    An Empirical Investigation into IS Development Practice in New Zealand

    A Web-based survey of 106 large New Zealand organisations was undertaken to gain an understanding of their IS development practices. The survey focussed on the contribution of standard methods and user participation to IS development. Among the findings were that 91% of the respondents used a standard method in the development process in at least some of projects undertaken in the last three years. All organisations reported using some level of user participation. The majority of organisations agreed that organisational issues had been more important than technical issues in determining the outcome of the IS development in these projects

    Large Dog Relinquishment to Two Municipal Facilities in New York City and Washington, D.C.: Identifying Targets for Intervention

    While the overall trend in euthanasia has been decreasing nationally, large dogs are at a higher risk of euthanasia than other sized dogs in most animal shelters in the United States. We hypothesized one way to increase the lives saved with respect to these large dogs is to keep them home when possible. In order to develop solutions to decrease relinquishment, a survey was developed to learn more about the reasons owners relinquish large dogs. The survey was administered to owners relinquishing their dogs at two large municipal facilities, one in New York City and one in Washington, D.C. There were 157 responses between the two facilities. We found both significant similarities and differences between respondents and their dogs from the two cities. We identified opportunities to potentially support future relinquishers and found that targets for interventions are likely different in each community

    Mechanism of Collisionally-Induced Transitions Among Fine-Structure Levels: Semiclassical Calculations of Alignment Effects in the Na-He System

    To gain insight into the mechanism of Na(3p)2P3/2→2P1/2 fine‐structure transitions induced by collision with He, we monitor the expectation values of the orbital‐ and spin‐angular momentum vectors, l and s, as a function of time along the trajectory, using a semiclassical formalism. In a typical collision, 〈s〉 remains nearly space‐fixed while 〈l〉 precesses about the rotating internuclear axis. Thus, in the interaction region, the projection of 〈l〉 onto the internuclear axis, ă€ˆÎ»ă€‰, remains nearly constant, and the molecular alignment of the orbital is preserved. We show how equations of motion for the classical analogues of these expectation values agree qualitatively with the quantum equations of motion. A qualitative comparison is also made with the Cs–He system for which the spin–orbit coupling is much stronger. We calculate cross sections for Na(2P3/2)+He→Na(2P1/2)+He as a function of the alignment of the excitation laser polarization with respect to the asymptotic relative velocity vector. For stationary pumping of the excited F=3 hyperfine level, this calculation predicts that the perpendicular alignment gives a cross section which is larger by a factor of 1.8 than that obtained by parallel alignment

    Postoperative Infection Rates with Instrumented Lumbar Fusion: A Retrospective Review of 129 Consecutive Cases

    Introduction: The use of internal fixation devices in spinal surgery is common to achieve reduction, maintain alignment, and stabilize the spine while fusion occurs. Infection rates of less than 2% (0-2%) were reported in the late 1960\u27s without the use of instrumentation. Reported rates of infection following instrumented fusion are generally around 6% (range 0-11% ). The purpose of this study was to retrospectively review the incidence of postoperative infection following instrumented spinal fusion to determine if infection rates related to patient type and surgical procedure. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of 129 consecutive cases of instrumented lumbar spinal fusion. Three patients were eliminated from the study: two due to preoperative spinal infections, and a third patient expired from unrelated disease. All instrumented fusion cases were eligible for this study regardless of level or technique used. Results: Of the 126 instrumented cases there were no superficial infections, and one (0.8%) deep infection. The infection was completely resolved and did not prevent solid fusion with good alignment. The patient was a smoker and received autograft bone. Discussion: The results of this review revealed substantially lower rates of postoperative infection following instrumented fusion than has been previously reported in the literature. No superficial and one (0.8%) deep infection was identified. Due to the low infection rates, no statistically significant conclusions could be made

    Custom-molded foot-orthosis intervention and multi-segment medial foot kinematics during walking

    Context: Foot-orthosis (FO) intervention to prevent and treat numerous lower extremity injuries is widely accepted clinically. However, the results of quantitative gait analyses have been equivocal. The foot models used, participants receiving intervention, and orthoses used might contribute to the variability. Objective: To investigate the effect of a custom-molded FO intervention on multisegment medial foot kinematics during walking in participants with low-mobile foot posture. Design: Crossover study. Setting: University biomechanics and ergonomics laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Sixteen participants with low-mobile foot posture (7 men, 9 women) were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 FO groups. Intervention(s): After a 2-week period to break in the FOs, individuals participated in a gait analysis that consisted of 5 successful walking trials (1.3 to 1.4 m/s) during no-FO and FO conditions. Main Outcome Measure(s): Three-dimensional displacements during 4 subphases of stance (loading response, mid- stance, terminal stance, preswing) were computed for each multisegment foot model articulation. Results: Repeated-measures analyses of variance (ANO- VAs) revealed that rearfoot complex dorsiflexion displacement during midstance was greater in the FO than the no-FO condition (F114 = 5.24, P=.O4, partial r|2 = 0.27). Terminal stance repeated-measures ANOVA results revealed insert-by-insert condition interactions for the first metatarsophalangeal ÂĄoint complex (F114=7.87, P=.O1, partial if = 0.36). However, additional follow-up analysis did not reveal differences between the no-FO and FO conditions for the balanced traditional ortho- sis (F, 14 = 4.32, P = .O8, partial if = 0.38) or full-contact orthosis (F1i14 = 4.10, P=.O8, partial if = 0.37). Conclusions: Greater rearfoot complex dorsiflexion during midstance associated with FO intervention may represent improved foot kinematics in people with low-mobile foot postures. Furthermore, FO intervention might partially correct dysfunctional kinematic patterns associated with low-mobile foot postures.
