    An iterative landscape planning process for sustaining flood regulation in the Ci Kapundung upper water catchment area, Bandung Basin, Indonesia

    Simulations and modelling are often used in many studies to assess and visualise the effects of landscape changes on environment. However, only a few studies have been conducted to assess landscape interventions to sustain ecosystem services, including hydrological processes. This paper presents an iterative and interactive process to generate landscape planning for the Ci Kapundung upper water catchment area, Bandung Basin, Indonesia, based on two development scenarios. The land change model was coupled with a hydrological model to assess the influence of land cover changes on flood risk in Bandung Basin. The result shows that the overland flow at three observation points is affected by the land cover, topography, and soil properties. Outputs from the iterative hydrologic simulations suggested that conifers could be planted in the proposed river buffers in the case study area to reduce the volume of runoff flowing to the Ci Kapundung River

    Identification of canine papillomavirus type 1 (CPV1) DNA in dogs with cutaneous papillomatosis

    Canine oral papillomavirus (COPV), also known as Canine Papillomavirus type 1 (CPV1), induces papillomas at the mucous membranes of the oral cavity and at the haired skin of dogs. The classification of Papillomavirus (PV) types is based on the L1 capsid protein and nucleotide sequence; so far, 14 CPV types have been described in several countries, but the molecular characterization of CPV in Brazil is lacking. This study investigated the presence of the PV in seven papillomas from four mixed breed dogs from Londrina/PR, Southern Brazil, by partial sequencing of the L1 gene. Seven exophytic cutaneous lesions were surgically removed and processed for histopathological and molecular characterization. Histopathology confirmed the lesions as viral papillomas due to typical histological features. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay using the FAP59 and FAP64 primers targeted the L1 gene followed by sequence analysis of the amplicons identified CPV1 in all evaluated papilloma samples. This study represents the first description of CPV1 DNA associated with canine papillomatosis in Brazil

    Towards a better understanding of fire performance assessment of façade systems: current situation and a proposed new assessment framework

    This manuscript presents tools and data that serve to enable an evaluation of the risk associated with vertical fire spread on buildings. A highly detailed context to cladding fires is described to unveil the complexity and magnitude of the problem and to identify gaps of information. An engineering framework is then developed which delivers required information that fills some of those gaps and that needs to be used towards achieving quantified fire performance. The data itself has been published as a publicly available database, entitled the Cladding Materials Library (www.claddingmaterialslibrary.com.au). This data can be used to support building fire risk assessments or as the basis for more in-depth research into façade fires. This paper presents the context of the data together with the competency framework necessary for upskilling building professionals to have the capacity to implement the engineering framework

    Geometric phases for generalized squeezed coherent states

    A simple technique is used to obtain a general formula for the Berry phase (and the corresponding Hannay angle) for an arbitrary Hamiltonian with an equally-spaced spectrum and appropriate ladder operators connecting the eigenstates. The formalism is first applied to a general deformation of the oscillator involving both squeezing and displacement. Earlier results are shown to emerge as special cases. The analysis is then extended to multiphoton squeezed coherent states and the corresponding anholonomies deduced.Comment: 15 page

    Early Immunological Effects of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: No Modulation by Ischemic Preconditioning in a Randomised Crossover Trial in Healthy Humans

    Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) has been protective against ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), but the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. We examined whether IPC modulates the early inflammatory response after IRI. Nineteen healthy males participated in a randomised crossover trial with and without IPC before IRI. IPC and IRI were performed by cuff inflation on the forearm. IPC consisted of four cycles of five minutes followed by five minutes of reperfusion. IRI consisted of twenty minutes followed by 15 min of reperfusion. Blood was collected at baseline, 0 min, 85 min and 24 h after IRI. Circulating monocytes, T-cells subsets and dendritic cells together with intracellular activation markers were quantified by flow cytometry. Luminex measured a panel of inflammation-related cytokines in plasma. IRI resulted in dynamic regulations of the measured immune cells and their intracellular activation markers, however IPC did not significantly alter these patterns. Neither IRI nor the IPC protocol significantly affected the levels of inflammatory-related cytokines. In healthy volunteers, it was not possible to detect an effect of the investigated IPC-protocol on early IRI-induced inflammatory responses. This study indicates that protective effects of IPC on IRI is not explained by direct modulation of early inflammatory events

    Study of the B^0 Semileptonic Decay Spectrum at the Upsilon(4S) Resonance

    We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 --> D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set. These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c. From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+ semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950 (+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57 +- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes, tau+/tau0.Comment: 14 page, postscript file also available at http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    On the Degeneracy Inherent in Observational Determination of the Dark Energy Equation of State

    Using a specific model for the expansion rate of the Universe as a function of scale factor, it is demonstrated that the equation of state of the dark energy cannot be determined uniquely from observations at redshifts z≲afewz\lesssim{\rm a few} unless the fraction of the mass density of the Universe in nonrelativistic particles, ΩM\Omega_M, somehow can be found independently.     Cosmological parameters from SDSS and WMAP

    We measure cosmological parameters using the three-dimensional power spectrum P(k) from over 200,000 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in combination with WMAP and other data. Our results are consistent with a ``vanilla'' flat adiabatic Lambda-CDM model without tilt (n=1), running tilt, tensor modes or massive neutrinos. Adding SDSS information more than halves the WMAP-only error bars on some parameters, tightening 1 sigma constraints on the Hubble parameter from h~0.74+0.18-0.07 to h~0.70+0.04-0.03, on the matter density from Omega_m~0.25+/-0.10 to Omega_m~0.30+/-0.04 (1 sigma) and on neutrino masses from <11 eV to <0.6 eV (95%). SDSS helps even more when dropping prior assumptions about curvature, neutrinos, tensor modes and the equation of state. Our results are in substantial agreement with the joint analysis of WMAP and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, which is an impressive consistency check with independent redshift survey data and analysis techniques. In this paper, we place particular emphasis on clarifying the physical origin of the constraints, i.e., what we do and do not know when using different data sets and prior assumptions. For instance, dropping the assumption that space is perfectly flat, the WMAP-only constraint on the measured age of the Universe tightens from t0~16.3+2.3-1.8 Gyr to t0~14.1+1.0-0.9 Gyr by adding SDSS and SN Ia data. Including tensors, running tilt, neutrino mass and equation of state in the list of free parameters, many constraints are still quite weak, but future cosmological measurements from SDSS and other sources should allow these to be substantially tightened.Comment: Minor revisions to match accepted PRD version.
