The Meaning of Animals
This research examines the social construction of animals by a rural Allegheny culture using a linguistic approach based on estimating the set of attributes associated with the words they used to describe animals. We asked 268 respondents to free-associate with the nouns, chicken and deer when seen in a context of other words related to nature. Their responses were coded and the frequencies of of words and word groupings were tabulated for sub-samples of differing age, gender and occupation. Response words were categorized into seven typologies including two affective types. The results indicate that except for possibly the very young, the social meanings of chicken and deer did not vary with gender, age or occupation. The respondents interpretation of living chicken was indistinguishable from that of unprepared food. Their interpretation of deer was broader and primarily one of interaction with a lesser adversary

The Hobby Farm
On the family farm, the romance of farming and emotional ties to the land are in opposition to economic forces that arise from the inherent vulnerability and inefficiency of small scale operations in a market dominated by agribusiness. Some small farmers, however, have developed strategies to keep their farms in business. This paper focuses on how two of these strategies, capitalization on the popular vision of the small farmer and the dual career, combine to affect the fate of farms that can no longer entirely support themselves. These farms tend to evolve into âhobby farmsâ as they call themselves, marginally commercial farms that have a cheery recreational outward appearance. Most family farms provide a minority of the income of the families that operate them. They are stabilized and sometimes subsidized by their ownersâ off-farm occupations. At the same time, the need for farmers to be creative in the production of their work has caused them to seek out niche markets where the small size of their farms is an advantage. In the presence of sufficient off-farm income, they frequently remain as farms retaining their title and acreage but with only minimal output. The small remaining animal herds are often characterized as pets for the family to play with
Hierarchical strategies for efficient fault recovery on the reconfigurable PAnDA device
A novel hierarchical fault-tolerance methodology for reconfigurable devices is presented. A bespoke multi-reconfigurable FPGA architecture, the programmable analogue and digital array (PAnDA), is introduced allowing fine-grained reconfiguration beyond any other FPGA architecture currently in existence. Fault blind circuit repair strategies, which require no specific information of the nature or location of faults, are developed, exploiting architectural features of PAnDA. Two fault recovery techniques, stochastic and deterministic strategies, are proposed and results of each, as well as a comparison of the two, are presented. Both approaches are based on creating algorithms performing fine-grained hierarchical partial reconfiguration on faulty circuits in order to repair them. While the stochastic approach provides insights into feasibility of the method, the deterministic approach aims to generate optimal repair strategies for generic faults induced into a specific circuit. It is shown that both techniques successfully repair the benchmark circuits used after random faults are induced in random circuit locations, and the deterministic strategies are shown to operate efficiently and effectively after optimisation for a specific use case. The methods are shown to be generally applicable to any circuit on PAnDA, and to be straightforwardly customisable for any FPGA fabric providing some regularity and symmetry in its structure
Educational campaign to support pregnant women and new mothers in enjoying and benefiting from an active lifestyle. Insight report.
Recent research has shown that pregnant women who were physically active at the time of their booking appointment with a midwife (8-12 weeks) were most likely to initiate further discussion about maintaining their physical activity, however, it has also been found that there is a lack of consistent and clear information pertaining to physical activity messages with many health professionals either providing no such information or giving inappropriate guidance to women of childbearing age.
A lack of training, knowledge, and resources regarding physical activity have resulted in healthcare professionals relying on common sense and their own experience to advise and guide pregnant women and new mothers. In turn, this often results in pregnant women and new mothers turning to informal sources, such as the internet, for guidance.
In response, this project aims to develop a toolkit to support the delivery of consistent and clear messages regarding physical activity by healthcare professionals (in line with current guidance), as well as helping to stimulate engagement with physical activity in our target audiences. Through increasing the confidence, skills, and knowledge of healthcare professionals, it is expected that pregnant women and new mothers will be empowered to make informed physical activity choices throughout pregnancy and beyond.
This report brings together the insights from the scoping activities carried out to facilitate the development of an educational campaign to support pregnant women and new mothers in enjoying and benefiting from an active lifestyle. The report provides an overview of the key themes that became apparent and conclude with points for discussion and next steps in the project delivery
Composite fermions from the algebraic point of view
Composite fermion wavefuctions have been used to describe electrons in a
strong magnetic field. We show that the polynomial part of these wavefunctions
can be obtained by applying a normal ordered product of suitably defined
annihilation and creation operators to an even power of the Vandermonde
determinant, which can been considered as a kind of a non-trivial Fermi sea. In
the case of the harmonic interaction we solve the system exactly in the lowest
Landau level. The solution makes explicit the boson-fermion correspondence

LICSS - a chemical spreadsheet in microsoft excel
Abstract Background Representations of chemical datasets in spreadsheet format are important for ready data assimilation and manipulation. In addition to the normal spreadsheet facilities, chemical spreadsheets need to have visualisable chemical structures and data searchable by chemical as well as textual queries. Many such chemical spreadsheet tools are available, some operating in the familiar Microsoft Excel environment. However, within this group, the performance of Excel is often compromised, particularly in terms of the number of compounds which can usefully be stored on a sheet. Summary LICSS is a lightweight chemical spreadsheet within Microsoft Excel for Windows. LICSS stores structures solely as Smiles strings. Chemical operations are carried out by calling Java code modules which use the CDK, JChemPaint and OPSIN libraries to provide cheminformatics functionality. Compounds in sheets or charts may be visualised (individually or en masse), and sheets may be searched by substructure or similarity. All the molecular descriptors available in CDK may be calculated for compounds (in batch or on-the-fly), and various cheminformatic operations such as fingerprint calculation, Sammon mapping, clustering and R group table creation may be carried out. We detail here the features of LICSS and how they are implemented. We also explain the design criteria, particularly in terms of potential corporate use, which led to this particular implementation. Conclusions LICSS is an Excel-based chemical spreadsheet with a difference: âą It can usefully be used on sheets containing hundreds of thousands of compounds; it doesn't compromise the normal performance of Microsoft Excel âą It is designed to be installed and run in environments in which users do not have admin privileges; installation involves merely file copying, and sharing of LICSS sheets invokes automatic installation âą It is free and extensible LICSS is open source software and we hope sufficient detail is provided here to enable developers to add their own features and share with the community.</p
