    A Systematic Review of Bullying Prevention Programs in Schools

    Bullying prevention programs have been shown to be generally effective in reducing bullying and victimization. Because it is crucial for social workers to understand the impact of bullying prevention programs, a systematic review was conducted for this project to identify which programs have been found to be successful. A total of 518 reports concerned with bullying prevention were found, and 33 were assessed for eligibility. Of these reports, fifteen were included in this review. All articles from 1993 up to 2014 were hand-searched, and were in 9 electronic databases. Through a review of fifteen articles that acknowledged bullying prevention, numerous similarities, differences, as well as future questions were identified. Populations served through these programs included individual adolescents, teachers, and parents. No two articles presented a bullying prevention program identical to another, though numerous aspects were replicated in a number of the articles. All of the research articles reviewed identified some degree of positive effects in a bullying prevention programs. Findings indicate that bullying prevention programs work, as the combined effect of the various programs and implementations are shown to decrease bullying and victimization by an average of 17-23 percent

    Childhood Obesity

    Childhood obesity is a serious global health problem. It begins early in life during the preschool years, and, for many, the obesity is carried forward into later childhood and adult life. Once established, obesity is difficult to reverse and is associated with poorer health outcomes in the short and long term. Tackling obesity in childhood is important to reduce life-long risk and protect health. However, service provision is lacking in the UK and other countries. Interventions that are successful in the prevention and management of childhood obesity are urgently needed. These should ideally be evidence-based and target the youngest children and their families. Multicomponent lifestyle programmes and strategies can be effective in reducing childhood obesity. For greatest success, these should be tailored to individual family needs

    The quasi-optical analysis of Bessel beams in the far infrared

    We discuss the Gaussian beam mode analysis of Bessel beams, eigen-solutions of the wave-equation in cylindrical polar coordinates which neither change form nor spread out as they propagate. Approximate, limited diffraction finite aperture, pseudo-Bessel beams having intense on-axis spots with large depths of field can be produced experimentally in the far infrared by using plastic conical lenses, known as axicons. We illustrate the physical insight provided by Gaussian beam mode analysis of such systems. Such pseudo-Bessel beams can be usefully approximated by high-order Gaussian–Laguerre modes, which have similar propagation characteristics. The size of the on-axis spot produced by an axicon, and its depth of focus, can be estimated from a single best-fit high-order Gaussian–Laguerre mode, and a more detailed description of behaviour can be achieved by adding a few additional modes of neighbouring orders. The strength of Gaussian beam mode analysis is that it is straightforward to model the propagation of Bessel beams through complex systems of long wavelength optical components, such as apertures, mirrors, and lenses. We report the experimental generation and measurement of a 0.1 THz Bessel beam, and show that useful performance is possible for an axicon having a scale size just one order of magnitude greater than the wavelength. This work confirms the technical feasibility of designing and building long-wavelength optical systems based on Bessel beams

    The composition and friction-reducing properties of leaf layers

    Every autumn rail networks across the world suffer delays, accidents and schedule changes due to low friction problems caused by leaves landing on the rails. These leaves form a layer that can reduce the friction between the wheel and the rail to a similar level as that between ice and an ice-skate (μ=0.01–0.05). Previous works have generated several hypotheses for the chemical reactions and low friction mechanism associated with these layers. In this work, the reaction between an aqueous extract of sycamore leaves and metallic iron is investigated. This reaction has been shown to produce a black precipitate, which matches field observations of leaf layers, while friction tests with these extracts produce characteristic ultra low friction. The reaction is investigated through FTIR, XPS, CHNS and ICP-MS analysis as well as wet chemical testing. The impact of the reaction on friction is investigated through three rounds of tribological testing. The results indicate that the black precipitate produced is iron tannate, formed by complexation of tannins with dissolved iron ions. Friction testing showed that eliminating tannins from the leaf extract resulted in a significant increase in the friction coefficient compared with the control

    Understanding friction mechanisms of Si-DLC/steel interfaces under aqueous lubrication

    A key driver in current research on lubricant formulation is the need to move away from older technology that is highly reliant on resources derived from industries associated with high carbon dioxide emissions. In this paper, the adoption of water based (or aqueous) lubrication is explored. This is in direct contrast with most lubricated systems that rely on oil or other petroleum products. In nature, most known biological systems employ aqueous lubrication for tribological contacts, such as those found in cartilage and more widely in mammalian joints including hips and knees giving friction coefficients as low as μ < 0.002. This is achieved very effectively without the presence of an oil or grease as a base lubricant. In most engineering applications, however, oils and greases are used to achieve desired low friction levels. While effective, this comes with the associated higher costs and carbon footprint of using petroleum derived products. In recent years, certain engineering applications have shifted to aqueous lubrication, a notable example of which is stern tube bearings in maritime applications. These are typically low pressure contacts though. Depending on speed of travel this can range from 100–400 MPa. The research detailed in this paper explores the viability of high pressure contacts lubricated with novel aqueous packages and what effects this shift may have on friction and wear profiles of the system. The work reported herein demonstrates that with some modifications, effective lubrication can be achieved using aqueous lubricant packages

    Quasi-optical multiplexing using reflection phase gratings

    Heterodyne array receiver systems for both ground based and satellite telescope facilities are now becoming feasible for imaging in the submillimetre/terahertz regions of the EM spectrum. Phase gratings can be usefully employed as high efficiency passive multiplexing devices in the local oscillator (LO) injection chain of such receivers, ensuring that each element of the array is adequately biased and that the reflected LO power level at the array is minimised. For the wavelengths of interest both transmission and reflection gratings can be manufactured by milling an appropriate pattern of slots into the surface(s) of a suitable material. Thus, the required phase modulation is produced by the resulting pattern of varying optical path lengths suffered by the incident wave-front. We report on work we are undertaking to develop all reflection quasi-optical multiplexing systems so as to reduce reflection losses at the grating and minimise the number of surfaces that can contribute to standing wave effects in the optical system. As part of this endeavour we have also developed a quasi-optical technique for analysing the inevitable degradation due to multiple reflections on transmission grating design. This analysis is based on the Gaussian beam mode technique, and a further application of this technique allows one to assess tolerance limitations on the grating

    Field trials of a methodology for locomotive brake testing to assess friction enhancement in the wheel/rail interface using a representative leaf layer

    There are two options for testing the performance of rail vehicles and the application of material to the wheel/rail interface to influence friction, and therefore braking performance, in a low adhesion environment: laboratory work which is not representative of conditions in the field, and expensive track tests using fully instrumented modern vehicles largely using low adhesion simulants that are not representative of those that occur in the real world and usually applied over great lengths of track. This paper presents a third option: low-cost track tests. We determined the minimum of equipment and resources needed to produce low adhesion using a method more representative on Autumn conditions on rail and monitor the performance of rail vehicles when braking on it. This was mainly targeted at use for testing products applied to the wheel/rail interface to enhance traction, hence the need for real low adhesion causes. We present the methodology that we have developed, and some initial results showing that using it we can generate a low adhesion scenario when braking from 10 mph. This can be used to develop mitigation solutions for low adhesion in a more cost effective manner
