Specific heat of single crystal MgB_2: a two-band superconductor with two different anisotropies

Heat-capacity measurements of a 39 microgramm MgB_2 single crystal in fields up to 14 T and below 3 K allow the determination of the low-temperature linear term of the specific heat, its field dependence and its anisotropy. Our results are compatible with two-band superconductivity, the band carrying the small gap being isotropic, that carrying the large gap having an anisotropy of ~ 5. Three different upper critical fields are thus needed to describe the superconducting state of MgB2.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures - V2: Bibliography updated and some typo corrected. BACKGROUND Little is known about the long-term social and professional outcomes in adults after pediatric kidney replacement therapy (KRT). In this study, we described social and professional outcomes of adults after kidney failure during childhood and compared these outcomes with the general population. METHODS We sent a questionnaire to 143 individuals registered in the Swiss Pediatric Renal Registry (SPRR) with KRT starting before the age of 18 years. In the questionnaire, we assessed social (partner relationship, living situation, having children) and professional (education, employment) outcomes. Logistic regression models adjusted for age at study and sex were used to compare outcomes with a representative sample of the Swiss general population and to identify socio-demographic and clinical characteristics associated with adverse outcomes. RESULTS Our study included 80 patients (response rate 56%) with a mean age of 39 years (range 19-63). Compared to the general population, study participants were more likely to not have a partner (OR = 3.7, 95%CI 2.3-5.9), live alone (OR = 2.5, 95%CI 1.5-4.1), not have children (OR = 6.8, 95%CI 3.3-14.0), and be unemployed (OR = 3.9, 95%CI 1.8-8.6). No differences were found for educational achievement (p = 0.876). Participants on dialysis at time of study were more often unemployed compared to transplanted participants (OR = 5.0, 95%CI 1.2-21.4) and participants with > 1 kidney transplantation more often had a lower education (OR = 3.2, 95%CI 1.0-10.2). CONCLUSIONS Adults after pediatric kidney failure are at risk to experience adverse social and professional outcomes. Increased awareness among healthcare professionals and additional psycho-social support could contribute to mitigate those risks. BACKGROUND Little is known about health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults after kidney failure during childhood. In this study, we analyzed HRQoL of adults after pediatric kidney failure in Switzerland and investigated socio-demographic and clinical factors associated with HRQoL. METHODS In this cohort study, we sent questionnaires to 143 eligible patients registered in the Swiss Pediatric Renal Registry with continuous kidney replacement therapy starting before the age of 18 years. We assessed HRQoL using the Short-Form 36 version 1, compared HRQoL scores between our sample and the Swiss general population, and used linear regression models to examine socio-demographic and clinical factors associated with HRQoL. RESULTS We included 79 patients (response rate 55%) with a mean age of 38.6 years (range 19.4-63.1). Compared to the general population, HRQoL scores were lower for physical functioning (- 12.43, p < 0.001), role physical (- 13.85, p = 0.001), general health (- 14.42, p < 0.001), vitality (- 4.98, p = 0.035), and physical HRQoL (- 6.11, p < 0.001), but we found no difference in mental HRQoL (- 0.13, p = 0.932). The socio-demographic factors-lower education, unemployment, and not being in a relationship-were associated with lower HRQoL. The only clinical factor associated with HRQoL was the type of kidney disease. Patients with acquired kidney diseases had lower mental HRQoL than patients with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (- 11.4, p = 0.007) or monogenetic hereditary diseases (- 9.5, p = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS Adults after pediatric kidney failure in Switzerland have lower physical, but similar mental HRQoL compared to the general population. Subgroups may require special attention with regard to their HRQoL. A higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available as Supplementary information

Dermocystidiosis induced by the parasite Dermocystidium sp. in the Paracheirodon axelrodi

    Get PDF
The Rio Negro floodplain (tributary of the Amazon River) is a natural habitat of the cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi. In home aquaria, this species has high vulnerability to superficial infetions and is affected by the protist Dermocystidium. Protist cysts were located in the dermis causing lesions reaching in the epidermis. We observed that a few weeks after the introduction of new wild ornamental fish (mostly Hemigrammus sp. or Hyphessobrycon sp.) into established home aquaria, the cardinal tetra fish became infected, suggesting that the new fish could have acted as carriers.Fil: Plaul, Silvia Elena. Cell surface antigens in renal tumour cells: detection by immunoluminescence and enzymatic analysis

    Get PDF
Two renal cell carcinoma cell lines (49RC 43STR and 75RC 2STR) were characterized by detection of the cell surface proteins: CD44(var), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its receptor and aminopeptidase N (APN). To detect their localization the immunoluminescent technique was used. In addition, the enzyme activity of uPA and APN was investigated in cell suspensions as well as in monolayers. The latter procedure was more advantageous since the additional use of HPLC permits a single registration of the fluorescent hydrolysis-product AMC (7-amino-4-methylcoumarin) without interference by cellular autofluorescence or non-reacted fluorescent substrate. Unlike 75RC 2STR, the cell line 49RC 43STR expressed high levels of uPA and APN. Contrary to that the cell line 75RC 2STR expressed high levels of ICAM-1 and CD44(v6), whereas 49RC 43STR showed a low level of ICAM-1 and no distinct light signal with anti-CD44(v6). The uPA activity was measured directly as well as indirectly (via plasmin) with the substrate Z-Gly-Gly-Arg-AMC. Both activator and plasmin activity were inhibited by D-Val-Phe-Lys-CMK and phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride. The anti-catalytic antibody to uPA and that to uPA receptor were found to be inhibiting the uPA activity in a concentration-dependent manner. APN activity was assayed using alanine-p-nitroanilide. Peptidase activity was effectively inhibited by 1,10-phenanthroline and partly inhibited by ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaignhttp://www.bjcancer.co

Tunneling properties at the interface between superconducting Sr2RuO4 and a Ru micro-inclusion

We have investigated the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the tunneling spectra of the eutectic system Sr2RuO4-Ru. Electric contacts to individual Ru lamellae embedded in Sr2RuO4 enable the tunneling spectra at the interface between ruthenate and a Ru microinclusion to be measured. A zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) was observed in the bias voltage dependence of the differential conductance, suggesting that Andreev bound states are present at the interface. The ZBCP starts to appear at a temperature well below the superconducting transition temperature. The onset magnetic field of the ZBCP is also considerably smaller than the upper critical field when the magnetic field is parallel to the ab-plane. We propose that the difference between the onset of the ZBCP and the onset of superconductivity can be understood in terms of the existence of the single-component state predicted by Sigrist and Monien.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in J.
