Throughout six years as a supervisor in an English curriculum in Grades 7–12, where I have observed thirty teachers each year advancing communication skills in classrooms, a thought—or question—has recurred like an ache somewhere in the body. The question, never answered and rarely treated, has been, Of what benefit will this study be to these children in life, particularly in adult life? Attendance at six consecutive conventions of the National Council of Teachers of English has not produced much in the way of alleviation of the discomfort. Neither have four convention experiences as a program participant: programs which have dealt with writing essays (twice), duties of a department chairperson, and a session for supervisors and coordinators. In fact, the subject of adult needs has never been treated in those experiences. Much has been said of relevance in recent years, so much in fact that the word brings knowing smiles to the faces of teachers. Relevance always has seemed to mean materials of high-motivation, very much related or similar to the teen-ager\u27s life and interests, with little substance to thrust the teen-ager out of his or her provincial world into something broader and closer to what is defined as education

Remarkable Lives :Robert Lawrence in conversation with Jerome Carson

The purpose of the paper is to provide a profile of Robert Lawrence. Robert provides a short background to his life and is then interviewed by Jerome. Robert talks about the slow onset of his condition, his hospital admission and subsequent long journey of recovery. Case studies are of course only one person’s story. The world of someone experiencing psychosis is so different that we can only really understand it fully through the accounts of sufferers like Robert. Robert makes a number of points about how services could be improved, such as through quicker and better treatment and a commitment to promote positive mental health. Robert talks about “benefits you can live off.” He notes that some governments have not fully appreciated the reality of mental suffering and its effects on trying to live a “normal” life. Robert’s story has seen him embark on a long journey. He has now managed to study for a qualification which will hopefully bring him employment as a counsellor

Monetary Policy Changes and Inflationary Pressure in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Achieving price stability has continued to be one of the major macroeconomic policy objectives of successive governments in Nigeria. This is because, inflation rate, as measured by changes in consumers price index (CPI), has continued to be on the increase despite the implementation of monetary policy measures to control it. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to analyze the impact of monetary policy changes on inflationary pressure in Nigeria. This is to identify whether inflationary pressure in Nigeria is a monetary phenomenon or not. Annual time series data on changes in inflation rate, broad money supply, net domestic credit, monetary policy rate, real GDP growth rate (real output) and exchange rate were collected from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin, 2018 issue. To analyze the data, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, applying bounds test, was adopted. The empirical results show that monetary variables (broad money supply, net domestic credit, monetary policy rate) have insignificant impact on inflation both in the short run and long run respectively. Real output has the expected negative sign and its impact on inflation is significant both in the short run and long run. This implies that inflation in Nigeria is more of output than monetary phenomenon. It is recommended that Nigeria should invest more in agricultural sector since more output is sourced from the sector. This will help to reduce food (price) inflation in the country
