Double subtitles as an effective tool for vocabulary learning

    Get PDF
The present study aimed to investigate if and how the mere minimal exposureto subtitled audio-visual input in an unknown language can enhance incidentalvocabulary learning. Three experimental conditions were compared inwhich native Dutch participants with no prior knowledge of the target language(Russian) viewed an eight-minute Russian cartoon with: (a) standard(Dutch) subtitles or (b) double (Russian and Dutch) subtitles. A control groupwatched the cartoon: (c) without subtitles. All participants were tested on vocabulary gains and visual information processing after having watched the cartoon three times. Results revealed that vocabulary acquisition did occur afterwatching the cartoon. Interestingly, participants who were exposed to thedouble subtitles condition significantly outperformed those who watched thecartoon with standard subtitles on a written word recognition test. Moreover, participants who were exposed to the subtitle conditions were better at remembering the sequence of scenes from the cartoon they had seen. The results thus provide evidence for increased processing of the visual scene as wellas incidental vocabulary learning after the exposure to subtitled audio-visualinput with no pre-existing knowledge of the target language and, more specifically, evidence for the particularly beneficial effects of the double subtitles

Hypercoordinated Carbon in 2,8,9-Sila- and Thia-Substituted Carbatranes

Ab initio methods demonstrate that internally protonated forms (a) of the molecules of carbatranes XC(SiH2CH2CH2)3N (X = H, F) are significantly more favorable than their externally protonated forms (b). The quantum-topological AIM approach suggests that the main reason for that is the formation of a medium-strength hydrogen C···H+N bond unknown previously in the silacarbanyl cations a

The Sociopsychological Profile of Persons with Alcohol Anosognosia in the Context of Social Customer Support

AIM: We aimed to focus on the sociopsychological profile of a person with alcohol anosognosia. METHODS: The study was conducted in the narcological inpatient adult department of the Starooskolsky Narcological Dispensary for 1.5 months and involved 60 male patients over the age of 18 with at least 5-year alcohol dependence. RESULTS: As a result of the study, the individual typological features of patients with anosognosia were identified and structured. CONCLUSION: The findings may be applied in the development of social support measures for persons with anosognosia to resocialize them and achieve long-term therapeutic remission

L-NAME-induced preeclampsia: correction of functional disorders of the hemostasis system with resveratrol and nicorandil

Preeclampsia is a formidable disease of the second half of pregnancy, leading to severe complications, including disability and even death. Many authors have recognized the correlation between the severity of preeclampsia and the degree of disturbances in the hemostasis system. In this regard, the objective of this study was to assess inhibition of platelet aggregation and the possibility of its correction with resverаtrol and nicorand

Enhancing food packaging with nanofillers: properties, applications, and innovations

    Get PDF
Food packaging is undergoing a revolutionary change because of nanotechnology. This paper examines the influence of nanofillers on improving food packaging materials. Due to their distinctive qualities, nanofillers like nanoparticles and nanocomposites change food product protection, preservation, and appearance. The advantages of nanofillers, which may be controlled in terms of mechanical, barrier, thermal, optical, and surface characteristics, are described in the article along with their definition. Systematic examination exposes the many functions of nanofillers, from maintaining food safety with antibacterial Nano silver to increasing shelf life with better barriers. They also support sustainability and clever packaging. Innovative applications for real-time food monitoring are investigated, along with case examples demonstrating their efficacy, including nanocomposite materials, nanosensors, and nanotags. The use of nanofillers is evaluated concerning safety, compliance, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact. Future research trends that will influence food packaging are outlined. A critical step toward developing safer, more robust, and environmentally friendly packaging solutions is represented by nanofillers. This review is a valuable tool for anyone involved in food packaging since it provides information on disruptive technology transforming food packaging into an intelligent, environmentally friendly guardian of food quality and safety
