Praziquantel in clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis
A single stool examination revealed pathogenic intestinal parasites in 462 (58%) of 796 vietnamese and cambodian refugees. 56 (7.0%) were infected with Clonorchis sinensis and/or Opisthorchis viverrini. These patients received Praziquantel in a dosage of 20 mg/kg bwt. p.day on 3 consecutive days. Parasitological controls were completed after 12 months. No further excretion of eggs could be detected in 88% of the patients. Concurrent infections with other trematodes and cestodes were also cured. Nematode infections remained uninfluenced. No change of haematological and biochemical parameters could be observed during therapy. Diarrhea and epigastric pain were common side effects, which are probably not effects of the drug itself. They rather seem to be due to the release of parasitic antigens. This is also indicated by a further increase of circulating Ig E after therapy
Characteristic Potentials for Mesoscopic Rings Threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm Flux
Electro-static potentials for samples with the topology of a ring and
penetrated by an Aharonov-Bohm flux are discussed. The sensitivity of the
electron-density distribution to small variations in the flux generates an
effective electro-static potential which is itself a periodic function of flux.
We investigate a simple model in which the flux sensitive potential leads to a
persistent current which is enhanced compared to that of a loop of
non-interacting electrons. For sample geometries with contacts the sensitivity
of the electro-static potential to flux leads to a flux-induced capacitance.
This capacitance gives the variation in charge due to an increment in flux. The
flux-induced capacitance is contrasted with the electro-chemical capacitance
which gives the variation in charge due to an increment in an electro-chemical
potential. The discussion is formulated in terms of characteristic functions
which give the variation of the electro-static potential in the interior of the
conductor due to an increment in the external control parameters (flux,

Non-Fermi liquid states in the pressurized system: two critical points
In the archetypal strongly correlated electron superconductor CeCuSi
and its Ge-substituted alloys CeCu(SiGe) two quantum
phase transitions -- one magnetic and one of so far unknown origin -- can be
crossed as a function of pressure \cite{Yuan 2003a}. We examine the associated
anomalous normal state by detailed measurements of the low temperature
resistivity () power law exponent . At the lower critical point
(at , ) depends strongly on Ge
concentration and thereby on disorder level, consistent with a
Hlubina-Rice-Rosch scenario of critical scattering off antiferromagnetic
fluctuations. By contrast, is independent of at the upper quantum
phase transition (at , ), suggesting critical
scattering from local or Q=0 modes, in agreement with a density/valence

Influence of Anomalous Dispersion on Optical Characteristics of Quantum Wells
Frequency dependencies of optical characteristics (reflection, transmission
and absorption of light) of a quantum well are investigated in a vicinity of
interband resonant transitions in a case of two closely located excited energy
levels. A wide quantum well in a quantizing magnetic field directed normally to
the quantum-well plane, and monochromatic stimulating light are considered.
Distinctions between refraction coefficients of barriers and quantum well, and
a spatial dispersion of the light wave are taken into account. It is shown that
at large radiative lifetimes of excited states in comparison with nonradiative
lifetimes, the frequency dependence of the light reflection coefficient in the
vicinity of resonant interband transitions is defined basically by a curve,
similar to the curve of the anomalous dispersion of the refraction coefficient.
The contribution of this curve weakens at alignment of radiative and
nonradiative times, it is practically imperceptible at opposite ratio of
lifetimes . It is shown also that the frequency dependencies similar to the
anomalous dispersion do not arise in transmission and absorption coefficients.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Hyperfine, rotational and Zeeman structure of the lowest vibrational levels of the Rb \tripletex state
We present the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the
electronically excited \tripletex state of Rb molecules. The
vibrational energies are measured for deeply bound states from the bottom up to
using laser spectroscopy of ultracold Rb Feshbach molecules. The
spectrum of each vibrational state is dominated by a 47\,GHz splitting into a
\cog and \clg component caused mainly by a strong second order spin-orbit
interaction. Our spectroscopy fully resolves the rotational, hyperfine, and
Zeeman structure of the spectrum. We are able to describe to first order this
structure using a simplified effective Hamiltonian.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 table
Profile alterations of a symmetrical light pulse coming through a quantum well
The theory of a response of a two-energy-level system, irradiated by
symmetrical light pulses, has been developed.(Suchlike electronic system
approximates under the definite conditions a single ideal quantum well (QW) in
a strong magnetic field {\bf H}, directed perpendicularly to the QW's plane, or
in magnetic field absence.) The general formulae for the time-dependence of
non-dimensional reflection {\cal R}(t), absorption {\cal A}(t) and transmission
{\cal T}(t) of a symmetrical light pulse have been obtained. It has been shown
that the singularities of three types exist on the dependencies {\cal R}(t),
{\cal A}(t), {\cal T}(t). The oscillating time dependence of {\cal R}(t), {\cal
A}(t), {\cal T}(t) on the detuning frequency \Delta\omega=\omega_l-\omega_0
takes place. The oscillations are more easily observable when
\Delta\omega\simeq\gamma_l. The positions of the total absorption, reflection
and transparency singularities are examined when the frequency \omega_l is

Magnetic circular dichroism of x-ray absorption spectroscopy at rare-earth L2,3 edges in RE2Fe14B compounds (RE = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu)
Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)
at the L2,3 edges for almost entire series of rare-earth (RE) elements in
RE2Fe14B, is studied experimentally and theoretically. By a quantitative
comparison of the complicated MCD spectral shapes, we find that (i) the 4f-5d
intra-atomic exchange interaction not only induces the spin and orbital
polarization of the 5d states, which is vital for the MCD spectra of the
electric dipole transition from the 2p core states to the empty 5d conduction
band, but also it accompanies a contraction of the radial part of the 5d wave
function depending on its spin and orbital state, which results in the
enhancement of the 2p-5d dipole matrix element, (ii) there are cases where the
spin polarization of the 5d states due to the hybridization with the spin
polarized 3d states of surrounding irons plays important roles, and (iii) the
electric quadrupole transition from the 2p core states to the magnetic vale!
nce 4f states is appreciable at the pre-edge region of the dipole spectrum.
Especially, our results evidence that it is important to include the
enhancement effect of the dipole matrix element in the correct interpretation

New light on the ‘Drummer of Tedworth’: conflicting narratives of witchcraft in Restoration England
This paper presents a definitive text of hitherto little-known early documents concerning ‘The Drummer of Tedworth’, a poltergeist case that occurred in 1662-3 and became famous not least due to its promotion by Joseph Glanvill in his demonological work, Saducismus Triumphatus. On the basis of these and other sources, it is shown how responses to the events at Tedworth evolved from anxious piety on the part of their victim, John Mompesson, to confident apologetic by Glanvill, before they were further affected by the emergence of articulate scepticism about the case
