    Transformations and Remembrances in the Digital Game We Sing for Healing

    Digital games, with their capacity for expression and facilitating experience through code, design, art, and audio, offer spaces for Indigenous creatives to contribute to Gerald Vizenor’s characterization of survivance as an active sense of Native presence. Indigenous digital games can be acts of survivance both in the ways they are created as well as the resulting designs. We Sing for Healing is an experiment in developing an Indigenous digital game during limited Internet access that resulted in a musical choose-your-own adventure text game with design, art, and code by Anishinaabe, MĂ©tis, and Irish game developer Elizabeth LaPensĂ©e alongside music by Peguis First Nation mix artist Exquisite Ghost. The non-linear gameplay expresses traditional storytelling patterns while enabling players to poetically travel in, through, and around traditional teachings. The design uses listening, choosing, and revisiting to reinforce what is best described as a non-linear loopular journey

    Generative Generations: Adapting Culturally Rooted Science Ideas to Video Game Design

    Generative Generations is a workshop kit to facilitate Indigenous youth in designing games that include culturally rooted science ideas. As an extension of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM), the workshop kit interweaves Indigenous pedagogical practices with paper game prototyping to support engaging, hands-on, collaborative, and culturally relevant ideation of games. During a pilot study held during a summer camp with the Indigenous Youth Empowerment Program, youth integrated their own culturally rooted science ideas inspired by prompts from the kit. The pilot study demonstrated a need for additional support in expanding knowledge, which informs future modifications to the workshop kit

    A comparison of the mechanical behaviour of self-piercing riveted and resistance spot welded aluminium sheets for the automotive industry

    The increased application of lightweight materials, such as aluminium has initiated many investigations into new joining techniques for aluminium alloys. The resistance spot welding (RSW) concept for aluminium has always attracted many researchers from different organizations. Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is the major production process used to join aluminium sheet body structures for the automotive industry. The research team at the University of Warwick has investigated these two major joining technologies for aluminium assembly. The paper reported here gives an in depth comparison of the mechanical behaviour for each joint type under different loading conditions. It covers symmetrical and asymmetrical assembly from thin gauge of 1.0 mm to thick gauge of 3.0 mm. The results suggest that generally RSW can provide similar strength performance to SPR with the exception of T-peel; the energy to maximum load needs be considered ‘case to case’ and is dependent largely on loading conditions and the failure mode particularly with respect to SPR. The spread of results for SPR is generally smaller than for RSW, and the performance of SPR joints improves as the thickness increases

    A Collaborative Children\u27s Literature Book Club for Teacher Candidates

    This paper highlights the two-year journey of an extra-curricular book club for teacher candidates as they explored children’s literature in order to further their teaching practice. Initial themes were confirmed and refined as the journey of the book club concluded after two years. A sociocultural theoretical framework guided this work and considered Cambourne’s (1988) conditions of learning, specifically immersion in texts, as well as the important role of social contexts in developing shared text meanings. A qualitative methodology, drawing on participatory action research (Kemmis & McTaggart, 2005) and taking a case study approach to sharing the case of this collaborative children’s literature book club, was used

    Brain size and brain/intracranial volume ratio in major mental illness

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper summarizes the findings of a long term study addressing the question of how several brain volume measure are related to three major mental illnesses in a Colorado subject group. It reports results obtained from a large N, collected and analyzed by the same laboratory over a multiyear period, with visually guided MRI segmentation being the primary initial analytic tool.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Intracerebral volume (ICV), total brain volume (TBV), ventricular volume (VV), ventricular/brain ratio (VBR), and TBV/ICV ratios were calculated from a total of 224 subject MRIs collected over a period of 13 years. Subject groups included controls (C, N = 89), and patients with schizophrenia (SZ, N = 58), bipolar disorder (BD, N = 51), and schizoaffective disorder (SAD, N = 26).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>ICV, TBV, and VV measures compared favorably with values obtained by other research groups, but in this study did not differ significantly between groups. TBV/ICV ratios were significantly decreased, and VBR increased, in the SZ and BD groups compared to the C group. The SAD group did not differ from C on any measure.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this study TBV/ICV and VBR ratios separated SZ and BD patients from controls. Of interest however, SAD patients did not differ from controls on these measures. The findings suggest that the gross measure of TBV may not reliably differ in the major mental illnesses to a degree useful in diagnosis, likely due to the intrinsic variability of the measures in question; the differences in VBR appear more robust across studies. Differences in some of these findings compared to earlier reports from several laboratories finding significant differences between groups in VV and TBV may relate to phenomenological drift, differences in analytic techniques, and possibly the "file drawer problem".</p
