Spinorial Characterizations of Surfaces into 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian Space Forms
We give a spinorial characterization of isometrically immersed surfaces of
arbitrary signature into 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian space forms. For
Lorentzian surfaces, this generalizes a recent work of the first author in
to other Lorentzian space forms. We also characterize
immersions of Riemannian surfaces in these spaces. From this we can deduce
analogous results for timelike immersions of Lorentzian surfaces in space forms
of corresponding signature, as well as for spacelike and timelike immersions of
surfaces of signature (0,2), hence achieving a complete spinorial description
for this class of pseudo-Riemannian immersions.Comment: 9 page
Six-Month Mortality among HIV-Infected Adults Presenting for Antiretroviral Therapy with Unexplained Weight Loss, Chronic Fever or Chronic Diarrhea in Malawi.
In sub-Saharan Africa, early mortality is high following initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). We investigated 6-month outcomes and factors associated with mortality in HIV-infected adults being assessed for ART initiation and presenting with weight loss, chronic fever or diarrhea, and with negative TB sputum microscopy

AIM: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a safe and effective method of reducing neonatal mortality in resource-limited settings, but there has been a lack of data on the duration of skin-to-skin contact (SSC) in busy, low-resource newborn units. Previous studies of intermittent KMC suggest the duration of SSC ranged from 10 minutes to 17 hours per day. METHODS: This was an observational study of newborn infants born weighing less than 2000 g, which collected quantitative data on SSC over the first week after birth. The study took place in July 2016 in the newborn unit of a low-resource facility in Uganda. RESULTS: The mean daily duration of SSC over the first week after birth was three hours. This differed significantly from the World Health Organization recommendation of at least 20 hours of SSC per day. SSC was provided by mothers most of the time (73.5%), but other family members also took part, especially on the day of birth. CONCLUSION: Our study found a disappointingly low daily duration of SSC in this Ugandan newborn unit. However, advocacy and community education of SSC may help to decrease the stigma of KMC, improve overall acceptance and reduce the age at SSC initiation
Dynamical brittle fractures of nanocrystalline silicon using large-scale electronic structure calculations
A hybrid scheme between large-scale electronic structure calculations is
developed and applied to nanocrystalline silicon with more than 10 atoms.
Dynamical fracture processes are simulated under external loads in the [001]
direction. We shows that the fracture propagates anisotropically on the (001)
plane and reconstructed surfaces appear with asymmetric dimers. Step structures
are formed in larger systems, which is understood as the beginning of a
crossover between nanoscale and macroscale samples.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Crack fronts and damage in glass at the nanometer scale
We have studied the low speed fracture regime for different glassy materials
with variable but controlled length scales of heterogeneity in a carefully
mastered surrounding atmosphere. By using optical and atomic force microscopy
(AFM) techniques we tracked in real-time the crack tip propagation at the
nanometer scale on a wide velocity range (mm/s - pm/s and below). The influence
of the heterogeneities on this velocity is presented and discussed. Our
experiments reveal also -for the first time- that the crack progresses through
nucleation, growth and coalescence of nanometric damage cavities within the
amorphous phase. This may explain the large fluctuations observed in the crack
tip velocities for the smallest values. This behaviour is very similar to what
is involved, at the micrometric scale, in ductile fracture. The only difference
is very likely due to the related length scales (nanometric instead of
micrometric). Consequences of such a nano-ductile fracture mode observed at a
temperature far below the glass transition temperature in glass is finally

Measuring coverage in MNCH: indicators for global tracking of newborn care.
Neonatal mortality accounts for 43% of under-five mortality. Consequently, improving newborn survival is a global priority. However, although there is increasing consensus on the packages and specific interventions that need to be scaled up to reduce neonatal mortality, there is a lack of clarity on the indicators needed to measure progress. In 2008, in an effort to improve newborn survival, the Newborn Indicators Technical Working Group (TWG) was convened by the Saving Newborn Lives program at Save the Children to provide a forum to develop the indicators and standard measurement tools that are needed to measure coverage of key newborn interventions. The TWG, which included evaluation and measurement experts, researchers, individuals from United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations, and donors, prioritized improved consistency of measurement of postnatal care for women and newborns and of immediate care behaviors and practices for newborns. In addition, the TWG promoted increased data availability through inclusion of additional questions in nationally representative surveys, such as the United States Agency for International Development-supported Demographic and Health Surveys and the United Nations Children's Fund-supported Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys. Several studies have been undertaken that have informed revisions of indicators and survey tools, and global postnatal care coverage indicators have been finalized. Consensus has been achieved on three additional indicators for care of the newborn after birth (drying, delayed bathing, and cutting the cord with a clean instrument), and on testing two further indicators (immediate skin-to-skin care and applications to the umbilical cord). Finally, important measurement gaps have been identified regarding coverage data for evidence-based interventions, such as Kangaroo Mother Care and care seeking for newborn infection
How do liquids confined at the nanoscale influence adhesion?
Liquids play an important role in adhesion and sliding friction. They behave
as lubricants in human bodies especially in the joints. However, in many
biological attachment systems they acts like adhesives, e.g. facilitating
insects to move on ceilings or vertical walls. Here we use molecular dynamics
to study how liquids confined at the nanoscale influence the adhesion between
solid bodies with smooth and rough surfaces. We show that a monolayer of liquid
