Nonstationary Stochastic Simulation of Strong Ground-Motion Time Histories : Application to the Japanese Database

For earthquake-resistant design, engineering seismologists employ time-history analysis for nonlinear simulations. The nonstationary stochastic method previously developed by Pousse et al. (2006) has been updated. This method has the advantage of being both simple, fast and taking into account the basic concepts of seismology (Brune's source, realistic time envelope function, nonstationarity and ground-motion variability). Time-domain simulations are derived from the signal spectrogram and depend on few ground-motion parameters: Arias intensity, significant relative duration and central frequency. These indicators are obtained from empirical attenuation equations that relate them to the magnitude of the event, the source-receiver distance, and the site conditions. We improve the nonstationary stochastic method by using new functional forms (new surface rock dataset, analysis of both intra-event and inter-event residuals, consideration of the scaling relations and VS30), by assessing the central frequency with S-transform and by better considering the stress drop variability.Comment: 10 pages; 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Lisbon : Portugal (2012

Nous tentons dans cet article une description des opérations énonciatives dont coudon est le marqueur linguistique en québécois vernaculaire. Il s’agit soit d’un connecteur soit d’un ancreur. Comme connecteur, il apparaît dans des structures simples de type p coudon q. L’élément p est alors donné comme contenant un procès duratif ou répétitif dont coudon dégage la cause, la conséquence ou une vérité générale. Comme ancreur, il apparaît dans des structures plus complexes de type « coudon — thème — (thème dérivé) — propos ». Il introduit alors un propos modalisé, en ancrant d’abord un thème nouveau sur ce qui précède, selon des lois très strictes. Coudon dégage certains effets perlocutoires particuliers et tend à se spécialiser dans la fonction phatique de marqueur d’un « accusé de réception »

Saturated laser fluorescence in turbulent sooting flames at high pressure

The primary objective was to develop a quantitative, single pulse, laser-saturated fluorescence (LSF) technique for measurement of radical species concentrations in practical flames. The species of immediate interest was the hydroxyl radical. Measurements were made in both turbulent premixed diffusion flames at pressures between 1 and 20 atm. Interferences from Mie scattering were assessed by doping with particles or by controlling soot loading through variation of equivalence ratio and fuel type. The efficacy of the LSF method at high pressure was addressed by comparing fluorescence and adsorption measurements in a premixed, laminar flat flame at 1-20 atm. Signal-averaging over many laser shots is sufficient to determine the local concentration of radical species in laminar flames. However, for turbulent flames, single pulse measurements are more appropriate since a statistically significant number of laser pulses is needed to determine the probability function (PDF). PDFs can be analyzed to give true average properties and true local kinetics in turbulent, chemically reactive flows
