Explanatory Factors for Public Transportation Financing Needs in Spain

    Get PDF
Public transport financing in Spain has generated interest due to the absence of a governing regulatory framework. There is a need for rules that help allocate public subsidies to guarantee the system’s financial sustainability. Without explicit regulation, the current system for assigning and distributing public funding among Spanish cities has become unbalanced. Our goal is to identify the principal factors that explain why urban transport services in different cities require varying levels of public financing. Our results show that variables such as the “passengers,” “number of vehicles,” “number of employees,” “autonomous community deficit”, and “population density” are influencing factors for the needs of public subsidies. Eye placement bias is remarkably robust

    Get PDF
When drawing faces, people show a systematic bias of placing the eyes higher up the head than they are placed in reality. This study investigated the development of this phenomenon while removing the potential confound of drawing ability. Participants (N = 124) in three age groups (3–5 yo, 10–11 yo, and adults) reconstructed two foam faces: one from observation and one from memory. The high eye placement bias was remarkably robust with mean eye placement in every condition significantly higher than the original faces. The same bias was not shown for mouth placement. Eye placement was highest for the youngest participants and for the memory conditions. The results suggest that an eye placement bias is not caused by the motor skill demands required for drawing and lend evidence to the suggestion that an eye placement bias is caused by perceptual and decision-making processes

From static to Vaidya solutions in scalar tensor theories

We consider some classes of Horndeski theories in four dimensions for which a certain combination of the Einstein equations within a spherical ansatz splits into two distinct branches. Recently, for these theories, some integrability and compatibility conditions have been established which have made it possible to obtain black hole solutions depending on a single integration constant identified as the mass. Here, we will show that these compatibility conditions can be generalized to accommodate a time dependence by promoting the constant mass to an arbitrary function of the retarded (advanced) time. As a direct consequence, we prove that all the static black hole solutions can be naturally promoted to non static Vaidya-like solutions. We extend this study in arbitrary higher dimensions where the pure gravity part is now described by the Lovelock theory and, where the scalar field action enjoyed the conformal invariance. For these theories, the splitting in two branches is also effective, and we show that their known static black hole solutions can as well be promoted to Vaidya-like solutions.Comment: 7 page

In the Chilean context, classrooms tend to have a vertical distribution of seats and desks, commonly known as rows. This action research aims to investigate the effects of changing this distribution from rows to separate tables in students’ participation in speaking activities in efl lessons. This study was carried out over a month and it consisted of two phases: the first, under the orderly rows, and the second, under the separate-table seating arrangement. Each phase was recorded and a sample of students was interviewed for the analysis of their perception of the two different seating arrangements and their participation in classes. The results showed that separate tables enhance interaction among learners, who had a positive attitude towards the new organization and seemed intrinsically motivated to participate in efl lessons. However, Spanish was mostly used. Nonetheless, the participants cherished the opportunity to interact with their classmates in a relaxed, inviting environment.

Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is an increasingly common endocrine disorder. Most patients with PHPT do not have disease-specific symptoms. The management of these patients has been widely debated. Recent studies have shown the importance of following up asymptomatic patients in order to reduce co-morbidity. However, there are conflicting opinions as to medical management. The aim of our study was to compare the outcome of PHPT patients on antiresorptive therapy vs. observation only.Material and methods: We longitudinally evaluated 157 PHPT patients (126 females) aged 22–90 years. Patients who did not undergo surgery were divided into two groups: those on anti-resorptive therapy (N = 52), and those without any treatment (N = 37). Patients who were disease-free after surgery (N = 50) served as controls. Results: The values of serum calcium (S-Ca), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and indices of bone metabolism did not differ significantly among the three groups of subjects. No differences in 25(OH)-vitamin D levels were noted. Bone mineral density (BMD) was not significantly different at the spinal level. Finally, we found no evidence of an effect of medical treatment on quality of life (QoL). However, QoL significantly improved in the surgery group after parathyroidectomy (PTX).Conclusions: This study provided up-to-date information in terms of biochemical progression on the natural history of PHPT patients. No significant differences emerged between anti-resorptive therapy and observation only. It is not yet possible to assess the effect of pharmacological treatments on QoL in statistical terms. (Endokrynol Pol 2014; 65 (6): 456–463

Effect of equivalence ratio fluctuations on planar detonation discontinuities

    Get PDF
We propose a linear asymptotic theory to describe the propagation of planar detonation fronts through heterogeneous mixtures of reactive gases consisting of random fluctuations in the fuel mass fraction. The analysis starts with the derivation of the transfer functions that relate the upstream fuel mass fraction inhomogeneities with the burnt-gas perturbations via normal mode analysis. These results are then used in a Fourier analysis of a detonation wave interacting with two- and three-dimensional isotropic heterogeneous fields. This yields integral formulae for the turbulent kinetic energy, sonic energy and averaged vorticity and entropy production rates. Second-order corrections for the turbulent Rankine-Hugoniot conditions are also obtained, along with analytical expressions for the deviation of the detonation velocity with respect to that of the equivalent homogeneous mixture. Upstream inhomogeneities are found to speed up the detonation front in the vast majority of scenarios studied, with a velocity amplification factor that depends on the properties of the fuel-air mixture, particularly on the variation of the density and the heat release with the fuel mass fraction.Work produced with the support of a 2019 Leonardo Grant for Researchers and Cultural Creators, BBVA Foundation and project PID2019-108592RB-C41 (MICINN/FEDER, UE).
