Creating and Sharing Fedora Installation Package for Ubuntu

This poster proposal presents an open source strategy to help address some of these challenges. The NSF funded NSDL Materials Digital Library Pathway (MatDL) offers a Fedora-based open repository and is moving toward using the Ubuntu distribution of Linux on all of its servers to capitalize on the advantages of Ubuntu. However, currently there is no easy way to implement Ubuntu with Fedora-based repositories. This poster describes MatDL's efforts to co-develop and host a Fedora installation package for Ubuntu.The Materials Digital Library Pathway (DUE-0532831) is supported by the National Science Foundation
ZEB1 protects skeletal muscle from damage and is required for its regeneration
The mechanisms linking muscle injury and regeneration are not fully understood. Here we report an unexpected role for ZEB1 regulating inflammatory and repair responses in dystrophic and acutely injured muscles. ZEB1 is upregulated in the undamaged and regenerating myofibers of injured muscles. Compared to wild-type counterparts, Zeb1-deficient injured muscles exhibit enhanced damage that corresponds with a retarded p38-MAPK-dependent transition of their macrophages towards an anti-inflammatory phenotype. Zeb1-deficient injured muscles also display a delayed and poorer regeneration that is accounted by the retarded anti-inflammatory macrophage transition and their intrinsically deficient muscle satellite cells (MuSCs). Macrophages in Zeb1-deficient injured muscles show lower phosphorylation of p38 and its forced activation reverts the enhanced muscle damage and poorer regeneration. MuSCs require ZEB1 to maintain their quiescence, prevent their premature activation following injury, and drive efficient regeneration in dystrophic muscles. These data indicate that ZEB1 protects muscle from damage and is required for its regeneration
Large Scale Structure traced by Molecular Gas at High Redshift
We present observations of redshifted CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) in a field
containing an overdensity of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=5.12. Our
Australia Telescope Compact Array observations were centered between two
spectroscopically-confirmed z=5.12 galaxies. We place upper limits on the
molecular gas masses in these two galaxies of M(H_2) <1.7 x 10^10 M_sun and
<2.9 x 10^9 M_sun (2 sigma), comparable to their stellar masses. We detect an
optically-faint line emitter situated between the two LBGs which we identify as
warm molecular gas at z=5.1245 +/- 0.0001. This source, detected in the CO(2-1)
transition but undetected in CO(1-0), has an integrated line flux of 0.106 +/-
0.012 Jy km/s, yielding an inferred gas mass M(H_2)=(1.9 +/- 0.2) x 10^10
M_sun. Molecular line emitters without detectable counterparts at optical and
infrared wavelengths may be crucial tracers of structure and mass at high

Discovery of a single faint AGN in a large sample of z>5 Lyman break galaxies
As part of a large spectroscopic survey of z>5 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs),
we have identified a single source which is clearly hosting an AGN. Out of a
sample of more than fifty spectroscopically-confirmed R-band dropout galaxies
at z~5 and above, only J104048.6-115550.2 at z=5.44 shows evidence for a high
ionisation-potential emission-line indicating the presence of a hard ionising
continuum from an AGN. Like most objects in our sample the rest-frame-UV
spectrum shows the UV continuum breaking across a Ly_alpha line. Uniquely
within this sample of LBGs, emission from NV is also detected, a clear
signature of AGN photo-ionisation. The object is spatially resolved in HST
imaging. This, and the comparatively high Ly_alpha/NV flux ratio indicates that
the majority of the Ly_alpha (and the UV continuum longward of it) originates
from stellar photo-ionisation, a product of the ongoing starburst in the Lyman
break galaxy. Even without the AGN emission, this object would have been
photometrically-selected and spectroscopically-confirmed as a Lyman break in
our survey. The measured optical flux (I(AB)=26.1) is therefore an upper limit
to that from the AGN and is of order 100 times fainter than the majority of
known quasars at these redshifts. The detection of a single object in our
survey volume is consistent with the best current models of high redshift AGN
luminosity function, providing a substantial fraction of such AGN are found
within luminous starbursting galaxies. We discuss the cosmological implications

ZEB1 imposes a temporary stage-dependent inhibition of muscle gene expression and differentiation via CtBP-mediated transcriptional repression
Skeletal muscle development is orchestrated by the myogenic regulatory factor MyoD, whose activity is blocked in myoblasts by proteins preventing its nuclear translocation and/or binding to G/C-centered E-boxes in target genes. Recent evidence indicates that muscle gene expression is also regulated at the cis level by differential affinity for DNA between MyoD and other E-box binding proteins during myogenesis. MyoD binds to G/C-centered E-boxes, enriched in muscle differentiation genes, in myotubes but not in myoblasts. Here, we used cell-based and in vivo Drosophila, Xenopus laevis, and mouse models to show that ZEB1, a G/C-centered E-box binding transcriptional repressor, imposes a temporary stage-dependent inhibition of muscle gene expression and differentiation via CtBP-mediated transcriptional repression. We found that, contrary to MyoD, ZEB1 binds to G/C-centered E-boxes in muscle differentiation genes at the myoblast stage but not in myotubes. Its knockdown results in precocious expression of muscle differentiation genes and acceleration of myotube formation. Inhibition of muscle genes by ZEB1 occurs via transcriptional repression and involves recruitment of the CtBP corepressor. Lastly, we show that the pattern of gene expression associated with muscle differentiation is accelerated in ZEB1(â/â) mouse embryos. These results set ZEB1 as an important regulator of the temporal pattern of gene expression controlling muscle differentiation
Basal-like grade III invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast: patterns of metastasis and long-term survival.
INTRODUCTION: Cytokeratin (CK) 14, one of several markers expressed in normal myoepithelial/basal cells, is also expressed in a proportion of breast carcinomas. Previous studies have suggested that expression of such 'basal' markers predicts different biological behaviour, with more frequent lung and brain metastases and poorer prognosis than other carcinomas. METHODS: We performed CK14 immunohistochemistry on 443 grade III invasive ductal carcinomas with extended clinical follow-up (mean 116 months), and we correlated CK14 immunopositivity (basal-like phenotype) with clinicopathological criteria. RESULTS: Eighty-eight of 443 (20%) tumours showed CK14 expression. CK14-positive tumours were more likely to be oestrogen receptor-negative (p < 0.0001) and axillary node-negative (p = 0.001) than were CK14-negative cases. CK14-positive cases developed less bone and liver metastases (hazard ratio [HR] 0.49, p = 0.01, and HR 0.53, p = 0.035, respectively) but more frequent brain metastases (HR 1.92, p = 0.051). In patients without metastatic disease, disease-free survival in CK14-positive cases was significantly better than in CK14-negative cases (HR 0.65, p = 0.005). In patients with metastatic disease, however, CK14 positivity was associated with a poorer prognosis (HR 1.84, p = 0.001). The overall survival in CK14-positive and -negative patients was similar at 5 years (60% and 59%, respectively), but the long-term survival was better in CK14-positive patients (HR 0.69, p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that basal-like tumours differ in their biological behaviour from other tumours, with a distinct pattern of metastatic spread. Incidence of adult Huntington's disease in the UK: a UK-based primary care study and a systematic review.
OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of Huntington's disease (HD) recorded in the UK primary care records has increased twofold between 1990 and 2010. This investigation was undertaken to assess whether this might be due to an increased incidence. We have also undertaken a systematic review of published estimates of the incidence of HD. SETTING: Incident patients with a new diagnosis of HD were identified from the primary care records of the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). The systematic review included all published estimates of the incidence of HD in defined populations. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 393 incident cases of HD were identified from the CPRD database between 1990 and 2010 from a total population of 9,282,126 persons. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The incidence of HD per million person-years was estimated. From the systematic review, the extent of heterogeneity of published estimates of the incidence of HD was examined using the I(2) statistic. RESULTS: The data showed that the incidence of HD has remained constant between 1990 and 2010 with an overall rate of 7.2 (95% CI 6.5 to 7.9) per million person-years. The systematic review identified 14 independent estimates of incidence with substantial heterogeneity and consistently lower rates reported in studies from East Asia compared with those from Australia, North America and some--though not all--those from Europe. Differences in incidence estimates did not appear to be explained solely by differences in case ascertainment or diagnostic methods. CONCLUSIONS: The rise in the prevalence of diagnosed HD in the UK, between 1990 and 2010, cannot be attributed to an increase in incidence. Globally, estimates of the incidence of HD show evidence of substantial heterogeneity with consistently lower rates in East Asia and parts of Europe. Modifiers may play an important role in determining the vulnerability of different populations to expansions of the HD allele
Tomographic Separation of Composite Spectra. IX. The Massive Close Binary HD 115071
We present the first orbital elements for the massive close binary, HD
115071, a double-lined spectroscopic binary in a circular orbit with a period
of 2.73135 +/- 0.00003 days. The orbital semiamplitudes indicate a mass ratio
of M_2/M_1 = 0.58 +/- 0.02 and yet the stars have similar luminosities. We used
a Doppler tomography algorithm to reconstruct the individual component optical
spectra, and we applied well known criteria to arrive at classifications of
O9.5 V and B0.2 III for the primary and secondary, respectively. We present
models of the Hipparcos light curve of the ellipsoidal variations caused by the
tidal distortion of the secondary, and the best fit model for a Roche-filling
secondary occurs for an inclination of i = 48.7 +/- 2.1 degrees. The resulting
masses are 11.6 +/- 1.1 and 6.7 +/- 0.7 solar masses for the primary and
secondary, respectively, so that both stars are very overluminous for their
mass. The system is one of only a few known semi-detached, Algol-type binaries
that contain O-stars. We suggest that the binary has recently emerged from
extensive mass transfer (possibly through a delayed contact and common envelope
