    Polyphenol Intake in Pregnant Women on Gestational Diabetes Risk and Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Offspring: A Systematic Review

    The intake of foods containing polyphenols can have a protective role to avoid comorbidities during pregnancy and, at the same time, promote transgenerational health. This review aims to describe the effect of polyphenol intake through supplements or polyphenol-rich foods during pregnancy on the incidence and evolution of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), as well as the link with the neurodevelopment of the fetus. Using PRISMA procedures, a systematic review was conducted by searching in biomedical databases (PubMed, Cinahl and Scopus) from January to June 2022. Full articles were screened (n = 419) and critically appraised. Fourteen studies were selected and were divided into two different thematic blocks considering (i) the effect of polyphenols in GDM and (ii) the effect of GDM to mental disorders in the offspring. A positive relationship was observed between the intake of polyphenols and the prevention and control of cardiometabolic complications during pregnancy, such as GDM, which could be related to thwarted inflammatory and oxidative processes, as well as neuronal factors. GDM is related to a greater risk of suffering from diseases related to neurodevelopment, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder and learning disorder. Further clinical research on the molecule protective mechanism of polyphenols on pregnant women is required to understand the transgenerational impact on fetal neurodevelopment

    In vitro metabolomic approaches to investigating the potential biological effects of phenolic compounds: an update

    Dietary phenolic compounds (PCs) have been receiving interest for their presumed roles in disease prevention. However, there is a lack of studies on the underlying molecular mechanisms. In this regard, in vitro metabolomic approaches are suitable for the investigation of the molecular changes in response to PC exposure. Up to date, the biological effects of PCs have only been examined for PCs from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), olive oil, and resveratrol using cell-based metabolomic approach, although transcriptomic and/or proteomic studies have also been conducted in the same in vitro cell experiment in some cases. Our integral analysis of the reviewed studies suggest that PCs may be involved not only in basic cellular processes or macro- and micro-nutrient metabolism, but also in specific metabolic pathways that have been thoroughly investigated. These modulated pathways could have a clinical impact on neurodegenerative diseases, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. In conclusion, the in vitro metabolomic approaches provide additional information of the molecular mechanisms involved in disease risk reduction of dietary PCs. In order to elucidate the mechanisms of action of PCs, more metabolomic cell-based studies are needed and testing the physiological conjugated forms of PCs in these cell systems could be of special interest.This work was partially supported by grants (Grant Nos.     Evaluación y tutorización de la práctica reflexiva en los proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio mediante el uso de una rúbrica

    El proceso de tutorización en los proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio se fundamenta en el modelo de aprendizaje experiencial que subraya que el valor formativo de una experiencia depende de la riqueza de la situación y de la validez de las herramientas y estrategias para generar la reflexión. Estas estrategias han de permitir, además de diseñar conjuntamente la acción e implementarla, construir su significado, problematizarla, extraer generalizaciones, señalar especificidades y establecer relaciones, preparando al estudiante para la siguiente situación de experiencia. Responde así a una concepción participativa, colaborativa, cíclica y progresiva del aprendizaje. Por lo tanto, es de vital interés potenciar la reflexión de los estudiantes y hacerlo favoreciendo la construcción de conocimiento, tanto sobre contenidos académicos, como sobre la significación personal y social de la experiencia; ampliando la zona de innovación, rescatando conocimientos previos y aprendizajes tácitos para reelaborarlos e integrando los diferentes tipos de saberes en un aprendizaje profundo y holístico. El seguimiento y la tutorización de los proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio que se desarrollan desde la Oficina de Aprendizaje-Servicio de la Facultad de Educación de la Universidad de Barcelona se fundamenta en la elaboración de un diario reflexivo que el estudiante ha de llevar a cabo sobre su experiencia. El diario es una herramienta formativa personal que el estudiante elabora de manera individual. Estas páginas tienen por objetivo presentar una rúbrica para la mejora de la evaluación y la tutorización de los diarios reflexivos en los proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio. La rúbrica nace de la necesidad de mejorar y unificar los criterios de acompañamiento del proceso reflexivo y su nivel de profundización. El transcurso de su elaboración y validación ha permitido identificar las diferentes dimensiones de la reflexión en su concreción en un diario reflexivo -aspectos básicos, descripción, análisis y proyección-, así como también los ítems de evaluación para el profesorado y las orientaciones didácticas para el estudiante

    Determinants of HDL Cholesterol Efflux Capacity after Virgin Olive Oil Ingestion: Interrelationships with Fluidity of HDL Monolayer

    Scope: Cholesterol efflux capacity of HDL (CEC) is inversely associated with cardiovascular risk. HDL composition, fluidity, oxidation, and size are related with CEC. We aimed to assess which HDL parameters were CEC determinants after virgin olive oil (VOO) ingestion. Methods and results: Post‐hoc analyses from the VOHF study, a crossover intervention with three types of VOO. We assessed the relationship of 3‐week changes in HDL‐related variables after intervention periods with independence of the type of VOO. After univariate analyses, mixed linear models were fitted with variables related with CEC and fluidity. Fluidity and Apolipoprotein (Apo)A‐I content in HDL was directly associated, and HDL oxidative status inversely, with CEC. A reduction in free cholesterol, an increase in triglycerides in HDL, and a decrease in small HDL particle number or an increase in HDL mean size, were associated to HDL fluidity. Conclusions: HDL fluidity, ApoA‐I concentration, and oxidative status are major determinants for CEC after VOO. The impact on CEC of changes in free cholesterol and triglycerides in HDL, and those of small HDL or HDL mean size, could be mechanistically linked through HDL fluidity. Our work points out novel therapeutic targets to improve HDL functionality in humans through nutritional or pharmacological interventions.Fil: Fernández Castillejo, Sara.
