    Maximising Slurry Crop Available Nitrogen Utilisation in Grassland Systems

    In the UK, approximately 90 million tonnes of animal manure containing ca 450,000 tonnes of nitrogen (N) are recycled to agricultural land each year. The efficient utilisation of manure N can save farmers money and reduce diffuse air (ammonia) and water (nitrate) pollution. For slurries, bandspreading techniques (e.g. trailing shoe and trailing hose) can improve N utilisation by reducing ammonia volatilisation losses compared with conventional broadcast applications. They also provide increased spreading opportunities in spring/summer as slurry is placed in a band on the soil surface limiting herbage contamination, which can reduce the need to apply slurry in the autumn/early winter period that can exacerbate nitrate leaching losses. However, spring/summer application timings (when temperatures are higher and soils are drier) may lead to increased ammonia emissions compared with autumn/winter applications under cooler and moister soil conditions.     Blogging in the physics classroom: A research-based approach to shaping students' attitudes towards physics

    Even though there has been a tremendous amount of research done in how to help students learn physics, students are still coming away missing a crucial piece of the puzzle: why bother with physics? Students learn fundamental laws and how to calculate, but come out of a general physics course without a deep understanding of how physics has transformed the world around them. In other words, they get the "how" but not the "why". Studies have shown that students leave introductory physics courses almost universally with decreased expectations and with a more negative attitude. This paper will detail an experiment to address this problem: a course weblog or "blog" which discusses real-world applications of physics and engages students in discussion and thinking outside of class. Specifically, students' attitudes towards the value of physics and its applicability to the real-world were probed using a 26-question Likert scale survey over the course of four semesters in an introductory physics course at a comprehensive Jesuit university. We found that students who did not participate in the blog study generally exhibited a deterioration in attitude towards physics as seen previously. However, students who read, commented, and were involved with the blog maintained their initially positive attitudes towards physics. Student response to the blog was overwhelmingly positive, with students claiming that the blog made the things we studied in the classroom come alive for them and seem much more relevant.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure

    Criminal narrative experience: relating emotions to offence narrative roles during crime commission

    A neglected area of research within criminality has been that of the experience of the offence for the offender. The present study investigates the emotions and narrative roles that are experienced by an offender while committing a broad range of crimes and proposes a model of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE). Hypotheses were derived from the Circumplex of Emotions (Russell, 1997), Frye (1957), Narrative Theory (McAdams, 1988) and its link with Investigative Psychology (Canter, 1994). The analysis was based on 120 cases. Convicted for a variety of crimes, incarcerated criminals were interviewed and the data were subjected to Smallest Space Analysis (SSA). Four themes of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) were identified: Elated Hero, Calm Professional, Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim in line with the recent theoretical framework posited for Narrative Offence Roles (Youngs & Canter, 2012). The theoretical implications for understanding crime on the basis of the Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) as well as practical implications are discussed

    How well do police specialists risk assess Registered Sexual Offenders?

    This study examined 91 Active Risk Management System (ARMS) assessments from four police areas across England and Wales. ARMS is a tool that guides criminal justice practitioners to assess and develop formal risk management plans based on the risks and strengths of individual clients convicted of sexual offending. This present study is particularly concerned with the application of this new tool and the quality of subsequent risk assessment as a result of police practitioner assessment. Findings indicate the quality of ARMS assessments were not to the expected standard. The study found while there were acceptable levels of detail and evidence documented by practitioners across individual areas; overall, assessor risk ratings and risk management plans were poor. This paper provides an outline of these findings, making suggestions for areas of improvement, along with recommendations for policy, practice, and research
