    Research on object placement method based on trajectory recognition in Metaverse

    Many studies focus on only one aspect while placing objects in virtual reality environment, such as efficiency, accuracy or interactivity. However, striking a balance between these aspects and taking into account multiple indicators is important as it is the key to improving user experience. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient and interactive object placement method for recognizing controller trajectory in virtual reality environment. For creating user-friendly feedback, we visualize the intersection of the ray and the scene by linking the controller motion information and the ray. The trajectory is abstracted as point-clouds for matching, and the corresponding object is instantiated at the center of the trajectory. To verify the interactive performance and user satisfaction with this method, we carry out a study on user experience. The results show that both the efficiency and interaction interest are improved by applying our new method, which provides a good idea for the interactive design of virtual reality layout applications

    Crystal structure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa lipase in the open conformation - The prototype for family I.1 of bacterial lipases

    The x-ray structure of the lipase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 has been determined at 2.54 Angstrom resolution. It is the first structure of a member of homology family I.1 of bacterial lipases. The structure shows a variant of the alpha/beta hydrolase fold, with Ser(82), Asp(229), and His(251) as the catalytic triad residues. Compared with the "canonical" alpha/beta hydrolase fold, the first two P-strands and one alpha-helix (alpha E) are not present. The absence of helix alpha E allows the formation of a stabilizing intramolecular disulfide bridge. The loop containing His251 is stabilized by an octahedrally coordinated calcium ion. On top of the active site a lid subdomain is in an open conformation, making the catalytic cleft accessible from the solvent region. A triacylglycerol analogue is covalently bound to Ser(82) in the active site, demonstrating the position of the oxyanion hole and of the three pockets that accommodate the sn-1, sn-2, and sn-3 fatty acid chains. The inhibited enzyme can be thought to mimic the structure of the tetrahedral intermediate that occurs during the acylation step of the reaction. Analysis of the binding mode of the inhibitor suggests that the size of the acyl pocket and the size and interactions of the sn-2 binding pocket are the predominant determinants of the regio- and enantio-preference of the enzyme

    The importance of sonographic landmarks by transcutaneous laryngeal ultrasonography in post-thyroidectomy vocal cord assessment

    During examination of the vocal cords (VC) using transcutaneous laryngeal ultrasonography (TLUSG), 3 sonographic landmarks (namely, false VC [FC], true VC [TC], and arytenoids [AR]) are often seen. However, it remains unclear which landmark provides a more reliable assessment and whether seeing more landmarks improves the diagnostic accuracy and reliability. METHODS: We evaluated prospectively 245 patients from 2 centers. One assessor from each center performed all TLUSG examinations and their findings were validated by direct laryngoscopy. All 3 sonographic landmarks were routinely visualized whenever possible. The rate of visualization and diagnostic accuracy between the 3 landmarks were compared. RESULTS: Eighteen patients suffered postoperative VC palsy (VCP). Both centers had comparable visualization or assessability rate of ≥ 1 sonographic landmark (94.9 and 95.3%; P = 1.000) and 100% sensitivity on postoperative TLUSG. The rates of FC, TC, and AR visualization were 92.7%, 36.7%, and 89.8%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy and the proportion of true positives, false positives, and true negatives between using 1, 2, landmarks and 3 landmarks were comparable (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Each sonographic landmark had similar reliability and diagnostic accuracy. Identifying all 3 sonographic landmarks was not mandatory and visualizing normal movement in one of the sonographic landmarks would be sufficient to exclude VCP. Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc.     Is BRAFV600E mutation a marker for central nodal metastasis in small papillary thyroid carcinoma?

    Utilizing BRAFV600E mutation as a marker may reduce unnecessary prophylactic central neck dissection (pCND) in clinically nodal negative (cN0) neck for small (≤2 cm) classical papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We aimed to assess whether BRAF is a significant independent predictor of occult central nodal metastasis (CNM) and its contribution to the overall prediction after adjusting for other significant preoperative clinical factors in small PTC. Primary tumor tissue (paraffin-embedded) from 845 patients with small classical cN0 PTC who underwent pCND was tested for BRAF mutation. Clinicopathologic factors were compared between those with and without BRAF. BRAF was evaluated to see if it was an independent factor for CNM. Prediction scores were generated using logistic regression models and their predictability was measured by the area under the ROC curve (AUC). The prevalence of BRAF was 628/845 (74.3%) while the rate of CNM was 285/845 (33.7%). Male sex (odds ratio (OR): 2.68, 95% CI: 1.71–4.20), large tumor size (OR: 2.68, 95% CI: 1.80–4.00), multifocality (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.07–2.09), lymphovascular permeation (OR: 10.40, 95% CI: 5.18–20.88), and BRAF (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.10–2.46) were significant independent predictors of CNM, while coexisting Hashimoto's thyroiditis (OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.40–0.80) was an independent protective factor. The AUC for prediction score based on tumor size and male sex was similar to that of prediction score based on tumor size, male sex, and BRAF status (0.68 vs 0.69, P=0.60). Although BRAF was an independent predictor of CNM, knowing its status did not substantially improve the overall prediction.     The presence of bound states in a nanoscale electronic system attached to two biased, macroscopic electrodes is shown to give rise to persistent, non-decaying, localized current oscillations which can be much larger than the steady part of the current. The amplitude of these oscillations depends on the entire history of the applied potential. The bound-state contribution to the {\em static} density is history-dependent as well.     Fast photodegradation of antibiotics and dyes by anionic surfactant-aided CdS/ZnO nanodispersion

    The photocatalytic technology has broad applications in energy and environmental science. In this study, we synthesized a type II heterojunction CdS/ZnO (CSZ) nanodispersion by means of one-pot precipitation. Different from previous studies, an anionic surfactant was used to improve the photocatalytic activity of CdS/ZnO. The CdS/ZnO nanodispersion showed very good photocatalytic performance in the degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light, with the highest degradation rate of 94.4% when pH = 7, both pH > 7 and pH < 7 were not conducive to TC degradation. Fast and high degradation efficiency was observed for three model compounds, and the degradation efficiency of RhB reached 100%. After 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency remains above 85%. In the photocatalysts, CdS nanoparticles act as photosensitizers, extending the light response of ZnO to the region of visible light, meanwhile, effectively reducing the electron–hole binding rate, which greatly improved the photocatalytic activity.     AbstractNPM1 gene mutation evaluated on a population basis is a valuable and realistic tool to reflect the pathophysiological relevance of cancer. In a comparison of the NPM1 cDNA of human bladder cancer with its consensus sequence, we have found that a higher NPM1 sequence identity in a population is consistent with poor tumor differentiation, advanced tumor stage, and likelihood of recurrence. These data imply that “probability” of NPM1 mutation is an indicator of status of malignancy
