    In examining the journey that has brought me to the position I am in as a dramaturg, artist, and person, it would be at best rude and at worst irresponsible not to acknowledge the universe of people, productions, and ideas that have molded me. Just as plays are composites and amalgams of ideas, emotions, styles, and themes, so is an emerging dramaturg. My experience is both entirely my own, and not my own at all. In reflecting this experience for my thesis exhibit, I feel it’s important to isolate those individuals and ideas that have molded me. By presenting their stories, styles, and experiences, I have a framework to weave in my own experience and artifacts. I still feel that the methods and readings that I have explored are useful and have a place in the final presentation. Dramaturgy is most frequently explained through a collection of metaphors, and rather than trying to find one perfectly crafted mother metaphor, I believe that it would be more beneficial and make more pedagogical sense to match the interviews and resources from these dramaturgs with a metaphor. In this way, a universe of dramaturgical practice emerges visually, where the viewer can choose which sort of “planet” to visit, and when. Presenting these stories, and the moments where they intersect with mine, creates a sort of performance text for me to then curate and dramaturg. I am confident in my ability to craft this text in a way that is both visually appealing and elegant in narrative. I want to do this by using the methods that I’ve already explored - there doesn’t need to be a drastic change to my annotated bibliography. I’ll be adding more short-form articles about curation and dramaturgy, as well as primary source documentation. Many of the questions I began with in the spring were questions that combined concepts I wanted to explore in my thesis, and concepts that required only my own soul-searching. As I’ve moved into the work in earnest, I’ve discovered that I’m asking some questions that have two, five, ten, and twenty year answers. I want to ask the questions that I can answer in the next five months, and let the rest of the answers grow with me

    Parks, people and pixels: evaluating landscape effects of an East African national park on its surroundings

    Landscapes surrounding protected areas, while still containing considerable biodiversity, have rapidly growing human populations and associated agricultural development in most of the developing world that tend to isolate them, potentially reducing their conservation value. Using field studies and multi-temporal Landsat imagery, we examine a forest park, Kibale National Park in western Uganda, its changes over time, and related land cover change in the surrounding landscape. We find Kibale has successfully defended its borders and prevents within-park deforestation and other land incursions, and has maintained tree cover throughout the time period of the study. Outside the park there was a significant increase in tea plantations and continued forest fragmentation and wetland loss. The question of whether the park is a conservation success because of the network of forest fragments and wetlands or in spite of them remains unanswered

    The weakly electric fish, Apteronotus albifrons, actively avoids experimentally induced hypoxia

    Anthropogenic environmental degradation has led to an increase in the frequency and prevalence of aquatic hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen concentration, DO), which may affect habitat quality for water-breathing fishes. The weakly electric black ghost knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons, is typically found in well-oxygenated freshwater habitats in South America. Using a shuttle-box design, we exposed juvenile A. albifrons to a stepwise decline in DO from normoxia (> 95% air saturation) to extreme hypoxia (10% air saturation) in one compartment and chronic normoxia in the other. On average, A. albifrons actively avoided the hypoxic compartment below 22% air saturation. Hypoxia avoidance was correlated with upregulated swimming activity. Following avoidance, fish regularly ventured back briefly into deep hypoxia. Hypoxia did not affect the frequency of their electric organ discharges. Our results show that A. albifrons is able to sense hypoxia at non-lethal levels and uses active avoidance to mitigate its adverse effects.Peer Reviewe

    Evaluation of patient perceptions of team based care in a Geriatric Oncology Clinic

    Purpose: To measure patient perceptions of collaborative practice in an interprofessional team providing geriatric oncology assessments to older patients with cancer. Background: The Senior Adult Oncology Clinic (SAOC) at Thomas Jefferson University’s Kimmel Cancer Center utilizes an interprofessional team approach to provide comprehensive geriatric oncology assessments and treatment plans for older patients with cancer. The importance of team-based healthcare delivery is well documented, however, experts agree that there is a need for more tools to assess the skills required to become a high-functioning team and a need to study the impact of collaborative practice on patient reported outcomes and satisfaction. For this study, we sought to evaluate patients’ experience and perception of our SAOC team function. Description of Intervention: Upon completion of a SAOC visit, patients were asked to participate in a short voluntary survey to assess team performance. The Jefferson Teamwork Observation Guide (JTOG) is a validated survey used with learners that has been adapted to elicit patient perspectives of five domains of interprofessional collaborative practice, including communication (C), values/ethics (V/E), teamwork (T), roles/responsibilities (R) and patient-centeredness (PC). The Patient JTOG includes eight competency–based Likert Scale questions as well as one open-ended question. The survey was administered on secure mobile tablets by trained research assistants (RAs) who were not part of the healthcare team. The study received exempt approval by our Institutional Review Board. Results: A total of 13 patients completed the survey. Seven respondents were female, and six were male. Seven identified as Caucasian, four as African American and two as other. One hundred percent responded “Strongly Agree” to a global question about the importance of teamwork in patient care (mean 4.0). Overall satisfaction with the SAOC team was 3.92 out of 4.0. For the eight questions relating to each of the five collaborative practice competencies noted above, the team received an average score ranging from 3.69 to 3.77 out of 4.0, for a global score of 29.66 (out of 32 possible), placing this team in the highest quartile of teams surveyed at our institution to date (n=407). In addition, all 13 respondents completed the open-ended qualitative comments with 12 out of the 13 being positive with multiple references to effective listening and communication, team coordination, and patient-centered care. Conclusion: The SAOC has a relatively unique model of providing interprofessional geriatric oncology assessments. The Patient JTOG tool was easy to incorporate into a busy clinic and provided valuable feedback to our providers, demonstrating that our patient’s perceive the team as highly functioning and effective.     An International Policy Analysis of School-Level Decision Making and Student Achievement

O'DwyerThe purpose of this study was to inform future policy regarding school leadership practices through examining the relationship between reported decision making at the school level and student achievement. The study utilized a mixed methods design, and examined three main components. The first component involved a qualitative analysis of 14 countries' school leadership polices, as described in country background reports submitted to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The second component used hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to examine the relationship between principal reported school decision making and student achievement in mathematics and reading on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in the same 14 countries. The final component of this study connected the results from the policy analysis to the results of the HLM analysis to determine if there were patterns between a country's policies and the relationship between school-level decision making and student achievement. The study found that out of 14 countries included in the analysis, six countries were identified as having polices that were highly decentralized, three countries had policies that were highly centralized and five countries had policies that were somewhere in between the two extremes. The quantitative results showed that school-level decision making variables were limited in their utility as predictors of student achievement. Finally, an examination of the combined qualitative and quantitative results did not reveal any obvious patterns. However, the findings did highlight the importance of context in examining countries' policies and the relationship between leadership practices in the form of school decision making and student achievement.Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2011.Submitted to: Boston College.     A Spark in the Dark: Uncovering Natural Activity Patterns of Mormyrid Weakly Electric Fish

    To understand animal ecology, observation of wildlife in the natural habitat is essential, but particularly challenging in the underwater realm. Weakly electric fishes provide an excellent opportunity to overcome some of these challenges because they generate electric organ discharges (EODs) to sense their environment and to communicate, which can be detected non-invasively. We tracked the EOD and swimming activity of two species of mormyrid weakly electric fishes (Marcusenius victoriae and Petrocephalus degeni) over diel cycles in the laboratory, and we recorded EODs and environmental dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and temperature over several months in a naturally hypoxic habitat in Uganda. Under laboratory conditions, both species showed increases of activity and exploration behavior that were closely synchronized to the onset of the dark phase. In the wild, fish preferred structurally complex habitats during the day, but dispersed toward open areas at night, presumably to forage and interact. Nocturnal increase of movement range coincided with diel declines in DO concentration to extremely low levels. The fact that fish showed pronounced nocturnal activity patterns in the laboratory and in the open areas of their habitat, but not under floating vegetation, indicates that light intensity exerts a direct effect on their activity. We hypothesize that being dark-active and tolerant to hypoxia increases the resistance of these fish against predators. This study establishes a new technology to record EODs in the field and provides a window into the largely unknown behavior of mormyrids in their natural habitat.Peer Reviewe
