Need for a subtropical wind profiling system

    Get PDF
The purpose is to point out the need for, and the benefit that can be derived from, a national wind profiling facility located in the subtropics. At present no such facility exists. There are several advantages associated with a low-latitude location. The first is that wave motions and large-scale circulations unique to the tropics can be studied. The second is that the relatively steady mean flows in the subtropical belt may provide a cleaner environment for studies of waves common at all latitudes. Researchers suggest the Arecibo Observatory as an ideal site for a wind profiling facility since the land and much of the computing, technical, and scientific support is already available

A dynamical and kinematical model of the Galactic stellar halo and possible implications for galaxy formation scenarios

We re-analyse the kinematics of the system of blue horizontal branch field (BHBF) stars in the Galactic halo (in particular the outer halo), fitting the kinematics with the model of radial and tangential velocity dispersions in the halo as a function of galactocentric distance r proposed by Sommer-Larsen, Flynn & Christensen (1994), using a much larger sample (almost 700) of BHBF stars. The basic result is that the character of the stellar halo velocity ellipsoid changes markedly from radial anisotropy at the sun to tangential anisotropy in the outer parts of the Galactic halo (r greater than approx 20 kpc). Specifically, the radial component of the stellar halo's velocity ellipsoid decreases fairly rapidly beyond the solar circle, from approx 140 +/- 10 km/s at the sun, to an asymptotic value of 89 +/- 19 km/s at large r. The rapid decrease in the radial velocity dispersion is matched by an increase in the tangential velocity dispersion, with increasing r. Our results may indicate that the Galaxy formed hierarchically (partly or fully) through merging of smaller subsystems - the 'bottom-up' galaxy formation scenario, which for quite a while has been favoured by most theorists and recently also has been given some observational credibility by HST observations of a potential group of small galaxies, at high redshift, possibly in the process of merging to a larger galaxy (Pascarelle et al 1996).Comment: Latex, 16 pages. 2 postscript figures. Relative Values of Feed Proteins for Dairy Cows

    Get PDF
Will a given amount of the protein of oil meal, for example, be of equal value in supplying the needs of a milk cow as will the same amount of the protein of some other feed? To find a satisfactory answer to the above question, asked by many dairymen, has been the aim of the present investigation as reported in this bulletin. It has long been known that the protein from different sources varied in its ability to supply the protein demands of an animal. Numerous investigations have dealt with a study of the so-called pure proteins which have been found to vary in their relative values. Comparatively few· of these investigations have dealt with a study of protein as it occurs and is fed in the ordinary feeds. Even fewer have concerned themselves with this protein problem as regards animals producing milk. The present investigation deals with the relative value of the protein of common feeds in supplying the protein requirements of cows producing milk

Conditional Lower Bounds for Space/Time Tradeoffs

In recent years much effort has been concentrated towards achieving polynomial time lower bounds on algorithms for solving various well-known problems. A useful technique for showing such lower bounds is to prove them conditionally based on well-studied hardness assumptions such as 3SUM, APSP, SETH, etc. This line of research helps to obtain a better understanding of the complexity inside P. A related question asks to prove conditional space lower bounds on data structures that are constructed to solve certain algorithmic tasks after an initial preprocessing stage. This question received little attention in previous research even though it has potential strong impact. In this paper we address this question and show that surprisingly many of the well-studied hard problems that are known to have conditional polynomial time lower bounds are also hard when concerning space. This hardness is shown as a tradeoff between the space consumed by the data structure and the time needed to answer queries. The tradeoff may be either smooth or admit one or more singularity points. We reveal interesting connections between different space hardness conjectures and present matching upper bounds. We also apply these hardness conjectures to both static and dynamic problems and prove their conditional space hardness. We believe that this novel framework of polynomial space conjectures can play an important role in expressing polynomial space lower bounds of many important algorithmic problems. Moreover, it seems that it can also help in achieving a better understanding of the hardness of their corresponding problems in terms of time

Hole Spin Coherence in a Ge/Si Heterostructure Nanowire

    Get PDF
Relaxation and dephasing of hole spins are measured in a gate-defined Ge/Si nanowire double quantum dot using a fast pulsed-gate method and dispersive readout. An inhomogeneous dephasing time T20.18 μsT_2^* \sim 0.18~\mathrm{\mu s} exceeds corresponding measurements in III-V semiconductors by more than an order of magnitude, as expected for predominately nuclear-spin-free materials. Dephasing is observed to be exponential in time, indicating the presence of a broadband noise source, rather than Gaussian, previously seen in systems with nuclear-spin-dominated dephasing.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

Coupled Magnetic Excitations in Single Crystal PrBa2Cu3O6.2

The dispersion of the low-energy magnetic excitations of the Pr sublattice in PrBa2Cu3O6.2 is determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal. The dispersion, which shows the effect of interactions with the Cu spin-waves, is well described by a model of the coupled Cu-Pr magnetic system. This enables values for the principal exchange constants to be determined, which suggest that both Pr-Pr and Cu-Pr interactions are important in producing the anomalously high ordering temperature of the Pr sublattice. Measurements of the Cu optic spin wave mode show that the inter-layer Cu-Cu exchange is significantly lower than in YBa2Cu3O6.2.Comment: To be published Phys. Rev. Let

Gyrating Strings: A new instability of black strings?

A thermodynamic argument is presented suggesting that near-extremal spinning D1-D5-P black strings become unstable when their angular momentum exceeds Jcrit=3Q1Q5/22J_{crit} = {3Q_1Q_5}/2\sqrt{2}. In contrast, the dimensionally reduced black holes are thermodynamically stable. The proposed instability involves a phase in which the spin angular momentum above JcritJ_{crit} is transferred to gyration of the string in space; i.e., to orbital angular momentum of parts of the string about the mean location in space. Thus the string becomes a rotating helical coil. We note that an instability of this form would yield a counter-example to the Gubser-Mitra conjecture, which proposes a particular link between dynamic black string instabilities and the thermodynamics of black strings. There may also be other instabilities associated with radiation modes of various fields. Our arguments also apply to the D-brane bound states associated with these black strings in weakly coupled string theory.Comment: 6 pages, revtex4, zero of Hessian noted, references adde

Strings Propagating in the 2+1 Dimensional Black Hole Anti de Sitter Spacetime

We study the string propagation in the 2+1 black hole anti de Sitter background (2+1 BH-ADS). We find the first and second order fluctuations around the string center of mass and obtain the expression for the string mass. The string motion is stable, all fluctuations oscillate with real frequencies and are bounded, even at r=0.r=0. We compare with the string motion in the ordinary black hole anti de Sitter spacetime, and in the black string background, where string instabilities develop and the fluctuations blow up at r=0.r=0. We find the exact general solution for the circular string motion in all these backgrounds, it is given closely and completely in terms of elliptic functions. For the non-rotating black hole backgrounds the circular strings have a maximal bounded size rm,r_m, they contract and collapse into r=0.r=0. No indefinitely growing strings, neither multi-string solutions are present in these backgrounds. In rotating spacetimes, both the 2+1 BH-ADS and the ordinary Kerr-ADS, the presence of angular momentum prevents the string from collapsing into r=0.r=0. The circular string motion is also completely solved in the black hole de Sitter spacetime and in the black string background (dual of the 2+1 BH-ADS spacetime), in which expanding unbounded strings and multi-string solutions appear.Comment: Latex, 54 pages + 2 tables and 4 figures (not included).
