the interpreting service. For this purpose, a focus group and unstructuredinterviews were conducted in Spain. Data were analysed through comparative analysis andcoding procedures. Results show interpreters’ dissatisfaction with their working condi-tions and refugees’ experience with interpretation seems to be negative and frustrating.Further research in this area is needed in order to raise awareness of commun ication andintegration difficulties of refugees
Interpreting in a Refugee Context: Assessment by the Agents Involved
This paper focuses on the assessment of the current state of interpreting in different fields throughout all the asylum process in Spain. Here we share the results of a field research based on quantitative and qualitative surveys delivered to the agents involved in interpreting for refugees: asylum seekers and refugees, service providers and relevant officials, and the interpreters themselves. In our research we have verified the lack of attention paid to this area of interpreting, both from public services and from the academic and scientific community. The results show that, in general, the service is considered necessary, and that more funds and training for interpreters is needed. Taking into account that movement of refugees is a current topic, this area should receive far more attention
A didactic experience in digital storytelling with the students of Taller de Comunicación en Lengua B
New technologies are an important part of everybody’s lives and the
university has to respond to this situation. Teachers need to be updated with the latest technologies so that they can find and create attractive activities to promote
engagement and interest among the new generation of students. Web 2.0 technology is a great tool to motivate students to produce quality work in a foreign language. Digital storytelling is a fantastic tool to promote students’ creativity and eagerness to improve their foreign language skills. Through digital storytelling students learn to combine basic multimedia tools (e.g. Audacity and Windows Movie Maker) with writing, narrating, etc. In this paper I will share a didactic experience that I recently put into practise with second-year undergraduate students of English as a B language at the Universidad Europea de Madrid – Centro Adscrito de Valencia.SIN FINANCIACIÓNNo data 2012UE

utilidad percibida e intenciones futuras.SIN FINANCIACIÓNNo data 2014UE
Support and Emotional Well-Being of Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Spain
Although the world’s forcibly displaced population reached 79.5 million in 2019, their difficult situations and the issues they struggle with remain practically invisible in Spanish society. Therefore, it seems necessary to provide greater insight into an invisible reality to improve the refugees’ situation. The present cross-sectional study aims to draw a general profile of refugees’ and asylum seekers’ main characteristics in Spain and their well-being. A total of 186 refugees living in Spain participated. An ad-hoc questionnaire was administered to obtain data regarding sociodemographic profile, language skills, and social and institutional support. A standardized instrument, SPANE, was used to measure well-being. It can be seen that healthcare, followed by legal aid, are the easiest to access. On the other hand, finding a job, having money, and finding housing are the most difficult. In general, it seems possible to say that the refugees present more positive feelings than negative ones, which implies a positive emotional balance, although the average score obtained for emotional balance is quite far from the highest possible score. We consider this to be a pivotal first step which can provide useful information for the further design of aid strategies to improve this vulnerable group’s situation.2014/UEM253.390 JCR (2020) Q1, 41/176 Public, Environmental & Occupational Health0.747 SJR (2020) Q2, 50/136 Health, Toxicology and MutagenesisNo data IDR 2019UE
The role of perceived performance and disconfirmation for increasing skype-based e-learnning system loyalty
This research aims to fill the gap in the academic literature by focusing on the utilitarian antecedents of Skype-based applications loyalty. To achieve this goal, we analyze the potential effect of perceived performance and confirmation on students’ satisfaction and loyalty to the Skype-based e-learning tool. The role of perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness as antecedents of perceived performance and confirmation is also analyzed. We test our proposed model using the path analysis of data collected from an experiment where 43 undergraduate students from USA and Spain worked in pairs using Skype to improve their language and intercultural communication skills. Results show that utilitarian features of Skype-based e-learning tools play an important role in enhancing students’ performance and loyalty. Practical applications and managerial implications of using Skype-based e-learning to enhance learning interest and perceived performance are discussed. No data (2013)UE
