Killings, Duality and Characteristic Polynomials
In this paper the complete geometrical setting of (lowest order) abelian
T-duality is explored with the help of some new geometrical tools (the reduced
formalism). In particular, all invariant polynomials (the integrands of the
characteristic classes) can be explicitly computed for the dual model in terms
of quantities pertaining to the original one and with the help of the canonical
connection whose intrinsic characterization is given. Using our formalism the
physically, and T-duality invariant, relevant result that top forms are zero
when there is an isometry without fixed points is easily proved.Comment: 14 pages, Late
Generation of atom-atom correlations inside and outside the mutual light cone
We analyze whether a pair of neutral two level atoms can become entangled in
a finite time while they remain causally disconnected. The interaction with the
e. m. field is treated perturbatively in the electric dipole approximation. We
start from an initial vacuum state and obtain the final atomic correlations for
the cases where n = 0, 1, or 2 photons are produced in a time t, and also when
the final field state is unknown. Our results show that correlations are
sizable inside and outside the mutual light cone for n= 1 and 2, and also that
quantum correlations become classical by tracing over the field state. For n =
0 we obtain entanglement generation by photon propagation between the atoms,
the correlations come from the indistinguishability of the source for n = 1,
and may give rise to entanglement swapping for n = 2.Comment: v2: Minor changes, references added. v3: full revision, appendix

Increase in pertussis cases along with high prevalence of two emerging genotypes of Bordetella pertussis in Perú, 2012
As has occurred in many regions worldwide, in 2012 the incidence of pertussis increased in Perú. This epidemiologic situation has been associated with a waning vaccine-induced immunity and the adaptation of Bordetella pertussis to vaccine-induced immunity along with improved diagnostic methods. Methods: The study comprised a total of 840 pertussis-suspected cases reported in Perú during 2012. We summarize here the distribution of pertussis cases according to age and immunization status along with the immunization-coverage rate. Laboratory diagnosis was performed by culture test and real-time polymerase-chain reaction (PCR). B. pertussis bacteria recovered from infected patients were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and the DNA sequencing of the pertussis-toxin (promoter and subunit A), pertactin, and fimbriae (fim2 and fim3) genes. Results: From the total pertussis-suspected cases, 191 (22.7 %) infections were confirmed by real-time PCR and 18 through cultivation of B. pertussis (2.1 %), while one infection of B. parapertussis (0.11 %) was also detected by culture. Pertussis was significantly higher in patients that had had 0-3 vaccine doses (pentavalent vaccine alone) than in those who had had 4-5 vaccine doses (pentavalent plus DwPT boosters) at 94.3 vs. 5.7 %, respectively (p < 0.00001). The relative risk (RR) for patients with 4-5 doses compared to those with fewer than 4 doses or no dose was 0.23 (95 % Confidence Interval: 0.11-0.44), while the vaccine effectiveness was 77 % and coverage 50.5 %. Genetic analysis of B. pertussis isolates from different Peruvian regions detected two clonal groups as identified by PFGE. Those two groups corresponded to the B. pertussis genotypes emerging worldwide ptxP3-ptxA1-prn2 or 9-fim3-1 and ptxP3-ptxA1-prn2 or 9-fim3-2. Conclusions: Two emerging B. pertussis genotypes similar to isolates involved in worldwide epidemics were detected in Perú. Low vaccine coverage (<50 %) and genetic divergence between the vaccine-producing strain and the local isolates could contribute to this pertussal epidemic.Fil: Bailon, H. Time-dependent Mechanics and Lagrangian submanifolds of Dirac manifolds
A description of time-dependent Mechanics in terms of Lagrangian submanifolds
of Dirac manifolds (in particular, presymplectic and Poisson manifolds) is
presented. Two new Tulczyjew triples are discussed. The first one is adapted to
the restricted Hamiltonian formalism and the second one is adapted to the
extended Hamiltonian formalism
Starbursts and black hole masses in X-shaped radio galaxies: Signatures of a merger event?
We present new spectroscopic identifications of 12 X-shaped radio galaxies
and use the spectral data to derive starburst histories and masses of the
nuclear supermassive black holes in these galaxies. The observations were done
with the 2.1-m telescope of the Observatorio Astron\'omico Nacional at San
Pedro M\'artir, M\'exico. The new spectroscopic results extend the sample of
X-shaped radio galaxies studied with optical spectroscopy. We show that the
combined sample of the X-shaped radio galaxies has statistically higher
black-hole masses and older episodes of star formation than a control sample of
canonical double-lobed radio sources with similar redshifts and luminosities.
The data reveal enhanced star-formation activity in the X-shaped sample on the
timescales expected in galactic mergers. We discuss the results obtained in the
framework of the merger scenario.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy &

Cost of health care utilization among homeless frequent emergency department users
Research demonstrates that homelessness is associated with frequent use of emergency department (ED) services, yet prior studies have not adequately examined the relationship between frequent ED use and utilization of non-ED health care services among those experiencing homelessness. There has also been little effort to assess heterogeneity among homeless individuals who make frequent use of ED services. To address these gaps, the present study used Medicaid claims data from 2010 to estimate the association between the number of ED visits and non-ED health care costs for a cohort of 6,338 Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program patients, and to identify distinct subgroups of persons in this cohort who made frequent use of ED services based on their clinical and demographic characteristics. A series of gamma regression models found more frequent ED use to be associated with higher non-ED costs, even after adjusting for demographic and clinical characteristics. Latent class analysis was used to examine heterogeneity among frequent ED users, and the results identified 6 characteristically distinct subgroups among these persons. The subgroup of persons with trimorbid illness had non-ED costs that far exceeded members of all 5 other subgroups. Study findings reinforce the connection between frequent ED use and high health care costs among homeless individuals and suggest that different groups of homeless frequent ED users may benefit from interventions that vary in terms of their composition and intensity
