Measuring functional renormalization group fixed-point functions for pinned manifolds
Exact numerical minimization of interface energies is used to test the
functional renormalization group (FRG) analysis for interfaces pinned by
quenched disorder. The fixed-point function R(u) (the correlator of the
coarse-grained disorder) is computed. In dimensions D=d+1, a linear cusp in
R''(u) is confirmed for random bond (d=1,2,3), random field (d=0,2,3), and
periodic (d=2,3) disorders. The functional shocks that lead to this cusp are
seen. Small, but significant, deviations from 1-loop FRG results are compared
to 2-loop corrections. The cross-correlation for two copies of disorder is
compared with a recent FRG study of chaos.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The Role of Credence Attribute Claims in Food Product Launch – A Comparative Study of New Zealand and Australia
Purpose: This paper aims to empirically investigate the role of product positioning in the launch of food and drink products using a large dataset of new product development by food companies in Australia (AU) and New Zealand (NZ). As such, positioning through credence attribute claims can be associated with product launch strategies, including brand-new products, expansion of product ranges, new packaging and relaunch, as a response to market demand.
Design/methodology/approach: Text analysis was used to investigate the descriptions of food claims using Structured Query Language, providing a word list of food claims and further filtered and categorised into groups of claims. Multinomial regression models were then employed to analyse the association between product launch strategies and food claims adopted by firms.
Findings: The results of this paper provide evidence that positioning via food claims play an important role in product launch strategies in both AU and NZ. Types of food claims matter differently to firms' product launch decisions in the two markets. The “green” and “ethical” attributes are found to be associated with new launches in NZ but not in AU. Claims that are seen as most important for consumers are more likely to be engendered for the more costly launch approach.
Originality/value: This study is amongst the first studies that addresses the role of positioning in product launch strategies of food companies. The results and findings provide insights into the different prevailing credence attributes from the firm side and help policymakers to regulate the delivery of information about credence attributes to consumers
Meal Patterns and Food Choices of Female Rats Fed a Cafeteria-Style Diet Are Altered by Gastric Bypass Surgery
After Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB), rats tend to reduce consumption of high-sugar and/or high-fat foods over time. Here, we sought to investigate the behavioral mechanisms underlying these intake outcomes. Adult female rats were provided a cafeteria diet comprised of five palatable foodstuffs varying in sugar and fat content and intake was monitored continuously. Rats were then assigned to either RYGB, or one of two control (CTL) groups: sham surgery or a nonsurgical control group receiving the same prophylactic iron treatments as RYGB rats. Post-sur-gically, all rats consumed a large first meal of the cafeteria diet. After the first meal, RYGB rats reduced intake primarily by decreasing the meal sizes relative to CTL rats, ate meals more slowly, and displayed altered nycthemeral timing of intake yielding more daytime meals and fewer nighttime meals. Collectively, these meal patterns indicate that despite being motivated to consume a cafeteria diet after RYGB, rats rapidly learn to modify eating behaviors to consume foods more slowly across the entire day. RYGB rats also altered food preferences, but more slowly than the changes in meal patterns, and ate proportionally more energy from complex carbohydrates and protein and proportionally less fat. Overall, the pattern of results suggests that after RYGB rats quickly learn to adjust their size, eating rate, and distribution of meals without altering meal number and to shift their macronutrient intake away from fat; these changes appear to be more related to postingestive events than to a fundamental decline in the palatability of food choices

Late Quaternary paleoceanography in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean from Planktonic Foraminifiers : a high-resolution record from Site 846
High-resolution records of δ¹⁸0 and relative abundances of planktonic foraminifers were generated for ODP Leg 138 Site 846 for the past 800 k.y., with an average sampling interval of 3.6 k.y. The time scale was constructed by correlating the benthic δ¹⁸0 record to the SPECMAP and ODP Site 677 δ¹⁸0 time scales using the mapping function technique of Martinson et al. (1981). Our observations show that variations in the foraminiferal assemblages, although influenced by dissolution, are interpretable in terms of changing characteristics of upper ocean waters. Carbonate dissolution as indicated by fragmentation of planktonic foraminifers shows concentrated variance that is coherent with δ¹⁸0 at the 100 and 41 k.y. orbital periods. At these periods, maximum dissolution occurs during interglacial extremes. This finding differs from previous studies that have indicated that in this region percent carbonate minimum lags global ice volume minimum. N. dutertrei and dextral N. pachyderma dominate the assemblages, but do not show consistent relationships relative to glacial-interglacial cycles. However, less abundant species G. ruber, G. menardii, G. glutinata and G. sacculifer show positive and G. bulloides negative correlation with the δ¹⁸0 record. Q-mode factor analysis of the Site 846 assemblages and comparison with modern assemblages suggest the following. Prior to and during interglacials, the area was considerably warmer and more subtropical than at present; during glacials, the area was colder than at present with greater upwelling and advection off the eastern boundary, and possibly a stronger Peru Current; the equatorial “cool tongue” was also possibly stronger

Benthic foraminiferal stable isotope stratigraphy of Site 846 : 0-1.8 Ma
A stable-isotope stratigraphy at Site 846 (tropical Pacific, 3°06'S, 90°49'W, 3307 m water depth), based on the benthic
foraminifers Cibicides wuellerstorfi and Uvigerina peregrina, yields a high-resolution record of deep-sea δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C over the
past 1.8 Ma, with an average sampling interval of 3 k.y. Variance in the δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C records is concentrated in the well-known
orbital periods of 100, 41, and 23 k.y. In the 100-k.y. band, both isotopic signals grow from relatively low amplitudes prior to 1.2
Ma, to high amplitudes in the late Quaternary since 0.7 Ma. The amplitude of δ¹⁸O and especially of δ¹³C decreases in the 41-k.y.
band as it grows in the 100-k.y. band, consistent with a transfer of energy into an orbitally-paced internal oscillation. A weak 30-k.y.
rhythm, present in both δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C, may reflect nonlinear interaction between the 41-k.y. and 100-k.y. bands in the evolving
climate system. In the 23-k.y. and 19-k.y. bands associated with orbital precession, δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C are not coherent with each other
on long time scales, and do not evolve like the 100-k.y. and 41-k.y. bands. This suggests that the source of the growing 100-k.y.
oscillation is not a nonlinear response to precession, in contrast to predictions of some climate models. Sedimentation rates at this
site also vary with a strong 100-k.y. cycle. Unlike the isotope records, the amplitude of 100-k.y. variations in sedimentation rate
is relatively constant over the past 1.8 Ma, ranging from about 15 to 70 m/m.y. Prior to 0.9 Ma, sedimentation rates co-vary with
orbital eccentricity, rather than with global climate as reflected by δ¹⁸O or δ¹³C. A source of this 100-k.y. cycle of sedimentation
rate in the absence of similar ice volume fluctuations may be precessional heating of equatorial land masses, which in an energy
balance climate model drives variations of monsoonal climates with a 100-k.y. rhythm. For the interval younger than 0.9 Ma, high
sedimentation rates in the 100-k.y. band are consistently associated with glacial stages. This change of pattern suggests that when
the amplitude of glacial cycles become large enough, their global effects overpower a local monsoon-driven variation in sedimentation
rate at Site 846
Health related quality of life trajectories and predictors following coronary artery bypass surgery
BACKGROUND: Many studies have demonstrated that health related quality of life (HRQoL) improves, on average, after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABGS). However, this average improvement may not be realized for all patients, and it is possible that there are two or more distinctive groups with different, possibly non-linear, trajectories of change over time. Furthermore, little is known about the predictors that are associated with these possible HRQoL trajectories after CABGS. METHODS: 182 patients listed for elective CABGS at The Royal Melbourne Hospital completed a postal battery of questionnaires which included the Short-Form-36 (SF-36), Profile of Mood States (POMS) and the Everyday Functioning Questionnaire (EFQ). These data were collected on average a month before surgery, and at two months and six months after surgery. Socio-demographic and medical characteristics prior to surgery, as well as surgical and post-surgical complications and symptoms were also assessed. Growth curve and growth mixture modelling were used to identify trajectories of HRQoL. RESULTS: For both the physical component summary scale (PCS) and the mental component summary scale (MCS) of the SF-36, two groups of patients with distinct trajectories of HRQoL following surgery could be identified (improvers and non-improvers). A series of logistic regression analyses identified different predictors of group membership for PCS and MCS trajectories. For the PCS the most significant predictors of non-improver membership were lower scores on POMS vigor-activity and higher New York Heart Association dyspnoea class; for the MCS the most significant predictors of non-improver membership were higher scores on POMS depression-dejection and manual occupation. CONCLUSION: It is incorrect to assume that HRQoL will improve in a linear fashion for all patients following CABGS. Nor was there support for a single response trajectory. It is important to identify characteristics of each patient, and those post-operative symptoms that could be possible targets for intervention to improve HRQoL outcomes
A Comparison of Total Food Intake at a Personalised Buffet in People with Obesity, before and 24 Months after Roux-en-Y-Gastric Bypass Surgery
Long-term reductions in the quantity of food consumed, and a shift in intake away from energy dense foods have both been implicated in the potent bariatric effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. We hypothesised that relative to pre-operative assessment, a stereotypical shift to lower intake would be observed at a personalised ad libitum buffet meal 24 months after RYGB, driven in part by decreased selection of high energy density items. At pre-operative baseline, participants (n = 14) rated their preference for 72 individual food items, each of these mapping to one of six categories encompassing high and low-fat choices in combination with sugar, complex carbohydrate or and protein. An 18-item buffet meal was created for each participant based on expressed preferences. Overall energy intake was reduced on average by 60% at the 24-month buffet meal. Reductions in intake were seen across all six food categories. Decreases in the overall intake of all individual macronutrient groups were marked and were generally proportional to reductions in total caloric intake. Patterns of preference and intake, both at baseline and at follow-up appear more idiosyncratic than has been previously suggested by verbal reporting. The data emphasise the consistency with which reductions in ad libitum food intake occur as a sequel of RYGB, this being maintained in the setting of a self-selected ad libitum buffet meal. Exploratory analysis of the data also supports prior reports of a possible relative increase in the proportional intake of protein after RYGB
The contribution of surface and submesoscale processes to turbulence in the open ocean surface boundary layer
The ocean surface boundary layer is a critical interface across which momentum, heat, and trace gases are exchanged between the oceans and atmosphere. Surface processes (winds, waves, and buoyancy forcing) are known to contribute significantly to fluxes within this layer. Recently, studies have suggested that submesoscale processes, which occur at small scales (0.1–10 km, hours to days) and therefore are not yet represented in most ocean models, may play critical roles in these turbulent exchanges. While observational support for such phenomena has been demonstrated in the vicinity of strong current systems and littoral regions, relatively few observations exist in the open‐ocean environment to warrant representation in Earth system models. We use novel observations and simulations to quantify the contributions of surface and submesoscale processes to turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation in the open‐ocean surface boundary layer. Our observations are derived from moorings in the North Atlantic, December 2012 to April 2013, and are complemented by atmospheric reanalysis. We develop a conceptual framework for dissipation rates due to surface and submesoscale processes. Using this framework and comparing with observed dissipation rates, we find that surface processes dominate TKE dissipation. A parameterization for symmetric instability is consistent with this result. We next employ simulations from an ocean front‐resolving model to reestablish that dissipation due to surface processes exceeds that of submesoscale processes by 1–2 orders of magnitude. Together, these results suggest submesoscale processes do not dramatically modify vertical TKE budgets, though such dynamics may be climatically important owing to their ability to remove energy from the ocean
Persistence of a Continuous Stochastic Process with Discrete-Time Sampling: Non-Markov Processes
We consider the problem of `discrete-time persistence', which deals with the
zero-crossings of a continuous stochastic process, X(T), measured at discrete
times, T = n(\Delta T). For a Gaussian Stationary Process the persistence (no
crossing) probability decays as exp(-\theta_D T) = [\rho(a)]^n for large n,
where a = \exp[-(\Delta T)/2], and the discrete persistence exponent, \theta_D,
is given by \theta_D = \ln(\rho)/2\ln(a). Using the `Independent Interval
Approximation', we show how \theta_D varies with (\Delta T) for small (\Delta
T) and conclude that experimental measurements of persistence for smooth
processes, such as diffusion, are less sensitive to the effects of discrete
sampling than measurements of a randomly accelerated particle or random walker.
We extend the matrix method developed by us previously [Phys. Rev. E 64,
015151(R) (2001)] to determine \rho(a) for a two-dimensional random walk and
the one-dimensional random acceleration problem. We also consider `alternating

Frequency selection by soliton excitation in nondegenerate intracavity downconversion
We show that soliton excitation in intracavity downconversion naturally
selects a strictly defined frequency difference between the signal and idler
fields. In particular, this phenomenon implies that if the signal has smaller
losses than the idler then its frequency is pulled away from the cavity
resonance and the idler frequency is pulled towards the resonance and {\em vice
versa}. The frequency selection is shown to be closely linked with the relative
