C-banding, fluorescent staining and NOR location in holokinetic chromosomes of bugs of the Neotropical genus Antiteuchus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Discocephalinae)

    Get PDF
Different cytogenetic techniques including C-banding, base-specific fluorochromes and silver nitrate staining were used to compare the karyotypes of three species of bugs, representatives of the Neotropical genus Antiteuchus, namely A. mixtus, A. sepulcralis and A. macraspis. The species have holokinetic chromosomes which is typical of the Hemiptera, and their diploid chromosome number is 2n = 14 and they have an XX/XY (female/male) sex chromosome system. C-banding revealed telomeric blocks of constitutive heterochromatin in most chromosomes of these three species. In each species, CMA;-positive blocks were observed in the telomeric heterochromatin region of chromosome pair 1. This chromosome pair carried the nucleolar organizer region (NOR), which silver nitrate staining revealed is located in the telomeric heterochromatin. In contrast to the result obtained with CMA3, entire chromosome complement stained homogenously with DAPI, except for the telomeric region of pair 1, which remained unstained.Fil: Lanzone, Cecilia. Orcein staining of spermatocytes was used to study the meiotic behavior of holocentric chromosomes in three member of the genus Antiteuchus (commonly known as stink bugs). We describe and illustrate the karyotype of Antiteuchus mixtus, A. sepulcralis and A. macraspis which were cytogenetically characterized as having a diploid number of 2n = 14 and an XY sex chromosome system showing pre-reductional meiosis for autosomes and post-reductional meiosis for sex chromosomes. These species were also shown to have a long diffuse stage during meiotic prophase I and aberrant harlequin-type meiocytes. The chiasma frequency was also analyzed for two of the three species studied.Fil: Lanzone, Cecilia. Universidade Federal de Pernambuco; Brasil. Do we Need a Political Economy of Surveillance? The Case of the GDPR: A Critical Account of the Norms Governing Cyberspace

    Get PDF
This study examines the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union from a critical perspective. By doing so, it aims to generate a comprehensive account of online surveillance practices for commercial purposes, and how public policy in this field is normatively conceived. In order to untangle the normative elements of this highly contested and complex regulation, which took more than five years to be signed under intense lobbying, this paper concentrates on the topics of Consent, Data Ownership and Profiling. These three interrelated elements constitute the primary sources of power asymmetries in the Web between users and providers of online services. By employing the proposed theoretical perspective of a political economy of surveillance, this paper draws from concepts of Foucauldian panoptic surveillance and of Marxist political economics, in order to draw a picture of current surveillance practices by major, quasi- monopolistic IT corporations such as Google and Facebook. The analysis then tests this framework with regard to the normative stance taken by the GDPR, the first major initiative aimed at regulating cyberspace. Deconstructing regulation in this way helps to understand the normative and ideological lines of action of the EU in the newly emerged policy area of the Common Digital Market

Modified margin convergence: over-under lacing suture technique

    Get PDF
The principle of margin convergence can be applied to rotator cuff repair to enhance the security of fixation by decreasing the mechanical strain at the margins of the tear. We describe a suture technique, over-under lacing, that reproduces the same margin convergence, with equal tissue tension across the entire surface area of the cuff. A consecutive series of patients affected by massive U-shaped rotator cuff tears were treated by this repair technique. Preoperative diagnosis, tear assessment, and grading of fatty infiltration of the cuff muscles were based on arthro-computed tomography evaluation. The technique passes 2 sutures from the medial to lateral margin of the tear, with a knotless suture anchor for tendon-to-bone fixation. The proposed technique seems to reduce tensile strain on the repaired tendon, can reconstruct the rotator cuff cable, and can attain the balanced pull of the tendon in a medial-to-lateral fashion. The over-under lacing suture technique is both simple and reproducible. This technique may achieve the goals of margin convergence with satisfactory preliminary clinical results for patients with massive rotator cuff tears

Path Simulations of the LINAC2 Transfer Line

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the transverse emittance growth in a beam line in presence of space charge, dispersion and energy spread. The Transfer Line of the Linac2 has been taken as an example, as measurement to confirm might be possible. In the original design, the dispersion has a very low value; the dispersion has been increased varying the quadrupoles between the bending magnets. Finally the bending magnets have been removed, nullifying the dispersion. In order to investigate the influence of the energy spread, the gap voltage and phase have been changed, observing the emittance growth after the BHZ30

Riding the Populist Web: Contextualizing the Five Star Movement (M5S) in Italy

This article focuses on three mechanisms to explain the rise of populist movements across Europe. They are politicization of resentment, exploitation of social cleavages, and polarization of resentment and feelings of non-representation. We conceptualize populism as a strategic power game aiming to transform potential majorities into real ones by creating or reframing social cleavages. Our theoretical model is used to explain the rise of the Five Star Movement (M5S). Beppe Grillo’s M5S gained notoriety on the national political scene in Italy just before the 2013 elections and succeeded in getting nearly 25 percent of the overall vote. Moreover, it was the only political force that was able to attract votes across the different regions in Italy, making it the country’s only truly national party

Populists in power: from Municipalities to (European) Parliament, The case of the Italian Five star Movement

The article focuses on the strategic evolution of the Italian Five Star Movement (Movimento 5 Stelle\u2014M5S). The party was born in 2009 as a local and civic experience and it represents a new example of populism characterized by unprecedented traits. In 2010 the M5S obtained its first representatives during regional elections and in 2012 it achieved its first Major in a big town (Parma, in the heart of Italy)

Who Did Participate in the Online Primary Elections of the Five Star Movement (M5S) in Italy? Causes, Features and Effects of the Selection Process

    Get PDF
This research would analyze causes, characteristics and consequences of online primary elections organized by Five Star Movement (M5s), in December 2012, to select its MPs candidates. In particular, present work considers all the phases of this specific example of candidates selection process. Based on original and empirical data collected by C&LS research team, the work can be divided into four parts: after a general introduction, the article focuses its attention on the rules of the game (selectorate and candidacy rules) and measures the inclusion/exclusion level of the process, according to the scheme used by Reuven Hazan. So, this electoral study deals with the participation level and the voting distribution: how many people took place in the candidates selection process? How much “attractive” was the primary election and what was the level of competitiveness among candidates? The next part underlines the socio-graphical characteristics of the aspires MPs: who were the candidates and among these, what was the best candidates’ profile? What were the variables that took some candidates to a successful results and other candidates to the in-success? Finally, what are the consequences of this specific case of primary elections
